I recently purchased the dark violin sunburst Ibanez M-510. It is a beautiful instrument. I absolutely love the finish on it. So as far as looks go it is very very nice. I have been playing guitar for 15 years and I'm learning the mandolin so I purchased this one b/c it was inexpensive. It does not necessarily have the biggest sound, but you have to take into consideration it is a $150 instrument. For the price you pay, it does have a nice sound to it and I would definitely recommend it if you are learning how to play. If nothing else it will make a nice looking addition to my wall of instruments!

This was a 16th Birthday gift for my son, who is a decent guitar/classical guitar player. It arrived in the promised time frame, and the build is decent. The strings that were on it, however, were like it had been sitting in an oceanside shanty for a decade - oxidized and more unpredictable than a billionaire reality star turned politician.

The day after he received it I took it to our local Guitar Center to be restrung because I didn't want to deal with it, adding a $30 or more insult to the injury and to his now memorable-in-a-way-nobody-wants-it-to-be sort of way. By no fault of the tech, its now a week since my son's birthday and that job is getting somewhere close to being started in the queue of work. Hopefully it will be ready soon, shiny new strings, tuned and with the bridge set correctly... I hope it will be playable upon receipt, gotta trust the local tech. Fingers crossed. Aaaah, memories.

If you order one, order at least one new set of strings as well, and give yourself time to change them out...

Awesome Starter Mandolin

By Becky McGoon

Comments about Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin:

This is a great mandolin to start on for two reasons. The first is that its price is very good. The second is that its quality surpasses its price.

Comments about Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin:

this is my first mandolin I have just about every other kind of guitar so I figured I would add to my collection I bought this being it was really cheap and I own quite a few Ibanez electric guitars and love them so I figured i'd give this a try like I said I don't know anything about mandolins but from what I can tell this is a very well made mandolin and has a great sound in my opinion if your looking for something cheap that sounds really good I would definitely recommend this mandolin you cant really go wrong.

Great Inexpensive Lil Mandolin

By Brody Green

from Dalton Georgia

Comments about Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin:

Ive played piano, banjo, bass, guitar, and harmonica for 3 years, and so I wanted to learn something else. Bought this lil mandolin with the vintage sunburst, and man is it beautiful. Started playing it right out of the box, after a lil tuning and work on the bridge. Great for a beginner like me.

"Great Instrument After Fixing"

Pros

  • Good Tone

Cons

  • Bad strings
  • Not Consistent
  • Poor Set Up

Best Uses

Comments about Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin:

First off, this mandolin is a great buy; however, either Guitar Center or the manufacturer needs to check the strings and the intonation for problems before selling them. For example, the strings that came with my mandolin looked like they were thirty years old and one of the high "E" strings broke after only three hours of playing it. Also, the bridge was not set up properly, so the 11th fret was dead on every string. After getting new strings and fixing the bridge, the mandolin sounds wonderful! However, do not expect greatness when you first purchase one for yourself.

I recieved this as a gift from my daughter. The strings that come on it should embarrass Ibanez you will need to replace before playing.the high E broke ting to tune it.they look and feel and sound 30 years old. Put a good set of strings on it and a little tuning the bridge and it play good and sounds nice. It is a good value for beginner to intermediate players.

My violin teacher recommended the mandolin when I hurt my shoulder, and I'm so happy that I can still play music at the nursing home. The sound is fantastic and the switch to mandolin seems so natural for the left hand.

Comments about Ibanez M510 A-Style Mandolin:

If a person is just getting started with the mandilon, the greatest feature that this offers is the fact that the basic construction allows for a really playable set up. It will need new strings as well, so add $40 - $60 for all that and avoid a little sticker shock. This will probably be true for any mandolin purchase (at any price point) so just be aware.
That said, this thing looks great, is well built, and while the output is reserved, it's also enough to let you know how you are coming along.
And, even if it turns out to just be wall dressing, it's still worth the money.
Otherwise, it will not be your last mandolin. Good luck !!

Yep: I am a child as far as mandolin playing goes. Boy! This neck is really small! Sigh....
I got this with the hopes that when I am bored with the guitars., That this will add a little spark.
Ibanez is one of a few companies that still enjoys and produces product with a natural finish. Big selling point. This does sound nice but; I think this is going to be a slow learning process.
