It's the pickups!

By Barry

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

I just bought one of these, and it looks awesome and plays great. The all-maple neck is fantastic, and I love the light weight. I agree with the previous reviewer that the E string is weak. So is the G string. After having it set up by a local Ibanez certified tech and respected luthier, we discovered the problem..... It's the contoured pickups! They don't match the radius of the neck, so the top and bottom strings are further from the pickups than the middle two, even when properly set up. There's no way to make all the strings equi-distant from the pickups. It's not even close, and can be seen with the naked eye. I've been trying to touch base with Ibanez tech support, to no avail. I give it four stars because it is 5+ in every area, except the pickup design. It's a good idea that was taken too far. After replacing the pickups this bass will easily be five stars. It's not their quality that's the problem. It's the overly-contoured design that's the problem. I will update this review after talking to Ibanez.

Beats the pants off of its price competition

from Texas

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

Have owned this bass ever since they were first available. It sounds incredible and plays even better. Strong, straight as an arrow neck that is thin and fast. The maple fretboard ads to the tone, looks and feel of the SR300 series. The body is lightweight and the finish is very good quality. Not sure I agree with the volume/tone loss on the E and G strings as listed in previous views - it is very minor. I adjusted the pickups to get more volume out of the E. This subdued the G ever so slightly but it sounds even. Can get Fender P to Jazz tones but tighter and punchier with a lot of growl. I get lots of compliments on the tone. Sounds best with DR Sunbeams.

Best in it's price range!

By Chris

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

My bass broke and money is SUPER tight. In a perfect world I would've been walking out of the store with a SB14 or American Standard Jazz.... I shopped around and played pretty much every bass in this price range and came down to either another P Bass Special or this. This won by a LONG SHOT! The Squire felt just plain shoddy compared to this! This is the entry model in the Soundgear line and it's a SOLID instrument....I had every intention of buying a bass to "hold" me over until I could afford something better, but honestly I'll probably end up keeping this one! Sound great unplugged, feels great, nice thing and light body. I'm really blown away by the build quality, sound and value of this bass. Never played much Ibanez, but I can definitely see myself picking up an SR500 or SR700 down the line. The 3 band EQ is really versatile, a little turn of each of the knobs goes a long way, love the "style sweeper" mid range control. You can seriously dial in a TON of different tones with this baby. Active EQ with passive pickups. Pickups are great, noise isn't an issue through my Acoustic B10 amp. I haven't noticed any difference with the E/G strings sounding weaker due to the contoured pick ups either. The! In my opinion Ibanez has the best bass necks in the industry....super thin, just under 1.50 nut width and SUPER FAST! I'm in the small hands club so this was a match made in heaven, those chunky p necks are just uncomfortable. I wasn't used to having such a low action that Ibanez is known for, but quickly adjusted and can't imagine playing any other way now. I absolutely love the maple fingerboard, I used to play rosewood exclusively, mainly for cosmetic reasons, but there's just something about a nice maple neck! Few small gripes, I noticed a TINY, maybe 1 or 2mm space between my neck and body, small flaw that has in no way affected overall sound, and the D string buzzed halfway down the neck but I few turns on the saddle fixed it right up. And I kind of wish each pick up had a volume control rather than just a balancer. Other than that....perfect! You seriously can't go wrong with this bass for the price! Best in class hands down!

Good for the buck

By James

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

I picked up this bass three months ago and it's a very soild rock bass for fast players and if your just starting out. Pros: Fast playing with alot of tone and also 24 frets with a slim neck. Cons: Low string not for plucking. Dosen't give you any low end compared to a Fender because of the type of wood used and the thing body. Over all the bass feels nice and it's a looker.

Almost a 5 star though

By cyrral

from michigan

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

After playing this bass several times in the store, I found the same issue with the 1st and 4th string lacking the punch of the middle two. Only player bass part-time, otherwise keyboards, I found this issue to not be such an obstacle. With some minor adjustments to the EQ on the bass and on the amp, I've found a comfortable mediun. After that, I'm really enjoying this bass. It replaced an older Ibanez 4 string with this one and I'm loving the maple neck. It plays so easy.

Not bad if you're on a budget

By Anthony

from LA, CA

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

I just started playing and was drawn to this base at the store. If we were just grading looks I've give it 5 stars and it has a great 'feel' to it also. After jamming on it for a little over a month though I just wasn't satisfied with the sound. The 1rst and 4th strings just don't have the 'punch' the two center strings do. I tried every adjustment on the base and amp I could think of to no avail. I decided to return it and guitar center gave me no hassle whatsoever. Their customer service and satisfaction is top notch. The bass gets 3 stars overall, guitar center gets 5.

Comments about Ibanez SR300M Bass Guitar:

My dad bought this for me and I absolutely love this. It's light, with beautiful pickups, knobs, and paint job. The sound is deep, creamy, and perfect. I have the pearl white one. If your looking at this review, just buy the bass! It's worth the money.
