Understand, I'm a guitarist, not a bassist. As far as I can tell, this thing is sweet. The Built in EQ and pickup mix make getting the tone your after as simple as can be. Playability is superb. This thing will slap out funk, beat out metal, and play some blues as good as or better than any other bass I've heard. Wonderful feel on the neck and the instrument as a whole is well balanced and fairly light. An absolute joy to play. If you're looking for a great sounding and feeling bass that looks sweet too, don't even hesitate. Get it.

The body and neck are great. The neck pickup has good sound. The bridge pickup is weak and sounds very thin. The EQ and boost do not allow for adjustment of the midrange sounds. This is a great bass for someone that needs a lower priced 5 string bass for customizing. Quality pickups and EQ are needed to make this bass perfect.

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

I have the Dark Brown Charcoal Burst quilted maple finish and I can't say enough how much I love this Bass. Craftsmanship is outstanding. Electronics are very quiet and allow great tone shaping to suit just about any style of music. I also have a Peavey BXP 5AC in Tiger Eye finish that is set up with what I'll call "mellow" strings and I love the way it sounds. I heard the Ibanez and really liked the pickups and string combination for more attack and slap style. The style sweep control is really useful. It weighs about 2/3 as much as the Peavey. Can't go wrong with either one of these. Keeping them both forever ! Just remember to unplug when not in use to save the battery power for the active pickups. Enjoy !

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

I'm transitioning from playing lead guitar to bass. I have a Washburn 4 shortscale, a Fender P-bass 4 and an Epi EB-3 4 string. I wanted a 5 string that was light weight and was a good fit for my hands. The Fender P and J basses in a 5 string were just way too wide near the body joint and the Pedulla's and Alembic's were out of my price range.

The only thing I've had to do is raise the action a bit because I use .50-.130 heavy guage strings and the B was rattling a bit on the frets. After raising the action it plays like a charm. And I can play it all night without having to take any meds for shoulder pains.

I use a SansAmp bass preamp, a Crown XTi-2000 power amp in bridge mode, and an Acoustic 8X10 cab and this little bass rocks the house! Now I might be going after it's big brother, the SR5005 Prestige as my next bass.

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

I've played the mexican Fender Jazz for many years but decided to give Ibanez a try. Boy, was I glad I did. The SR405 is a great instrument. It's easy to play and the EQ gives a variety of different sounds. I would buy this instrument again.

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

Been at this a long time. Older players, like me, often run into hand and shoulder issues. I've been searching for a thin fast neck for some time, always thinking the only way to get comfort would be a shorter scale. This bass maintains the 34" scale, while allowing outstanding comfort, and playability. Highly recommend this instrument for all level of players.

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

I own the four string version of this bass. and had been looking for a five string this Bass fits the bill nice action stays in tune, and sounds great. I love how well its balanced and how light weight it is, very thin body and neck is awesome like all SR basses. I can see this becoming the only axe I use and I have 4 others. I run it through a Carvin RL 600,siezmic 3x10 cab and for that extra punch carvin 118cab very nice bass you wont be disappointed.

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

I own 5 guitars, and this one is easily the best sounding and best playing one. Its a solid guitar for anyone. The guitar came set up and ready to play right off the shelf, just fiddle with the tone to your liking and your set. If your buying a 5 string for the first time, I would advise you to pick this up, she's a beaut!

        Find a used basswood version

        By Michael Casaceli

        from Allentown, PA

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

Prior to 2011, this model had a body that was made with basswood instead of mahogany like it currently is. For those unaware, mahogany is a darker sounding wood compared to basswood, and in some cases that's ok, just not with these pickups. I tried my friend's newer mahogany version, and I'm thankful I bought this 4 years ago in 2008 when it was made with basswood. I love Ibanez, but they need to make more bass guitars that use something brighter than mahogany, like ash, basswood, or alder. Aside from that, this baby is built like a tank and will provide years of reliable gigging. But be prepared to change out to brighter sounding pickups with this newer version, like the Bartolini's off the SR500 and above.

Great bass, best for the price

        By JOSHUA SENIC

        from Greensboro, NC

Comments about Ibanez SR405QM Soundgear 5-String Electric Bass:

The Ibanez SR405QM right around the middle of the Soundgear line. Its not at the bottom of the line, but isn't as appointed as the "top shelf" SR stuff. The 405 isn't loaded with Bartolini's and sweepable mids in the preamp. Even taking all of this into consideration, the SR405QM could EASILY be the "top shelf" bass of any other bass guitar producer. Mahogany body, GORGEOUS quilted maple top on body, 5-piece laminated maple/rosewood neck, rosewood fingerboard, 3-band preamp with USABLE centered frequencies for bass, mid, and treble... I think my favorite feature on this bass has got to be the radiused pickups. Yes, these are the "stock" Ibanez pups; hear me out on this one. First of all, the pups are dead quiet. No 60 cycle hum. These pickups sound good; really good! Because the pickups have a radiused case, the outer case matches the radius of the fingerboard. String action is setup based on the height from the fingerboard, and is therefore radiused. These pickups give very even string to string dynamics, so you don't lose any gain on the A or D string. Very, very cool feature; one that I never thought would be all that important before owning this bass. This bass absolutely rocks, and it is extremely versitile. I play this bass in a country band, but I've played studio sessions with this bass for rock, jazz, blues, R&B, country... The tone just fits. The 3-band preamp is powerful and versitile. String spacing is 16.5 mm at the bridge, which is pretty standard for 5-string basses. I have have big, thick fingers, and the spacing is comfortable for me. The neck feels amazing -- thin, fast, effortless, but strong. The 405 is lightweight, so if you have back problems, this may be a great option for you. It is well balanced when standing or sitting; no diving neck for me.
