Overview

The Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar is a top-of-the-line 6-string solidbody capable of exploring the most extreme sonic territories at any speed. The 5-piece maple/walnut neck is super-smooth for easy riffing and incredibly strong and stable with a lead-friendly thin and flat profile. A 25-1/2" scale and bolt-on neck joint get you lots of bass and treble response with a quick, precise attack. A 43mm nut provides comfortable string spacing and 24 jumbo frets deliver greater range while the recessed tremolo provides right-hand playing comfort and allows notes to be radically raised as well as lowered. The alder body produces clear, full-bodied vintage tone that serves all your needs from chunky rhythms to searing leads. A trio of screaming DiMarzio Evolution pickups (humbuckers at the neck and bridge with a custom single-coil in the mid position), coupled with Split-5 wiring give you all the tonal diversity you crave. And of course, there's Vai's signature Monkey Grip on the bass-side body wing. Includes case.

Alder body
Best known as the body wood for the classic single coil, bolt on neck guitar, alder produces clear, full bodied vintage tone that works well for lead or rhythm work.

Rosewood fingerboard
Rosewood offers a strong, bright sound and an attractive appearance with a long grain.

DiMarzio Evolution humbuckers
The Evolution neck and bridge humbuckers are the result of 2 years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player and his axe: Steve Vai and his Ibanez JEMs. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have a patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers. The Evolution pickups were originally designed with live gigs in mind, but they have so much presence and definition that they're great recording pickups, too; they slice right through even the densest mix.

Yes it's true, this Jem is expensive. It will damage your wallet. Period. However, once you get past the price tag, you will find a top notch musical instrument. I have owned mine for some time now, and I have been very happy with my purchase. The pick ups in the guitar are excellent, they are Evolutions. The neck is one of the thinnest around, making it easier to shred. The alder body helps the pickups and tonality. This is a good buy. Think of this as an investment. You can pay thousands upon thousands moving in increments, or you can splurge and never worry again.

The guitar looks cool but you can pick up a way better guitar with better specs for less. The neck plays well but the knobs are located in a place where you keep knocking them with your hand if you make a lot of movement. I personally don't see any big advantage with the pickups as compared to other models and in the mid selector position the sound is thin. The vine inlay looks cool but for me it was just too distracting compared to dots or other designs. Besides, you can't play a design or gold, so use your ears and common sense before purchase.

Weapon for Worthy Players

By MildSeven

from CT

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

This beautiful instrument is in essence, little more than a glorified Ibanez RG. The construction and tremolo are the same and are both very good. This JEM separates itself foremost in the neck, where this guitar uses a thicker profile than the wizard necks used in higih-end RG's which some may feel are too thin. The feel is therefore more substantial, and the ebony fingerboard, exquisite inlay, and scalloping of the last several frets are the features that differentiate the JEM from the RG the most. The other main difference is in the electronics, where the DiMarzios give this guitar tonality worthy of its pricetag. I have owned many solidbody 24-fret guitars before and nothing else comes close to this guitar in the variety of tones it can produce. Other obvious differences include the monkey-grip handle in the alder body, flashier pickguard, and gold hardware. If you play mainly in the bedroom or at smaller shows, this guitar may not justify its price as a lower priced RG will offer the same essential features at a lower price. However, if this guitar would see a lot of time in recording, it will really pay for itself in the variety and quality of tones it can produce, as well as the playability of high end Ibanez guitars, if that is what you like.

Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar

By Rontueleum

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

The Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar is great. Just having Steve Vai in the name should tell you that. The sound from this guitar is probably one of the greatest things on earth, but its not cheep. I have played with one a couple time wishing I could get one, but its a goal for the future. The sound is rich and warm, and the with the locking nut, you can go crazy on the wammy bar and still be in tune.

Ibanez JEM7V

By mlogans91

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

I was lucky enough to find one of these guitars in Guitar Center's vintage room and I absolutly loved everything about it. You can achieve almost any sound you want from the two humbuckers and the single coil. The neck is also the fastest I have ever played. The one downside to this guitar is that the pickups tend to show a lot of your mistakes, so you had better be a good player if your playing one of these. So if you love playing leads (and can play them well), and have money to spare, go buy yourself a JEM.

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

This Steve Vai model Ibanez, is my life and soul. I have owned this for 3 Months, and it has acted as if it was brand new out of the factory every day since. I play all styles of musci from his style of rock, to heavy metal, and it hold strong through and through. It is attractive in style, and beautiful in sound, and an overall great model to start a collection, of perform in front of thousands.

Jem 77 B Mirror Top Signature

By MsMaximus

from Boston, MA

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

Don't get me wrong, the guitar is nice. Make sure you play it BEFORE you buy it. This guitar is designed for guitarrists with fingers measuring about 4 inches long. I've owned it for 1 1/2 years. I had to replace the Breed with Evo pick ups for a better and more aggressive sound. I practice for hours everyday and play 2 a week with a band. The guitar has been sent back for repairs 4 times so far. If you are a professional guitar player and intend to use the tremolo, you better be a good guitar tech, have a good luthier or own a back up guitar 'cause you will be sending it back for continuous repairs. Here's the problem: it keeps going out of tune with the low quality tremolo system thus the bridge keeps going up so the guitar needs to be sent back to be reseted to factory specs. (A major drag when you pay this much money...) I've tried everything, visited all jem sites, have all the 3 springs set up parallel to the body, I've checked the knife edge for scruffs etc... Nothing works... Well, I better stop here. My take: this guitar cannot handle frequent use. Don't try to do what Vai does on T.V. otherwise you'll wreck this guitar. It's more of a show off piece than anything else. Make sure you own at least 1 or 2 other guitars before you buy this one. Consider yourself warned.

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

if you want to buy it, buy it but there are better options, if you like a fast neck, light guitar and perfect tremolo system buy the petrucci music man, and the best that the music man is cheaper. thi ibanez have a ULTRA thin fretboard so is really fast but the music man have a faster one because is a little fatter that make it a lot more comfortable. finally this guitar can't handddle the constant use

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

i have one of the original white jems with the ebony fingerboard. i absolutly love it!!!!!!! in fact, i was chosen by mr. vai to go to hollywood to his session, he chose ten out of the nation from our video versions of his songs. he not only signed my jem, he played it for a minute while his tech worked on his trem that locked up on him. guitar center filmed this session and me giving him my jem to play, wow!!! and, he is a really cool guy as well as a killer player. this guitar will NEVER leave my live body. i owe it all to guitar center for giving me the highest point of my life, thus far!!! thank you......marty hough.

Never expected a guitar as good as this!

By Mark Denson

from Richland

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

I have played guitar all my life! LOL! Well, since I was 7 years old so, that adds up to 43 years I have been bending and stretching strings. I have owned Many Les Pauls and Strats and few of these and that but this guitar.... Oh My! This Guitar! I just never expected anything like what my experience has been. Where I live I have always been known as the guys with the cool tones. I have always been asked how I get them? LOL! I don't know! It's my technique. As with all guitarist, it's how we attack the strings and the way we play. With this being said I have never been a fan of high end pickups. When I buy a guitar she stays stock as this one will do so as well. I have in my life seen too many people swap out their stock PU's and add in spendy upgraded Pu's and I always laugh because they still sound horrible! Technique my friends, it's all about technique but, this is where I am going... This Guitar, this sweet mistress comes loaded with DiMarzio Evolution pickups and I have to say, this is the most responsive guitar I have ever played! I can roll my pots down to where they are barely on and they are still tight and crisp! Now let's move on... The neck of this beauty! At first I was a bit amused as the neck to me is wider than other guitars I have played and I wondered if I would adapt to it. OMG! I swear to God! I have become 110% better overnight! The neck is so extremely fast and I adore the scalloped frets from 21 to 24. So, not only is this instrument beautiful, it performs! It plays so nicely! I swear! I am so done with Gibsons and Fenders after this. I have become a true believer in Ibanez quality and workmanship! Hmmm, I think I see an Indonesian Jem in my future! You gotta love that surf green! Last note... Yes, I write and I produce my own original music but sometimes we all have to play covers to pay the bills. I find that this guitar is so very versatile. It's perfect for blues, Jazz, fusion rock, hard rock, metal and even country! This little Gem/Jem Sweet bay, she does it all! Best guitar, finest instrument I have ever owned, I just sold a Gibson Les Paul 54 Re-Issue and this guitar eats that thing for breakfast lunch and dinner and all the snacks in between! BTW! Thanks to the Spokane Guitar Center! You guys are the best! You may be 150 miles away from me but, you from here on out are my mainstay, my personal store! Special thanks to Ami, Mike, and (The guitar Tech, I forgot his name but he's awesome!) And last but not least, Benjamin. Y'all went the extra mile for me and it will not soon be forgotten! Thank you!

Simply amazing........

By Cody

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

This is the greatest guitar i've ever played hands down bar none. The neck is fast and bends are butter smooth. The pickups are scorching hot and scream harmonics with the right amount of distorion and gain. I played this out of a Line 6 Spider III on the Metal setting and tore up a few Vai inspired solos and trust me I just ripped that trem apart in my opinion the Edge trem is better than a Floyd Rose by miles especially with the Lion Claw cavity I was pulling Dimebag squeals to the heavens with this baby.

Addictive

By GRGuitar

from KC, MO

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

This guitar has brought the fun of playing back to me. Every time I put this guitar down, I want to pick it right back up. It is easily the most addictive guitar I have ever played. Also, the fretboard is rosewood, not ebony. The neck is smooth as silk, and is the perfect profile between an RG and a Fender(for example). The last 4 frets being scalloped really allows you to dig into the frets and get those insane bends, as well as forcing you to exert no effort whatsoever when doing those high scale runs. No pickup gets in the way of your picking hand, the locking nuts on the headstock do not interfere with you left hand, and the trem cavity is dug out so you can pick the guitar up by the whammy bar, and it will keep bending. There is no uncomfortable position on this guitar. If you love RGs or the SuperStrat style, this guitar is a Cadillac. Plain and simple. It is worth the price.

for the serious guitarist.

By cbp

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

ive had my jem for about a year now, and i can say its a great guitar. its geared more toward the lead playing then rythem in my opinion. the electronics are great and solid. never let me down.the neck is very comfortable for chording and for shredding. i own a rg as well and there are differences that are obvious when you compare the two side-by-side.better bridge system then standered rg and the neck is way more comfortable. my only complaint is the nut on the head stock. its a softer metal then the standard rg. i know, i stripped it out like a moron. but once it was fixed it was a million bucks again.

Good Guitar but could do with some tweaks

By GF

from Frisco, TX

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

This is a good guitar though I think it is somewhat overpriced and you're paying for the Vai name and connection more than anything else. Pros: The neck is fast and comfortable / The sound is decent and can be tweaked and varied to produce the sound you're after....just about. Cons: I don't think the middle pickup is as balanced as it should be with the neck and bridge pickups. It seems to lack the quality of sound and punch required and actually seems kinda out of place at times compared to its ister pickups. In addition, the input jack is located awkwardly at the base of the guitar which becomes a nuisance each time you have to rest the guitar on a stand. The gold trim is overpowering, cheap looking and too flashy for my taste but they aren't sold in other colors with the same specs.

It feels as though it was made just for my hands. I've had Fenders and Gibsons, etc. but everything felt a little "wrong" to me; that is, until now. Vai fan or not, this guitar is simply incredible. I had heard people complain about the pickups not being versatile enough, but my guess is they just keep everything dimed instead of finessing the knobs. Plays anything from soft jazz to blues all the way to metal without so much as a hiccup. No guitar is every going to be "perfect" but this thing is about as close as it gets! I could go on and on, but I'd rather get back to playing my new JEM!
