Overview

For 25 years the SR has given bass players a modern alternative. Embraced by bassists over the decades, the iconic series continues to excite with its smooth, fast neck, lightweight body and perfectly matched electronics.

The SR305E is a handsome 5-string bass designed for the experienced player. The bass starts with an immaculately finished mahogany body. Other features include a sturdy 5-piece maple/rosewood SR4 neck, a rosewood fretboard, and an Accu-cast B125 bridge for superior string vibration transfer and precise intonation. Cosmo black hardware adds a hint of stealth.

At the heart of the SR305E’s electronics are two PowerSpan Dual Coil pickups. Their stainless pole pieces offer higher output, clarity, and fullness than any in the SR305’s class. Accessed by the 3-way “Power Tap” switch, these proprietary pickups offer a choice of three tonal personalities: A rich humbucker sound, a pure single-coil sound, or an enhanced single coil sound— fattened by lows from the humbucker pickups. Add the ability to dial in precise tone preferences via the Ibanez Custom 3-band EQ, and the SR305E is a musical chameleon. Case sold separately.

Comments about Ibanez SR305E 5-String Bass:

I have really been looking forward to this bass, and was able to pick it up from the store just a few days before I left out of town. When I played it (without plugging it in), the feel was awesome. Then I realized it was tuned a full step low, and once I tuned it to standard tuning, the action completely changed - like the fretboard warped and that awesome action was no longer. Then, I plugged it into my current system, and the sound was distorted, played around and could not get the thing to sound good at all. I then A/B'ed my current bass in the same system, and it sounded fine. I was scratching my head... then needed to fly out on a business trip (which is where I'm at now). I think I'll need to bring it into the store, and see if I'm missing something - hope so. I really liked the look and feel of this bass, just hoping I can get the feel and sound the way I was expecting.

great tone control. really suits my needs playing in a worship team in a good sized church. I have played enough instruments and plenty of other gigs in my life to know the sr305e is an excellent choice.

Comments about Ibanez SR305E 5-String Bass:

This bass is a "Swiss Army Knife"... It is perfect for virtually any application. Deep lows, fat mids, crisp highs..(all of which are easily EQ-ed via the preamp quite nicely), clear and responsive slap and pop, smooth finger plucks, clear picking tone, smooth sounding slide playing, fast neck, great sustain, full 24 fret fretboard... I could go on forever about how good this bass is, but trust me, you won't regret buying this bass. I mainly play this bass through my multi-effects pedal (Digitech GNX4) which sounds great, but it also sounds great straight into my Peavey Basic 40, as well as sounding great through my headphones. I use this bass practicing and recording mainly, but trust me, this bass will be perfect for any situation. Get this bass now!!!

Really nice first bass for me

Comments about Ibanez SR305E 5-String Bass:

Bass looks and feels great to me, but this is my first bass so I cannot say to much regarding it's tone quality relative to other bands or models. I also have not changed the strings on it, yet, but it is a very satisfying instrument so far.

The one star loss for me is in the electronics.

First, while I'm new to bass, I'm not new to filters and amplifiers. The 3-band EQ does not seem to be designed for the frequency range of the bass guitar. Adjusting the Bass Cut/Boost has a somewhat extreme effect on the output, while the Treble Cut/Boost has little if any effect. To me, this suggests that the EQ is a generic module that could also be found on regular guitars and might even be better suited for them. Now, this is basically the entry level model for the SR family basses, as I understand, but I still would have been more impressed if the effect of the EQ had been more evenly distributed between Bass/Mid/Treble.

The second point of slight disappointment is with the Balance control. When the Balance control is adjusted to favor either pickup, some high frequency noise appears. However, since the Treble knob doesn't do much to the sound of the bass overall, the good news is that you can use it to cut the noise without having to worry about completely changing your tone.

So, in summary, I've found two minor flaws, but being able to use the first one to manage the second one is good enough for me. I don't regret my purchase at all, and I think I could still recommend this as a nice bass under $500. (for whatever the word of a novice may be worth)
