Overview

The Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar is a top-of-the-line 6-string solidbody capable of exploring the most extreme sonic territories at any speed. The 5-piece maple/walnut neck is super-smooth for easy riffing and incredibly strong and stable with a lead-friendly thin and flat profile. A 25-1/2" scale and bolt-on neck joint get you lots of bass and treble response with a quick, precise attack. A 43mm nut provides comfortable string spacing and 24 jumbo frets deliver greater range while the recessed tremolo provides right-hand playing comfort and allows notes to be radically raised as well as lowered. The alder body produces clear, full-bodied vintage tone that serves all your needs from chunky rhythms to searing leads. A trio of screaming DiMarzio Evolution pickups (humbuckers at the neck and bridge with a custom single-coil in the mid position), coupled with Split-5 wiring give you all the tonal diversity you crave. And of course, there's Vai's signature Monkey Grip on the bass-side body wing. Includes case.

Alder body
Best known as the body wood for the classic single coil, bolt on neck guitar, alder produces clear, full bodied vintage tone that works well for lead or rhythm work.

Rosewood fingerboard
Rosewood offers a strong, bright sound and an attractive appearance with a long grain.

DiMarzio Evolution humbuckers
The Evolution neck and bridge humbuckers are the result of 2 years of research to come up with the right sound for a very demanding player and his axe: Steve Vai and his Ibanez JEMs. Both pickups are designed for maximum impact and power. The neck pickup is fat, punchy and loud. The bridge pickup is tight, aggressive and louder. Both pickups have a patented dual-resonance configuration to reproduce more harmonic overtones than conventional humbuckers. The Evolution pickups were originally designed with live gigs in mind, but they have so much presence and definition that they're great recording pickups, too; they slice right through even the densest mix.

Yes it's true, this Jem is expensive. It will damage your wallet. Period. However, once you get past the price tag, you will find a top notch musical instrument. I have owned mine for some time now, and I have been very happy with my purchase. The pick ups in the guitar are excellent, they are Evolutions. The neck is one of the thinnest around, making it easier to shred. The alder body helps the pickups and tonality. This is a good buy. Think of this as an investment. You can pay thousands upon thousands moving in increments, or you can splurge and never worry again.

The guitar looks cool but you can pick up a way better guitar with better specs for less. The neck plays well but the knobs are located in a place where you keep knocking them with your hand if you make a lot of movement. I personally don't see any big advantage with the pickups as compared to other models and in the mid selector position the sound is thin. The vine inlay looks cool but for me it was just too distracting compared to dots or other designs. Besides, you can't play a design or gold, so use your ears and common sense before purchase.

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

It feels as though it was made just for my hands. I've had Fenders and Gibsons, etc. but everything felt a little "wrong" to me; that is, until now. Vai fan or not, this guitar is simply incredible. I had heard people complain about the pickups not being versatile enough, but my guess is they just keep everything dimed instead of finessing the knobs. Plays anything from soft jazz to blues all the way to metal without so much as a hiccup. No guitar is every going to be "perfect" but this thing is about as close as it gets! I could go on and on, but I'd rather get back to playing my new JEM!

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

I have been a fan of Steve Vai since I was a child. Although I did mainly listen to merengue, cumbia, and punta, when I wanted to play rock guitar, I would (try ) to play like him. Now, I recently got back into listening to him and I wanted to see if they sold his guitar, and sure enough, they did. Making a HUGE investment, I bought the guitar. As soon as I picked it up, I could tell it was a great buy. The neck is very slim, which allows the guitar to be lighter and for the player to move their fingers more smoothly. Also, the whammy bar is easy to play while you're strumming. Finally, the tone is so fantastic, especially for a large concert hall. I love playing it in a loud concert, or just when I'm jamming with friends. If you're a professional rock musician who wants an all around amazong guitar, this is the guitar for you!

Never expected a guitar as good as this!

        By Mark Denson

        from Richland

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

I have played guitar all my life! LOL! Well, since I was 7 years old so, that adds up to 43 years I have been bending and stretching strings. I have owned Many Les Pauls and Strats and few of these and that but this guitar.... Oh My! This Guitar! I just never expected anything like what my experience has been. Where I live I have always been known as the guys with the cool tones. I have always been asked how I get them? LOL! I don't know! It's my technique. As with all guitarist, it's how we attack the strings and the way we play. With this being said I have never been a fan of high end pickups. When I buy a guitar she stays stock as this one will do so as well. I have in my life seen too many people swap out their stock PU's and add in spendy upgraded Pu's and I always laugh because they still sound horrible! Technique my friends, it's all about technique but, this is where I am going... This Guitar, this sweet mistress comes loaded with DiMarzio Evolution pickups and I have to say, this is the most responsive guitar I have ever played! I can roll my pots down to where they are barely on and they are still tight and crisp! Now let's move on... The neck of this beauty! At first I was a bit amused as the neck to me is wider than other guitars I have played and I wondered if I would adapt to it. OMG! I swear to God! I have become 110% better overnight! The neck is so extremely fast and I adore the scalloped frets from 21 to 24. So, not only is this instrument beautiful, it performs! It plays so nicely! I swear! I am so done with Gibsons and Fenders after this. I have become a true believer in Ibanez quality and workmanship! Hmmm, I think I see an Indonesian Jem in my future! You gotta love that surf green! Last note... Yes, I write and I produce my own original music but sometimes we all have to play covers to pay the bills. I find that this guitar is so very versatile. It's perfect for blues, Jazz, fusion rock, hard rock, metal and even country! This little Gem/Jem Sweet bay, she does it all! Best guitar, finest instrument I have ever owned, I just sold a Gibson Les Paul 54 Re-Issue and this guitar eats that thing for breakfast lunch and dinner and all the snacks in between! BTW! Thanks to the Spokane Guitar Center! You guys are the best! You may be 150 miles away from me but, you from here on out are my mainstay, my personal store! Special thanks to Ami, Mike, and (The guitar Tech, I forgot his name but he's awesome!) And last but not least, Benjamin. Y'all went the extra mile for me and it will not soon be forgotten! Thank you!

I am extremely happy with the JEM7v I purchased.

        By Charles Martin

        from Nashville, TN

Comments about Ibanez JEM7V Steve Vai Signature Electric Guitar:

Other reviewers have covered most of the bases, positive and negative. Good information in the reviews. I bought the one I have several years ago. I did so thinking it had potential. Superficially it's not my kind of guitar. I changed the bridge pickup to suit my tastes. The thing that I wish to add to the reviews is that I am even happier with it now than when I bought it. This may be unique but I have found that it has aged very musically. In just a few years it has developed more "something" that I want to describe as "spank". I haven't noticed that with my PRS's, Gibsons or Fenders or even my Prestige (all great guitars too). So, I guess my point is, it sat around and got BETTER! I don't know if other JEM7v owners have experienced that but that's my experience. Also, it earned position as my number one ax and stayed there. I agree with other reviewers, probably not an entry level guitar. Like another reviewer mentioned (I find it the same here in Nashville, TN), if you are going to pull one of these out of the guitar case in public, you probably want to be able to play it. If I were in the audience, didn't have one and saw one in a players hands my thought would be, "This is either really going to be a treat to hear or I am going to really dislike it." Judging a book by it's cover, I know I do it and it happens. So.....surprise them with a treat!
