I recently traded an extremely expensive high-end 6-string for this model Ibanez. I'd had long experience with their pencil-neck 4 strings and had loved them. This bass had a more consistent tone than my other 6-string, had a thinner, easier neck, and is almost 5 pounds lighter. I played a gig the night I bought it and was wowed by the purity and clarity of the sound in a real environment. The tone was extremely easy to vary and control. I could get crystal-clear pops, a fat dub sound, and anything I wanted in between. My hands weren't tired at the end of the night, and I made fewer mistakes because of the increase in playing comfort. I wish I'd bought this bass years ago. It's not a pretty instrument, but it's a very, very functional instrument. One warning, though: if you're not comfortable with tight string spacing, this is not the bass for you.

Normally, a Bass in this price range one would expect good to great playability and craftsmanship right off the back. in this case, no. Compared to a similar lower priced GSR206 bass, the GSR206 had a lower action setup with very little buzz. I also have a Ibanez SR405 bass with superb low action. With the mass production of these basses, I figured this SR506 seemed to slip through the cracks. The SR506 could have been factory setup a lot better. The neck had a LOT of relief. Neck bow string height around 3-4mm with strings depressed at 1st and last fret. I'm pretty confident to adjust the dual truss rods--and after 4 days of slight adjustments to give it time to set in, it's now at that point where I may give it 4 stars :). I almost went ahead and got the GSR206. However, the Bartolini Pickups and Active EQ sounded very good as compared to my SR405 loaded with EMG active pickups and active EQ. The SR506's low end appeared muddy, but with active EQ, I was able to dial in my preference of sound. I did mention I may give it 4 stars. However, the craftsmanship that I didnt notice when I was at the store revealed its ugly head. The active EQ toggle switch lock washer was installed backwards. The washer has a angled pin that anchors into the wood to prevent the washer from spinning. This washer anchor pin was facing up. Yes easily fixed, but when trying to remove the back electronics cover plate to fix it, the plate was forced-wedged into its spot, making it very difficult to remove. I had to use a miniature screwdriver to pry off the back plate. Further examination of the plate revealed it was just cut, and its edges were very rough. All my other cover plate edges were sanded smooth - and this too, along with the washer, was easily fixed. Like I said before, this may have slipped through the quality control checks before shipping. Finally, to top off the craftsmanship, the forward strap pin screw could not tighten down. This was fixed using a different strap lock and screw. Do I still like this bass? yes. Very good looking Bass. The neck (after adjustment) is one of the best feeling necks I have played. I love the thinness of Ibanez necks ( I also play a RG570 guitar with a wizard II neck). For a 6-string bass, this is very light. Thats a plus when you're jumping around on stage :)

WOW

By Dave C.

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

As soon as it arrived I was immediately impressed with the beautiful, thin mahogany body. The neck is really fast and easy to get used to if you are moving from a 4 string to a 6 string. The B string is very accessible and surprisingly easy to reach. The EQ allows for any sound that you could possibly want. The Bartolini pickups are amazing. This bass is definitely a good buy for anyone looking to expand their range to get a deeper growl and some more singing highs. I have fallen in love, Ibanez has blown me away once again.

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

i fell in love with this bass first tim playing it. i can get a fatty dub sound, a singing lead sound, and a grinding metal tone without using a pedal or tweaking my EQ anymore just from the controls on the bass. this bass is the best for switching from 4 to 6 strings. not to heavy or to light for a mahogany body and plays amazing. i recommend to anyone that wants to or plays 6 string

Not as hard as it looks.

By Drew

from Wichita,KS

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

Only three things: 1- Feels smooth/good to hold/not to heavy/well balanced. 2-Can make any sound you want with the MK pick ups, and all the knobs on the bass. My cab is fender rumble 100 with 18 speaker, so more sounds can be made at the amp. 3-Seems to be very well made. Looked on Ibanez forum and they have lots of SR posting that help on some info for it. All in all with this bass and my Fender's (59 PBass and 61 jazz fretless) I should be able to get any sound and action i want.

Amazing bass.

By Nick Ornelas

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

Great feel, great sound and a great price. This is the closest to a professional instrument you can buy at this price and it is well worth it. The unfinished neck makes playing so comfortable. If you are a seasoned six string player or just starting buy this bass. Oh, and the Bartonlini pick ups are great too.

Amazing/Beautiful

By Rudy

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

Where do i begin? This bass has it all!! Beautiful highs powerful lows this bass lives up to one of the best in its class. I can almost guarantee that this bass's pickups are as good if not better than the warwick thousand plus ranges. This bass is a must have even if moving from a 4 to a 6 string. The action is amazing as well. You can get every and any sound out of this bass with the 5 EQ knobs. And all this in a lightweight great looking bass guitar with amazing mahogany body!! This bass is a 6 out of 5!

X___X Can you say 'woot'?

By Zechariah

from San Diego, California

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

This bass has amazing tonal range due to the amazing Bartolini MK-1's. The thin neck is something you would expect on basses twice the price of this one. This also makes it a lot easier to make the switch from a 4-string to a 6-string bass, which is what I did. I highly recommend this instrument due to its quality of sound and construction all being bundled in one nicely priced bass.

Fantastic Instrument

By Steve Bradfield

from Salt Lake City, Utah

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

I bought a used 505 and within a month had traded up to a brand-new 506. I like the finish, though it's not exactly flashy. It doesn't seem to weigh any more than the 5-string, and I've worn it for a couple of hours at a time with no pain or strain. The neck is a pleasure to play, but the real standout is the Bartolini Mk-1 pickups and active EQ. A single volume knob with a pickup-balancer is the way to go! The balance knob has a center detente, as do the three tone controls, so finding the middle on a dark stage is quick and easy. The tonal control is amazing, and as others have said you can play almost any sound you can imagine, from extremely bright to extremely deep. I leave my amp tones all set flat and control everything from the bass. The only downside I find is that we have a couple of songs that I play the twenty-fourth fret. I can reach it, but it's not quick and it's not comfortable, so I have to note that complaint. Overall, this is the best bass I've ever played for sound and control, and I don't see why I would need to spend four times as much for a bass that is probably only marginally better.

Pretty good!!

Comments about Ibanez SR506 Soundgear 6-String:

Just like the SR505 it is comfortable, lightweight and has excellent tone. the bartolini pickups give it a great active and passive tone depending which option you choose(it has a switch). Easy to set up and very comfortable to play because of its lightweight and just the overall feel of the instrument. TOTALLY GIG WORTHY!
