Good first 7 string

By Jeremy Simpson

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Ibanez RG Series RG7421 7-String Electric Guitar:

Features: The 7421 comes with a fixed bridge, passive Ibanez pickups, and a Wizard II-7 maple neck with 24 jumbo frets. It has nice features for a $400 guitar, and doesn't have many shortcomings. The pickups are a bit too bass-driven for me (I'm into high-mid level prog metal), so that's probably the biggest flaw. Quality & Reliability: The body is made out of basswood, but the sound feels more full, like a mahogany body. I've owned the guitar since 2011 and have played shows and in my home, and it has held up through being thrown, dropped, and whatever else nature's done. It's even stayed in tune most of the time this has happened. It is a very reliable guitar, especially for a beginner 7. Look & Feel: The neck is thicker than usual (it's a 7) but it is still comfortable. It plays well and it is easy to slide where you need to. It is a good weight, and it stays in good condition. Overall: A good starter 7 string, or a good 7 string for the money. Good playability, and a lot of possibilities with some upgrades. I'm giving it 5 stars for a standalone ranking and not in comparison to a higher echelon of guitars.

Good but not great

By Lee Cardwell

Comments about Ibanez RG Series RG7421 7-String Electric Guitar:

As the the title says good but not great. First ting you will notice is that the pickups are trash if you play on a amp with high gain (in my case the line 6 iv spider) the B string drowns everything els out. Also they can't handle palm muting it turns into a static sound. But that being said the neck pickup isn't all that bad it still is able to give clear leads. The cleans are decent but over all is still missing that crisp sound compared to my Jackson with EMG's. So weather or not you are gonna like the stock pickups depends on your tastes your playing style and your equipment. I plan to swap both out with blackouts. If you like to down tune a whole step and play korn or something like that I would suggest look for a 7 string with a little bit better of a bridge especially if you plan to put heavier strings on intonation becomes a problem for this one but it still works the B string is the only string that isn't fully intoned because the saddle won't go back any further but you can't hear any difference. I've tried 3 different sets of strings. First the factory set deaddario's witch were to light for me and didn't allow me to tune a whole step down (no surprise) then I tried a heavier set of deaddario's (10-59) and they were a little better but not great the B string would just flap around in low turnings. Then I got dunlop heavy core 10-60's and they work great very stable especially in low turnings vs the deaddario's witch were all over the place even in standard. The neck for not being very basic wizard 2 with only 3 pcs maple and no binding feels great it's very thin and smooth playing when I took it out of the box it had lots of fret buzz but I wasn't surprised seeing that it first came from Indonesia then Kentucky then to Texas where it's 100% humidity all the freaking time. So a little tinkering fixed most of it I'll get the rest fixed when I get the pickups installed. Over all if your not looking to blow a ton of cash on your first 7 string this is the way to go even though I sound negative it has grown on me a lot I think once you set it up how you like it and get a pickup swap this guitar has real potential.

About Me Experienced

Comments about Ibanez RG Series RG7421 7-String Electric Guitar:

this is my first 7 string guitar and a was about to buy an RGD7421 and test both RGD and RG first i did´t want IRON LABEL because the price and active pickups, the RGD sounds louder but RG PICKUPS sound better and has more pickup combinations the FREETBOARD feels the same, very very nice, but comes poorly adjusted the GIBRALTAR bridge is better on RGD in general is a very very good guitar for the price just buy a better strings and do a good SETUP the RGD sounded buzzy and RG came with a higher strings SETUP than IBANEZ recommended
