Overview

The RG is the most recognizable and distinctive guitar in the Ibanez line. Three decades of metal have forged this high-performance machine, honing it for both speed and strength.

This RG6005FEQM model has a gorgeous Quilted Maple top over a mahogany body and a Wizard III neck shape that offers maximum comfort and speed. Its fingerboard is rosewood with 24 jumbo frets for bigger note bends. Brushed chrome cover EMG 66 & 57 pickups put out plenty of sonic diversity and power and come with a killswitch for some cool sound strobe effects. A fixed bridge and Cosmo Black hardware complete the list of metal appointments. Case sold separately.

Comments about Ibanez RG6005 Quilted Maple Electric Guitar:

This is an excellent guitar. I also have an RGKP6 and Les Paul Special I. This guitar was worth the higher price paid. It has good hardware, construction, and excellent pickups. It produces sound in line with its price range.

Comments about Ibanez RG6005 Quilted Maple Electric Guitar:

This is clearly a $250 guitar with $200 pickups, being sold for $5-600. While the neck is quite comfortable and the fret edges are nicely finished, it just screams cheap. Cheap plastic nut, poorly resonant body, and cheap, soft metal hardware. Some of the adjustment screws are nearly stripped out after its first setup. IT DOES NOT HAVE A GIBRALTAR STANDARD 2 BRIDGE. This is the same cheap fixed bridge as the Gio and RG421 series. While setting the intonation, the saddle screws dug gouges into the bridge - though that's partially my fault for not completely slackening off the strings first. While the fret buzz is not the worst I've ever experienced, I would expect better from a $600 guitar.

The quilted maple is an exceedingly thin veneer, with no depth or shimmer to it at all. On my trans black finish, you can't even see the quilt at all unless it is in bright direct lighting; the guitar just looks black from a distance. The red finish one they had in the store did look better, but it had a mile-high action and still had more fret buzz than the black.

I bought this guitar mostly to check out the EMG 57/66, which are pretty uncommon in stock guitars. I found that I have mixed feelings about them (note: drop them far away from the strings or they just sound farty). The 66 is a great neck pickup - warm clear and articulate - and it serves this guitar well for soloing. The 57 sounds basically like a slightly less compressed EMG 81, but with a flabbier low end and less cutting highs. For some reason I also found that the 57 doesn't react the same way to OD pedals as my passives or EMG 81 - it just gets boomy and loses definition. Maybe I just need to EQ my amp differently for these pickups, but messing with my amp settings every time I want to change guitars is a pain.

I'm going to tinker with this guitar some more before I decide whether to return it. I'm on the fence right now.

Comments about Ibanez RG6005 Quilted Maple Electric Guitar:

Excellent bargain. Very nice sounding EMG 57/66. Wizard III neck is nice, slightly rounder than previous incarnations, but it is maybe a tick wide for my liking, but I can deal with it. Fret ends are nice and smooth on mine. outstanding guitar for very little cash.
