This bass plays very nicely. It is easy on the fingers and speedy. Very nice design.
It holds its tune well, and has a responsive sound.

It has good sustain, and a tasteful amount of growl. Since there are active pickups, it has a slightly compressed sound that works great for metal, but its not so squashed that it can't be used for jazz and classic rock.
The built in EQ allows a lot of different sounds, but it does not need dialing in. It sounds great on default.

The finish is very delicate.
It has worn down where my thumb rests while I play finger style, and been scratched up where I play pick style.
The other day, the corner of an empty cardboard box fell onto the bass while it was on the stand, and left a visible mark on it.

I think scratches add character so I'd strongly recommend it if you don't care too much about aesthetics.
I've included a picture. For reference, I've been playing it for 3 years. (a few gigs and a lot of jams per year)

I played this for hours before making a purchase decision at my local GC.

Took it to the studio a few times in the 64 days I had it.

Thought it was the battery when it would not put out any sound other than a faded buzzing. Changed the battery and still no improvement. Changed to four different cords and same deal.

This is the second time that I have had an Ibanez bass go defective in 21 years. The first had similar issues with the output jack and was DESTROYED in shipping and replaced.

I gave this one back and went to a Fender.

Won't buy Ibanez again for bass products.

Not Typical ->

By SurferJoe

from Anza, CA

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I sat in the GC Murrietta for a few hours, trying a bunch of basses. I drove the salesman (Jason) crazy with what I wanted, but he finally steered me the right way. I knew it was time to upgrade from the P-Bass. I played CW and Surf for years, and am old-school, so I don't want or need 'pop-slap' and want a clean yet powerful lower end. The SR500 has 'way more than this - it ranks right there with what I wanted - only better! I never had an active system b4, but this is so much better than anything I've ever played. I also bought an Acoustic B450 amp to go with it and the package is 'small-yield nuclear thunder'. Once I got this into my hands I never put it back on the shelf. This bass plays like a US-made Mosrite - it's so easy with fast finger action and no fret buzz. It makes a player sound like they have many years of experience and ability. After reading the other reviews I'm concerned about the ruggedness of the finish, but if it gets bad I'll just paint it Porsche Red and be done with it. Another good point is that for an old guy like me, this bass won't ruin your back with it's weight. The neck is a little longer that my P-Bass, but the thinness makes it feel smaller and it's obviously faster. Where the Fender is top head heavy, this Ibanez is better balanced, and doesn't make the neck strap slide forward all the time. Great electrics keep the side noises down while you can pump whatever freq range(s) you want without stealing from the other areas. All I think I need now is a good compressor and I can do anything! After years of having to tinker with set-ups for necks and bridges, the fact that the SR500 is so good and sweet right from the Japanese factory is very refreshing. Good work Ibanez and for the foresight of not letting this get made in China. I pulled that plastic cheat-sheet from between the knobs as I find the positions and purposes for them are pretty intuitive and make good sense to anyone who plays an instrument anyway.

I Love This Bass

By Matt

from Denver, CO

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Like many reviewers, I am an intermediate bass player with about 2 years of experience (although I suspect that at 42, I am older than some of the reviewers). I went to GC with the intent of getting a MIM Fender to upgrade from the entry level Yamaha that I had. My band mate and I agreed that this mahogany beauty blew the Fender out of the water in terms of tone, versatility and looks. I let another bass player (who is in a "real" band) check it out and he was floored by how great this bass sounded. I love this bass and look forward to years of playing it until I hand it down to m future 8 year old bassist!

real nice bass

By T-Waste

from Festus, MO

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I left my house sold on getting a Fender P-bass or jazz but I came home with the SR500. It feels better, plays better, and sounds better. You can get down deep and nasty, low and warm, and hit the highs and mids. I really like the finish. I know the mahogany may be hard to care for but I'm easy on my equipment so I think it will be fine. I am trying to find the right strings for it though. Right now I have EB's medium on it. I would recommend this bass to others, from beginners on up. I play a variety of music and this bass sounds good on all.

Best bass I've ever had!!

By Tetsuo

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

Thanks, reviewers!! I just bought this bass 2 days ago and now I am very happy with this. I had 3 basses including a Fender Jazz Bass. But I think this is the best bass I've ever had! This is a good looking light bass and easy to play, plus has very nice sound (clear but not too light). I also highly recommend it.

Good touring bass

By Richard

from Amarillo, Texas

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've played this bass for two years. It's powerful, light, and the neck is very fast. The MK-1 EQ offers the very best bass tones. It also looks good. I have had many compliments on this instrument from some of the foremost bass players out there. I record with this bass as well. I would highly recommend it to any bass player seeking a high quality instrument.

A Total Tone Monster!

By F_Clef Dude

from Allentown, PA

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

If you are looking for a new bass, your search has ended. The Ibanez SR500 is a wonderful blend of visual grace and dominating, pulse-quickening bass. This bass features a very nice pre-amp so you can really concentrate on a "signature" sound. The SR500 is a nice lightweight instrument that offers superb playability. I have played other, more expensive basses and the SR500 meets or exceeds their sound and features at half the price. You really cannot go wrong if you choose an Ibanez.

Found the best bass!

By Bass Duck

from Tacoma, WA

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've been playing my P-Bass for two years, but wanted to move into something that fit my jazz and blues grooves as well as the rock sounds that I love. After two months of trying out dozens of makes and models, I fell in love with the Ibanez SR500 and bought it. It's the best bass! Why? Not only does it look great, it sounds great too. The Bartolini humbucker pickups are the best. And, the active 3-band equalizer allows me to get the perfect sound for Blues (turn down the mid and treb), Jazz (turn the bass up, mid to center, and treb almost to zero), or rock (all three centered). This plays as well as basses three times as expensive. I also added a Behringer BXL3000 amp with 300W for only $300. The combo is terrific! I've played my SR500 it so much the past few days that my fingers are getting sore!

What An Awesome Bass!

By Raj Mangipudi

from Redford, MI

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This bass is truely a work of art! I bought this along with a Markbass 2x10 combo and I can't believe the tone variations possible! The bass booms everywhere on the neck like the original Steinberger polycarbonate bass. The only drawback is the satin chrome bridge and knobs tend to tarnish from the oils on your hand. Ibanez won't warranty the tarnish effect..they say its just like that. I reaplced the hardware with chrome from an older ibanez bass I have and it really stands out under the lights now! This is really a nice bass and not too heavy at all. It's well worth the price minus the tarnish effect.

Great Bass

By nick wolfenbarger

from Knoxville, TN

Comments about Ibanez SR500 Soundgear 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This is just about the best bass you can get for the money. First off, it sounds amazing. It has an extremely wide range of tones and controls. It's also very light. The action is very easy to adjust. As opposed to most guitars and basses, it only has one Allen Screw on each saddle, and they adjust very easily. The action can go quite low on this bass without any buzz, but you can also put it down a bit lower for a perfect popping tone. I play everything from heavy metal to jazz, and this bass covers all the bases. The Active Bartolini pickups have a very nice tone. Beautiful Mahogany body. Very sturdy, and scratches are virtually invisible due to the natural wood finish. Sliding slot to get to the truss rod, so no need to unscrew anything. Overall, this is a great bass and I am very glad I made the purchase.
