I must say that I was a bit shocked when I pulled it out of the box. These are about the size of a guitar - actually the bodies are smaller than most electric guitars. The shock didn't disappeared a when I pluged it in and tuned her up. These things sound big for being so small!

The good:

The fit and finish is really nice, I got one in pearl white and the finish is done very well. The fretwork on mine was spot-on, no fret sprout or sharp fret ends. Also, there were no high spots on any of the frets which I checked thoroughly with a fret rocker. The neck relief and string action height out of the box was pretty good and the nut was cut very, very close to the proper depth as well.

The neck is comfortable in my hand but that is a sujective opinion. The width at the nut is 1.5" and has a sort of shortened modern "A" J Bass style neck profile. The fretboard radius is 14", which means it's fairly flat compared to a Fender style neck, for those who care about such things.

The hardware has a decent plating. The bridge is fairly substantial and not junk as you might think at this price point. The same bridge is used on Ibanez models: GSRM20, GSR200, GSR320 and GSR370.

The tuners are like a smaller version of the Gotoh compact bass tuners. While they aren't anything to write home about, they get the job done with minimal backlash. The gear ratio on them is only about 16:1 as opposed to 20:1 for Gotohs. All of the tuner buttons were adjusted evenly (none lose or tight) and they do hold their tuning well, which is job one, so they'er perfectly acceptable.

The pickups are pretty weak. I measured them both and got a DC resistance of 6.3k ohms for the P-Bass pu and 4.4k ohms for the J-Bass pu. Despite their weakness, they do sound pretty good and you can get some good variance in tone via the two volume and one tone controls.

If you do decide to upgrade the pups, be aware that the J pickup at the bridge is actually the size of a NECK J pickup (due to the 2.25" string spread).

Being as small as this bass is, it should fit quit nicely in most Tele/Strat hard cases (it does in mine). The overall length is 39", the body is 12" wide at the lower bout and the length of the body from strap button to stap button is 19". Looks like the Musician's Gear Deluxe Electric Guitar Case is made to order for it.

The not so good:

Right off the bat, the strings that come on it suck - period. Do your self a favor and buy a set of strings along with the bass. Be sure to get a "short scale" string set, you don't just cut bass strings like guitar strings - they can unravel or break at the post (especially flatwounds). That said, there are a good assortment of short scale 4 string bass sets available from various vendors. The original gauges used are: .045, .065, .085, .105

While the bridge is actually quite good in it's quality, it does have a design flaw that came out while intonating. The saddle adustment screws on the A and E strings will "bottom out" in their travel because the threaded hole doesn't go deep enough into the saddle to allow it to move all the way back. Because of this, the A and E saddles won't move back far enough to get to the intonation point.

What I ended up doing was to remove the screws, run a nut on to them and then use a dremel cut off wheel to shorten them by about 3/16" - 1/4", clean up the cut end with a finger nail file and then remove the nut and reassemble them on the bridge. If you do this while the strings are off, it's actually pretty easy and it cures the design flaw.

For those not so adventurous, they could remove one of the screws and take it to a hardware store and buy 4 size M3-0, 5 pitch metric stainless steel machine screws (Phillips prefered) - two the original length and two 4 or 5 mm shorter.

Over all, I'm glad I bought this little bass, after 45 years of bass playing, arthritis had me thinking I would have to give it up. But this thing has brought the fun back in playing.

A little rough around the edges but overall a great bass. The neck and fretboard were very, very dry feeling until I used mineral oil (baby oil) to give them a better feel. This bass has a true low sound on the neck pick up ( p-bass style split). At a recent jam session, someone recorded us with a one point stereo mic and the bass was so strong that it blew out the recording. Guess I will have to play softer. Love the even shorter short scale of 28.6" Guitar licks and scales transfer over much easier, as I am playing both guitar and bass regularly at the moment.

Comments about Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro Short-Scale Bass Guitar:

I got this to set up as a piccolo bass. The missing fifth star is because the pickup corner was sharp. Fixed with a file when I did the piccolo set up. This thing is just straight fun! Workmanship is outstanding given
The price. I opened the control cavity and was impressed by the care, excess was zip tied and the shielding was very well done. Hard to put it down!

I got this to use as a piccolo bass. Workmanship is excellent and on par with my 10x more expensive Ibbys. Put on some daddario piccolo strings. Reset the intonation and action and I defy you to try and put it down. Sweet little groove machine!

Comments about Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro Short-Scale Bass Guitar:

These little basses are the best kept secret in the bass world. However, they often arrive at the store in poor shape or configuration and need a setup. The pickups are often misaligned, the strings are ALWAYS too low and require a raise (bad buzzing agaisnt frets). I have two of these little basses. I had to send one back to exchange for a new one because a brand new one, right out of the box, had a warped neck.

Comments about Ibanez GSRM20 Mikro Short-Scale Bass Guitar:

I've played guitar for some time and like to compose and record my own music at home. I'm just now learning to play bass and to make it a little more difficult, my fingers aren't long enough for a normal 34in. scale bass, so I really needed a short scale. I've tried some 30in. short scale basses and, although they were okay, the micro's 28in. length was closer to my Les Paul and Strat in scale and felt more playable. For me it was a perfect fit, in both playability and tone. It was also set up well and with a simple tune up it was great right out of the box. The sunburst finish also looks great. The micro is definitely not a toy and it is built to the same professional standards as all Ibanez standard basses. I'm very happy with it and believe I'll enjoy for a long time.

Love this bass! This is not a toy, but a solid bass. The setup came perfect. The frets are smoother than a couple of my expensive guitars. The pots look solid (alpha 500k). The short scale is fun to play! The tuners seem decent and the pickups sound good. I keep looking for things that I might want to upgrade, but honestly can't think of anything; so I will probably just keep it like it is. Even the knobs, which some people complain about look ok to me and they work smooth. For the price and what you get, how can I complain!

This is my first experience with a bass guitar. I know nothing about them. But am very experienced with guitars in general. I bought this for my wife. She is only 5 foot. So short scale made sense. She played bass 17 years ago in high school. She seems happy with it. As for fit and finish. I am shocked at just how good this guitar was. For the price I got It for, I was not expecting much. However. The quality of this guitar is up there with my Taylor Acoustics. Frets are tight into the neck, very clean along the neck, no sharp edges.
I would buy another Ibenez bass any day of the week

plays well right out of the box. The short scale is easy to play and bass sounds great. Playing it through a 100 watt Fender rumble in my studio. It is light so playing it for long sets is no problem. For the short money I paid for this, it was worth the purchase. I think my P Bass is jealous.
