Overview

When Steve Vai teamed up with Ibanez in 1987, little did he realize what a lasting impact his signature model guitar would have. Today, the JEM is an iconic instrument immediately identified with the legendary guitarist. Famous for its distinctive look and innovative design, time has seen this popular, upscale guitar become the most counterfeited model in the world.

In an effort to make the JEM available to a broader fan base, Ibanez has released the JEMJR, providing more affordable access to the magic that is the JEM. Featuring a mahogany body attached to a Wizard III neck, the JEMJR offers many of the JEMs distinguishing characteristics; the H/S/H pickup configuration, the Tree of Life inlay, a double locking tremolo system, and, of course, the famous Monkey grip and Lion's Claw tremolo cavity. Case sold separately.

Another winner from Ibanez. Let me give my major criticism first. The action on this guitar at the store sucked. But when I checked the neck curve it was good. The frets were level AND the fret ends were dressed. The Wizard 3 neck profile is perfect modern technique (shredding). The H-S-H pickup configuration is versatile. The tone and response of the pickups are good. No they are not Dimazio, but they work well in this guitar. The full humbucking positions are not that much louder than the other settings. The vibrato system is smooth and stays in tune. The guitar looks fantastic. The inlay corresponds to regular fret markings. All things considered, this guitar is a fantastic buy at this price. This guitar blows away others that cost twice as much. I gave this guitar 5 stars because of the features at this price.

READ FOR YOUR OWN GOOD: The day I bought this beautiful was on my birthday in late May. I took it home immediately, tuned it, and then started playing it. The pickups on the guitar were extremely bright, and didn't match my tone or style of playing at all. At the time, I figured it was the amp tone I was using. But over time, after trying many different tone setups I realized that The pickups sounded like garbage. Also the guitar would not stay in tune, even with the double locking tremolo and also had fret buzz. I found temporary solutions to these problems but they kept coming back. At the time of writing this, I have had the JEM for a month, and more problems keep developing. For example, the hole where the tremolo arm is placed keeps becoming loose and wobbly, no matter how many times I tighten it. I and most other people would have high expectations for a Steve Vai, or anyother signature edition guitar, and this thing turned out to be trash. I highly recommend not buying this guitar and instead, if you can afford it, buy an EVH Wolfgang Standard. It is a much higher quality instrument, and sounds a lot better. I am definitely returning my JEM ASAP, and hopefully finding a better guitar.

THIS GUITAR ROCKS!!

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

The bridge stays in tune very well. The neck plays great and it just sounds great.. The pickups are a cross between some early 2000's year powersound pickups, a tiny hint of infinitys and a nice crisp flavor of dimarzio.
The quantum pickups play well and have a nice sound.

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

I went to my local guitar center today hoping to buy this cause I'm a Steve Vai enthusiast and thought it would be a great guitar to buy. When I picked it up (even before playing it) I could tell it was a cheap quality guitar. The neck looked and felt like a knock off squire. I decided to plug it into an amp cause I still wanted to believe there was good in it. The pickups sounded beyond awful and the tremelo system didn't even stay in tune when I did a quick whammy bar trick. As I went to put it down I said to myself "For the love of god" in despair. This guitar is dolled up with tree of life inlays and a monkey grip but when you go to play it, it's not what you'd expect at all. Not Steve's fault though.... Still love ya!

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

This product has a great tone, used it with my Van Halen 5150 Distortion petal and was able to go from bluesy Single Coil sounds to soft jazz with no distortion/reverbs and heavy metal. I picked it up in the store and immediately wanted it, super thin neck and solid pickups, I thought it was a steal! Brought it home and it was locked/in tune. Keep in mind, this guitar is brand new. The springs were NOT worn out, the Floating Tremolo by Ibanez just can't keep in tune. I brought it home and had to tighten the springs, a lot actually. They were nearly flush by the time I flattened the tremolo, even with super light gauge strings, though, it wouldn't stay in tune because the bridge would always float up, and each string would be a step down by the time you tune all 6 strings. Yes, even after locking them. 3 hours on my first night and 3 hours the next morning, and still not in tune, I brought it back into the store. The higher model Vai's have a much better trem system, my buddy has one and it's a wonderful guitar. Don't waste your time, or your money.

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

I've made a few guitar purchases from GC over the past few months. All have been smart, inexpensive choices that have not let me down--a Fender Modern Player Tele, a Music Man Sterling Sub AX4, and this marvel.

While the other two are terrific instruments by any standard, and a gas to play, there is something about the JEM Jr. that makes it feel like MY guitar. How I could have made it to almost 50 years old without stumbling on a guitar like this earlier I have no idea.

Firstly, it looks gorgeous. It's not as ostentatious as its more expensive daddy, but the neck inlay is stunning, and the black chrome hardware offers a nice visual contrast to the white paint job, pickups and pickguard.

Secondly, it sounds great. I realize these aren't the DiMarzio pickups that come on the high-end JEM, but they still sound good. I may decide to switch them out for the ones found in the more expensive model, but if I don't, they still do the job nicely.

Thirdly. The body and neck feel like sex......stays in tune, too...

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

Not a bad guitar. I've owned alot of ibanez guitars at this price point and slightly above and this is the first one i've encountered with 4 high frets that are producing some serious buzz. Also see a couple flaws in the paint where it looks like it pooled up. But i guess that's about what'd you'd expect at this price level these days. The old 80's ibanez that I got back in the day at this point never had these issues. Overall though a very nice guitar and a nice alternative to the full on Jem for those that don't want to shell out multiple thousands.

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

I'm a 45 year old beginner. I always wanted to learn how to play. With twin daughters on their way to college and a younger daughter who just got her drivers license, I decided now is the time. After watching thousands of reviews, reading everything I could find about guitar companies, and visiting a handful of stores, I decided that the Ibanez Jem Jr was going to be my choice. I didn't want an entry level guitar because they can be harder to play, and my not sound as good. I couldn't spend thousands either or my wife would kill me. Since getting the guitar a week ago, I've logged double digit hours on it. It is so easy to play and the sound is awesome.
The guitar was shipped with loose nut locks and the tension off of the strings. After tuning, then stretching, tuning then stretching, about 10 times, I've finally got the guitar to stay in tune. Now, I can go completely Vai on the trem system and it stays in tune. I think the only way I could be happier is if I got the full Jem. However, at 1/4 the cost... This guitar is a total Jem!

I own around 30 guitars, mostly American and Japanese with a couple Korean and Indonesian made instruments. I have 3 Japanese Ibanez's that this guitar as far as feel goes, compares favorably. There was fret buzz present in a couple of the higher register frets. I did a basic fret leveling, problem solved. For personal preference I choose to swap out the trem and pickups, but felt both were adequate at this price point.

Comments about Ibanez JEMJR Steve Vai Signature JEM Series Electric Guitar:

I've read a few negative comments here on the Jem Jr. Seems to be written by people who paid 400-500 for this but expected it to be some "miracle" axe that made them play like Vai himself or something. Everyone needs to remember this is basically a RG450 with a few changes. Obviously, the monkey grip and inlays are the only real difference everything else is basically the same. So you pay about 100 bucks more for the monkey grip, tree of life inlay and the lions claw tremolo cavity. That's the only difference here. I've owned the 450dx and I loved it. I saw someone said the neck was "cheap" it's a Wizard 3, just like almost all mid level Ibanez super strats. Also saw some say it felt "Cheap". Not sure why that would be. Considering it's a mahagony body, it has a pickguard and under it,its routered out quite a bit for the electronics, but that's with all IBanez w/ pickguards. Others complained about fret buzz, knobs being stiff to turn etc. Folks.. quit going buying guitars and rushing home thinking you're the guitar is ready for a sold out arena. it's not. You have to get them set up first! It doesn't take much, if you don't know exactly how, pay the guy at the counter a few extra bucks to set it up, you'll be thankful you did. Oh and the quantum pups for me are a more solid set of pups than the infinities. But if you want it to have a great sound and tone, take it to a shop and put in a set of seymours or Dimarzio's not a big deal. This is a solid guitar with Vai's cosmetics and a very affordable price. What more do people want?

Ibanez has done it again. I went to Guitar Center expecting to pick up a $1000 Schecter, but to my surprise I actually like this guitar more. I own another Ibanez with the same Wizard III neck, and I don't think I would go with any other neck. Despite having an Ibanez stock trem, after dive bombing and doing the signature Herman Li move multiple times, I found it to keep tuning stability just fine. The Tree of Life inlays are simply stunning and I am a huge fan of the white finish. In all, this guitar for the price is a steal, and would definitely recommend it.

Just wow. This has got to be one of the best guitars I've ever played for the price. It feels great, looks great, and sounds great. There is just a tiny bit of fret buzz, barely noticeable, but otherwise is perfect. The Quantam pickups are very impressive and I haven't found a sound that I don't love out of this guitar. If you are thinking about buying this guitar, DO IT. You will not be sorry.

100% accurate. I had the same issues and surprisingly, I took his suggestion without even knowing about this review! I had the same idea to return this and get the EVH Wolfgang Standard. Better sound, better feel, better quality. And it always stays in tune!

this is one hell of a guitar for the price. I'm 50 years old and own a lot of high end guitars and this one is right up there with them. I have owned 2 1990,s jem and if I was blindfolded I couldn't tell them apart from this one. playability is unreal the wizard iii neck feels just perfect, the trem is great and pickups wont need changing anytime soon.
