Overview

The Ibanez RG5EX1 electric guitar's pickups and pickup placement provide the hard-edged cutting tone needed for heavy rock.

Since 1987, many players have selected the Ibanez RG as their weapon of choice for visiting sonic mayhem on the metal masses. With the right choice of pickups and flat, fast necks, the RG crunched its way to classic status.

As heavy as it rocks, the RG5EX1 guitar is made of basswood, a comparatively lightweight wood, which makes it very comfortable for extended playing. With a good balance of highs and lows, basswood is between alder and mahogany in sound character. 24 jumbo frets offer easy playing for leads and chording and the Edge III tremolo bridge lets you dive-bomb all night long while keeping tuning tight.

Total tonal choice is provided 5-way switching of an Ibanez Infinity 4 bridge humbucker with an alnico magnet that is warm sounding with good harmonics, an Infinity 3 neck humbucker with a ceramic magnet producing dynamic sound for rhythm chording, and an Infinity Single3 single-coil with an alnico magnet for traditional sounds with high output.

Right before Christmas, my girlfriend told me that she was buying me a guitar for Christmas, but she wanted me to pick it out, so as not to choose the wrong one. So I went down to my local Guitar Center to pick one out. I walked in the door, proceded to the guitar section, and then everything faded around me until all I could see was what would be my new RG5EX1. It looked like it had been forged by a gun company, the smooth finish, the detailing on the neck. It looked so sharp I thought it would cut me. I immediately took it down, plugged it into the biggest Line 6 Spyder I could find, and began to play. 1/8th of a second later, I knew it was the one. I have had it for six months now, and it still feels like the first time everytime I open its case and play it. Incidentaly, I also got the Line 6 Spyder, and a Digitech GNX4 that day. Beautiful gifts from a beautiful girl. Now to find a wedding ring, ha ha ha...

It looks great but that's where it ends for me. The middle pickup gets in the way because where it's placed is exactly where I pick most of the time. The tremolo bar stays in tune as long as you press down. If you pull up (which is the point of the recess behind the tremelo!) it returns to a sharp pitch. Also, while the dark inlays on the neck match the hardware and the body color, they are hard to see under stage lights in a dark club. I took it back and exchanged it for a practice amp that didn't work when I got it home. I'm having lots of good luck with Guitar Center!

sold on ibanez

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I've recently started playing the guitar about 6 months ago, so I'm pretty new. I started on an 8 year old Fender Strat and can play some basic tunes, chords, and some very easy solos. I went into guitarcenter last night and while I was waiting for friend, I picked up this Ibanez RG5, and let me say, I felt like I was reborn. The songs that I learned on the Strat were so much easier to play on the RG5. I often go into guitarcenter and play guitars "unplugged" because I know I'm not very good. But let me say, for the first time, I plugged that RG5 into an amp and played.........really played. I can't explain it, you just have to play this guitar. It's absolutely amazing. It won't make you a rock star overnight, but I'm definitely heading back soon to buy this guitar, because I really think it will make me a better player, faster.

Wish I Started Off Ibanez...

By Merciless

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I knew after many times listening to some of my favorite deathmetal/metal/grindcore bands that used ibanez I had to give one a try. Nothing beats the quality passive pickups that ibanez presents in their instruments. If considering any mods to this axe sparzel locking tuners & dimarzio activator D's would be sufficient. Also I immediately put some elixir strings 49 gauge & tuned to D standard. This guitar is definately designed for fast riffs & complex metal styles of playing. I own many guitars and have played many guitars... for some reason this axe seems to be better than 90% of those $1,000 (minus) priced guitars.

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

This is an awesome guitar. I saw it when I walked in to GC. It caught my eye from the first time I saw it. Believe me, it looks as good as it sounds. It's easy to move across the neck, so you can play fast, and it delivers an electrifying sound. This is one of the best Ibanez RG series out there.

A must buy! I have played this in guitarcenter, and I completely REGRET not getting this baby! This axe can shred, and it's metallic-like finish is amazing! Chords sound great, and it is very comfortable to play. I also love the fact it can play many genres, from jazz to metal.

My Life Is Complete.

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I was Givin the oppertunity to walk into guitar center with someone elses credit card and choose my next guiatr as a gift after my first live show. lucky me i know. so i walked in right, swaggered over to the guitarish area and even though i had nearly unlimited spending potentail, the only thing that fit my fancy was this guitar. the neck is so fast, so smooth, and topped with a beautiful pearl sharktooth inay. a reverse headstock that shows intense personification of a monster. the pickups, all three of them have the most diabolical collection of high to low gain screams and growls. and to top it all Ibanez saw fit to outfit this beast with an absolute, precision instrumunt called the edge three tremello system. and to this day i have never had a problem with the tuning. i am telling you all that if you want the perfect guitar that does not sacrifice quality for good looks and can satisfy evry corner of the musical world no matter what or how you play, then this "is" the guiatr for you.

Wow amazing guitar for an amazing price

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar last april and all ive got to say is WOW!!! The moment i picked it up and imediatley went to the line six amps and started to play some solo licks and i knew that this was the guitar to buy. Since i got it learning songs was a hell of a lot easier because of the neck which is probably the most comfortable neck out there if you play very fast solo runs like me. The pickups are great i don't see why people complain about them and the tremolo is pretty good i can divebomb a lot and it will never go out of tune i havent had to tune it for over a month now which is pretty amazing. So get this guitar if you love metal or any type of rock.

Impressive

By Kris Rice

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

Amazing guitar/amazing price. I traded in my 2008 Jackson JS1 on this today. Made in 08/2009. It's freaking hot, it screams. With two humbuckers,a single coil, and a five-way toggle, it's very versatile, you can get almost sound you want out of it. The pewter color, shark tooth inlays, and matching Edge III tremolo/locking nut look awesome. It required very little setup. Action was good and it was properly intonated, out of the box, no fret buzz or anything. Looks good. Sounds great! Love it!

still amazing after 2 1/2 years

By ibanez4life<3

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for 2 and a half years. When i first saw this guitar in guitar center i was in love, it fit my style fine for my budget and what i was looking for. I have yet to upgrade from this over the years simply because I don't need to. Some problems have occurred over the years such as the tremolo will get messed up if you aren't used to dealing with locking tremolos. Also, up top where you lock the strings down, the screws will eat out the holes if you tighten them too tight but it is an easy repair that won't cost over 15 dollars. I highly recommend this guitar to any musician in the metal genre on a budget. with a few extra bucks you can throw emgs in this and make it the slyest fox on stage.

As Unique As It is Impressive!

By DJK

from Tunkhannock, PA

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

This guitar I have been using since June 2010 shows almost too much bang for the buck for it has shown massive quality through my playing after 7 months. At first glance I was amazed by its looks and feel - the pearly shark fin inlays and a reversed headstock makes it stand out against all the other Ibanez RGs, the weight isn't like hauling around a Les Paul, and its finish makes it show its power. But the finish is tougher than it looks as well. After playing up to 3 hours a day I have almost no marks or fading on the finish and all you need is a cloth with little drops of water just to rid of the hand prints you might leave by. The tremolo is probably one of the best features of the guitar. I admit I am a whammy bar abuser and I would do a lot of squeals on it, and after having a war with it for around 2 days, the tuning doesn't need much change thanks to the double-locking system. Ibanez impresses me with their INF pickups. The humbuckers eliminate all the buzzing and give quite a punch for hard rock and metal but it is nice on the clean channels. Especially with the neck pickup, sweeps are an instantaneous blast. I replaced the bridge pickup with the DiMarzio D Activator and it made this instrument a lethal weapon by adding a bigger strike and is less muddy (if possible for the INF's high quality) on the clean and less-distorting channels. The fretboard is a little bit wide, but is extremely comfortable and the neck isn't thick, so sweeps and constant shifting in finger positions will make the notes flow. If you use lemon oil when you change strings, the frets will always feel like new for every few months. After switching to this guitar, the jack is very strong and would never get loose on you, which you won't hassle with adjusting it when you plug the cable in. Only one issue is when you need to adjust the trembar, but the only Con on this beautifully made guitar is you will need to push the trembar down to the point where you will see a whole that needs a 2mm Allen wrench. After many adjustments over time with the trembar when it gets loose, it has left a small mark on the finish, but it is very small and does NOT stick out like a sore thumb like most marks do so I'm perfectly fine with it. All in all, this guitar is a true metal axe with so much quality in mind, and I am rather ashamed that Ibanez doesn't have this weapon on its website anymore. For me, purchasing this guitar was a favorite moment to remember.

Excellent Value

By lonasindi

from Indiana

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I've had the RG5EX1 for about a month now, and I like it every bit as much as I did when I got it. The guitar has a thin, fast neck, hot pickups and an excellent finish. The tremelo is solid and stays in tune well. The pickups are versatile and sound good. The single coil is awfully buzzy, though. There can be a lot of noise from the tremelo cavity, especially with the bridge pickup; this is inherent to a floyd rose design, however. The only other complaint I really have is that the fret dressing could be better. The edges are a little rough and can catch your fingers every once in a while.

Incredible Guitar

By NIcoĺs "el chileno"

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

This Guitar is just excellent... The distortion is just perfect for songs of metal bands like Metallica and Bullet for my Valentine, principally and other bands like Iron Maiden, Pantera, Disturbed, Slipknot... It's great for pinch and artificial harmonics and it almost never looses it's tuning. I had to choose between this one and an Epiphone Les Paul Studio and then I didn't know if a made the right dessision, now I'm sure I did... This is a guitar that you con have for a long time without having any trouble... I recommend it a lot if you play heavy music.

Pure Metal

By Spencer Rabourn

from Cassville, Missouri

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

This guitar is built to handle all kinds of abuse for metal players like me. The great thing about this particular instrument is that the harmonics whether natural or not, they are easier to make than most electrics outside the Ibanez brand. I chose Ibanez for my next brand of guitars because of the way they are made to handle even the heaviest of all metal. The pros about the RG, S, and S prestige series are that they often come with a edge or zr tremolo for whammy pulls and no matter how hard you pull the strings stay in tune. For any player, I recommond the Ibanez Brand of Guitars to use for the most extreme conditions of metal.

AMAZING!!!!

By JoeTheMusicGuy

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I went to the store and saw this guitar and fell in love with it instantly. IT IS AMAZING!!!! The only thing i would recommend doing is replacing the pickups (it's not necessary it just enhances the sound more than you can imagine.) I'd put Seymour Duncan Pearly gates in the neck and DiMarzio evolution in the bridge. Like other reviews have said the middle pickup can be a bit of a pain if thats where you pick the most but all u have to do is lower it. I havent tried this yet but if you put the Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rail Stacked Single Coil Pickup in the middle slot that gives you 3 humbuckers!!!! (the pickup i just mentioned is a humbucker but its sized downed to fit a single coil pickup slot [go duncan!]) even without the extra pickups its an amazing guitar!!!!!! do NOT hesitate to buy!!!

Amazing!

By TheGuyWhoPlaysMusic

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I got this guitar probably about a year ago. I was out to buy me a new guitar, and I knew that I liked the Ibanez. I went into guitar center, and saw this guitar, because the one I had originally picked out was bought by someone else, and plugged in and played. I was amazed, I couldn't believe that something this great was something I could afford! Great guitar, other than the fact that after about 25 divebombs on the tremelo, the tremelo-arm slot had bent all up and the bar was falling out when you bent over. Great guitar though, especially after you throw some 11's on there!

Starts good

By Mr0322

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

What goes up, must come down, right? This guitar is the perfect example. It's an amazing piece of work with great sound, a nice feeling neck, and just beauty. Not too heavy either. It's perfect. Then, a few months go by. I've had this guitar since New Years day and I was obsessed with it. Now, I regret buying it. It's Edge 3 tremolo is beyond complicated and doesn't do what it should. Locking system? Doesn't make a difference. Falls out of tune all the time especially when using the tremolo arm. Also, don't try changing the strings because it will not work. If you can get a stronger neck (Mine just broke) and install a Floyd Rose bridge on this, then do yourself the favor and get it. If not, don't bother.

great guitar for the money

By Rocky

from San Francisco, CA

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I recently got this guitar and I am very happy with it for the most part. The wizard neck is still the best playing neck on any guitar in my opinion. I first experienced it way back when I got my RG550 over 16 years ago and have been hooked ever since. The guitar is definitely sexy looking with nice curves, the pewter finish and reverse headstock. The pick-ups are great for stock pick-ups. I have heard they are knock offs of DiMarzio's PAF pros and the tone certainly lends credence to that claim. I have PAF Pros in my RG so it was like stepping into something familiar when I first plugged this in and played it in the store. My only complaints are with the Edge III locking trem. The bar itself no longer has the little plug on the end and seems like it might get really loose over time. Whereas the old edge trem bars popped in, this one just sort of slids in and feels pretty insecure. The other thing about the new Edge III is that muting right at the bridge seems to produce some pitch issues as you pick...I never remember this being a problem with the old Edge trems...though, admittedly, it may just be something I need to get used to. The guitar came pretty well set up from the factory, a few minor adjustments and it plays like fire. For the money, this is a smoking guitar. If you are looking to shred this is money well spent.

Nice Piece of Work

By Ross

from Connecticut

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

I purchased the guitar a few months back and thought it was the easiest guitar I've ever played. The action is easy to adjust as as are most of the settings on it besides tuning. The overall problems with mine are just that the action is too low and my low E sounds like it is under water almost all the time. Also the pickup switch is very close to where you pick, so you will be apt to hit it. Otherwise it's a gorgeous piece of work, before you purchase it though know that there is a huge learning curve for a Floyd Rose system so have them show you how to change the strings if you don't know because the tremolo has to be wedged when you do it.

Review from a Critical Mind :)

By Setsunayaki

from Boston, MA

Comments about Ibanez RG5EX1 Electric Guitar:

This guitar is an amazing value for the money. Reverse-Neck Guitars offer higher stability on the EBG strings which are smaller and help leverage on the guitar... The Bridge and Tremelo-Bar along with the locking system really prevents the guitar from going out of tune each time you use the tremelo bar. My advice to those who buy this guitar who are into Metal and Hard Rock is to Change the pickups. I am one of the rare ones who setup the pickup combination to be fully Metal/Hard Rock.. Went SuperDistortion Neck, Evo Middle + Bridge and It truly has been the most stable and had maintained the highest Performance per dollar ratio out of every guitar that I own. Also, you can't go wrong with 24 frets..Having 2 Octaves accessibility per strong is a must for any serious musician. :) Thanks Ibanez and Guitar Center.
