This bass plays very nicely. It is easy on the fingers and speedy. Very nice design.
It holds its tune well, and has a responsive sound.

It has good sustain, and a tasteful amount of growl. Since there are active pickups, it has a slightly compressed sound that works great for metal, but its not so squashed that it can't be used for jazz and classic rock.
The built in EQ allows a lot of different sounds, but it does not need dialing in. It sounds great on default.

The finish is very delicate.
It has worn down where my thumb rests while I play finger style, and been scratched up where I play pick style.
The other day, the corner of an empty cardboard box fell onto the bass while it was on the stand, and left a visible mark on it.

I think scratches add character so I'd strongly recommend it if you don't care too much about aesthetics.
I've included a picture. For reference, I've been playing it for 3 years. (a few gigs and a lot of jams per year)

I played this for hours before making a purchase decision at my local GC.

Took it to the studio a few times in the 64 days I had it.

Thought it was the battery when it would not put out any sound other than a faded buzzing. Changed the battery and still no improvement. Changed to four different cords and same deal.

This is the second time that I have had an Ibanez bass go defective in 21 years. The first had similar issues with the output jack and was DESTROYED in shipping and replaced.

I gave this one back and went to a Fender.

Won't buy Ibanez again for bass products.

    Good touring bass

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

I've played this bass for two years. It's powerful, light, and the neck is very fast. The MK-1 EQ offers the very best bass tones. It also looks good. I have had many compliments on this instrument from some of the foremost bass players out there. I record with this bass as well. I would highly recommend it to any bass player seeking a high quality instrument.

    Favorite Bass I've ever owned

    By jared couture

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

After not playing for 15 or so years I got back into playing a year ago. Since then I have gone through about 20 basses. May have a problem. Went through other ibanez, a bunch of fender and squier and sterling to name a few. I settled on fender jazz for a while till one day I was at guitar center bored. I picked up a cheap sra305 and fell in love! Stock elixir strings are awesome and the tone was amazing. Turns out the sra305 was a gateway to an ibanez obsession. Since then I now own an sr 505 and 2 sr 500's The quality that goes into these basses is amazing! The tone is so versatile. I can play faster with this bass than I was able to play on my jazz bass because the action can be set so much lower! This is my holy grail bass! Only problem I noticed on them is the frets sprout a little bit and need to be filed. Looks, weight, playability and tone are amazing! I'm afraid to try the more expensive models because I know I'll have to own at least 1 4 and one 5 string.

    a treasured possession

    By Joseph Knight

    from Oakland, CA

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

I'd been playing for 3 years before deciding to upgrade from my cheap introductory Squire - about 4 years ago. I'm not a "hardware guy" and I hate to shop, so I get uneasy just browsing through GC. Anyway, the SR500 attracted me immediately for its looks. Its light weight and thin neck sold me. With time and experience, I came to appreciate the sound and controls. I feel like I really lucked out finding this bass when I did. It became my sweet baby and favorite material object in the universe. But alas, my plucking style and sometimes forgetting to trim my nails, I soon started digging a crater by the E string. I hated it, but everyone else thought it made a cool battle scar. So I accepted it. But now I've noticed the neck is starting to break up at the top - the joint has shifted so that I'm starting to get splinters on my left thumb! I've put some tape over that spot, but I fear it's just a matter of time before it gives out. That's why I'm here, looking for my next bass! Would I be totally lame if I got the very same model? I'm tempted...

    Great Bass

    By nick wolfenbarger

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

This is just about the best bass you can get for the money. First off, it sounds amazing. It has an extremely wide range of tones and controls. It's also very light. The action is very easy to adjust. As opposed to most guitars and basses, it only has one Allen Screw on each saddle, and they adjust very easily. The action can go quite low on this bass without any buzz, but you can also put it down a bit lower for a perfect popping tone. I play everything from heavy metal to jazz, and this bass covers all the bases. The Active Bartolini pickups have a very nice tone. Beautiful Mahogany body. Very sturdy, and scratches are virtually invisible due to the natural wood finish. Sliding slot to get to the truss rod, so no need to unscrew anything. Overall, this is a great bass and I am very glad I made the purchase.

    Excellent bass

    By Donn Garrison

    from Austin, Texas

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

I had bought this bass two months ago and have not looked back. The tones and sustain this thing generates are unbelievable. I had upgraded from a swamp ash body bass because I used to not be able to play whole notes without the sound fading out quickly. Now with the mahogany body I can hold a note seemingly forever. It has a very nice warm tone to it. I has the same style of neck as most all Ibanez basses but this one is made with wenge and bubinga; very beautiful and great sounding (I got the rosewood fretboard). The body is lightly stained brown leaving the pores of the wood exposed making this one of the most beautiful bass guitars I have ever seen. The pre-amp boost/cut controls are very smooth and easy to dial in a perfect sound for a particular song. They are quiet while dialing at high volumes :) The Bartonlini pickups are very quiet and provide great sound all the way from low lows to soft highs. I have played on many basses in the years, some much more expensive, that sound flat compared to this one. This thing is so great that I am buying a five string model as well. An absolute steal of a bargain for this price indeed.

    Get this bass!

    By Anna...

    from PHX, AZ

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

I'm a person that plays all kinds of music from edgy rock, to 60's happy-go-lucky bubblegum music and this bass has got it all covered! First of all, it's beautiful. Very natural finish and great color. Now to the important stuff! The sound is great if you use the neck pick up with the small button closest to the input turned all the way to the left you get a great round warm sound. If you use the other pick up and turn that little button the other way... INSTANT SLAP! It's super cool, because I've never learned how to play slap bass but I love how it sounds. So you can play slap bass without playing slap bass! lol! It sounds great through an acoustic 450 combo amp. The neck is nice and long, great for The Who (John Entwisle) stuff. Oh and it's really good on the Beatles' song "Something" you can get to all the frets that you need really easily! I would recommend this guitar to anyone!

Worth 3 times what it costs

    By Jeff

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Bass:

Have been playing for 35 years. For the money, NOTHING compares. For 3 times the money, not much compares. The quality of the build is second to no one. Between the pups and the 3 band EQ I can dial any any sound I like and the action and set up are first rate. Best bass I have ever bought and I have bought many.
