Overview

The sound of a driving mandolin solo brings to mind the Appalachians and the bittersweet melodies of generations past. Ibanez offers its flagship M522S acoustic mandolin, an incredibly affordable F-style mandolin that delivers warm, rich sound.

This fancy 8-string bluegrass machine is an ideal instrument for its price, ready to hit up the jams right out of the box. This beautiful F-style Ibanez mandolin starts with a solid spruce top and a flamed maple body for crisp, bold tones from top to bottom. The mahogany neck and the rosewood bridge and fretboard offer lasting tone and sustain, while the gold/pearloid tuners keep the mandolin holding the notes in key. With a high gloss finish, the wood's natural beauty shines through with a shimmering veneer, while the gold hardware stands out in striking fashion.

Though this mandolin is sold under the Ibanez label, it's made in China and drop shipped to various sellers including musician's friend. The mandolin is not the same color as the picture, more yellow and black rather than the brown sunburst as advertised. The slots in the bridge weren't spaced correctly, so I had to take it to a luthier. The strings were rusted and need to be replaced. Although it has a solid top, it sounds tinny and muted. The tailpiece is crooked. I kept it despite it's limits and issues just to practice on, but I wouldn't purchase it again. Hopefully, it will improve in tone when the strings settle in and it gets played on, but we'll see. Absolutely expect to take it to a luthier for a set up. Probably better to buy an all solid wood A model for the same price, ( and not buy "Ibanez" ).

AWESOME!

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

Great for beginners who want the best learning experience possible! I have played guitar for years and decided it was time to pick up a mandolin. This Ibanez has the highest quality sound and build you'll find in the $300 range. I ordered the dark color and it exceeded my expectations and is complemented by everyone who sees it. It has a great feel to it and is very easy to play. For the best string action and minimal opportunity for buzzing i found that locating the bridge just forward of sound hole center was best.

Bad online purchase experience.

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

The finish was rather messy. There was quite a bit of glue residue on the instrument on more than one place. The instrument is well built, but care was not taken to make sure it was clean before packaging. I called Guitar Center in order to find out how I can clean it myself because the nearest store is 2 hours in any direction. Customer service was not helpful. All they wanted to do was sell me another product.

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

Extremely non responsive presumably due to it's not being all solid wood. Poor projection. Nut spacing was incorrect, tailpiece was misaligned, sunburst finish was unattractive going from a stark yellow to black with no gradation.

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I was looking for a '23 Loar for under 3 bills and as fate would have it there were none available...bummer. Instead I opted for this Ibanez and I'm glad I did. Gorgeous right out of the box (I chose the dark violin color and I'm so glad I did!), I had to adjust the bridge and truss rod (that's why they're adjustable) and do some minor set up. However, after that I was off and running. This mando plays and sounds great for under 3 big ones. If you are looking for a starter until you find your '23 Loar, this is a solid choice.

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I've been playing guitar for over 40 years, professionally and semi-pro, and decided to teach myself the mandolin. Started with the Rogue A style- not bad for the price. But onto the Ibanez 522- First, hey it looks good in the photos- but in your hand it looks and feels cheap. The tuners are horrible- they may be the worst tuners I've had on any instrument I've owned since that cheapo Silvertone my folks got me back in the '60s. Truly bad. The intonation- yeah, with the bridge set up- is very poor and inconsistent across the neck. Sound? Sad to say the Rogue holds up pretty well next to the Ibanez.
Here's the bottom line- this is a barely playable mandolin that sells for 3 times what it's worth. It's not a step up and it's not a good beginner mandolin. Did I mention the tuners?
My advice would be to start with the Rogue and if you decide to pursue the mandolin save up for an Eastman or something comparable. But you definitely don't want to throw your money away on the Ibanez 522.

            New to the mandolin

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I am new to the mandolin and aside from a little piano playing a long time ago I'm new to music all together . So I'm no expert but I can tell you my experience so far. I originally bought a Fender FM53S A-style mandolin. I liked it but when I took the pick gaurd off I found a small crack in it. I had bought the protection plan so I went to exchange it. There were no problems with GC they took it right back ( they were great ) but they didn't have one in stock. I would have to wait on a new one or I could look for another mandolin. And I am so glad I found this ibanez. It has a very rich sound that is just a bit better than the Fender. I have quickly fallen in love with this thing and I just can't put her down.

            Best choice!

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I bought this mandolin at Guitar Center during one of their sales a couple months ago. It was the only "F" style one they had. The sunburst finish is beautiful and I especially like the block inlays on the neck, which I consider that an upgrade from dot inlays. After adjusting the neck, intonation, and putting on Elixer strings, it sounded great. Beautiful tone and strong projection. It has a solid spruce top, which is critical to tone. More expensive mandolins have a carved spruce top, but I am not sure that makes any real difference. The tone of this instrument is comparable to high end instruments.

Iconic looks, great tone from Ibanez!

            By James Jones

            from Miami, FL

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I bought this mandolin as a result of my interest in bluegrass music, having played guitar for years. I have an Ibanez acoustic six string which has great tone, so I decided to go again with Ibanez. This was the only F-style my local Guitar Center had in stock, which I prefer over the A-style body shape, since Bill Monroe, the "Father of Bluegrass Music" played an F-style mandolin. This has all the features of more expensive models. I love the block inlays on the neck which some higher end mandolins don't have. After buying it, I replaced the factory strings, which were old, with Elixers, and adjusted the intonation and action. I also got a contact microphone-pickup and a Fender gig bag. It's difficult to put down! People tell me it sounds beautiful and my wife loves hearing me play it.

            An excellent choice!

Comments about Ibanez M522S F-Style Mandolin:

I bought this at Guitar Center in Miami, and am very satisfied. The fit and finish are well done, and the tone of the instrument is excellent, especially after changing the factory strings with Elixers, and adjusting the intonation and action. I also bought a headstock tuner, (Delta Lab) which I recommend, since tuning a mandolin requires precision. That along with a Fender gig bag completed my purchase. I chose Ibanez, because I previously bought an Ibanez acoustic guitar, which has fantastic tone, and, so I thought I should choose this over other models available. This mandolin is also F body style, which was made famous by the iconic Gibson F-5 played by Bill Monroe, and is very pretty as well as having a beautiful tone.

After playing guitar for years, I wanted a mandolin, because of my interest in bluegrass music. I had a six string acoustic Ibanez which has FANTASTIC, so I chose this mandolin, over others. I am very satisfied! It has the iconic F-style body with good fit and finish. The tone, in my opinion, is equivilant to much more expensive makes. I put on Elixer strings and adjusted the intonation and action, and purchased a Fender gig bag. I would recommend a headstock electronic tuner (e.g., Delta Lab) to keep it in perfect tune, which gives it a sweet and beautiful tone.
