Overview

Its a rare instance when the bass builders at Ibanez re-visit the companys history. But even for the very forward-thinking Ibanez design team, the 40th anniversary of the legendary Black Eagle bass was too important a milestone to ignore. Heres a limited edition re-issue that opens the door to an alternate universe circa 1975.

The first head-turner is the mahogany body with its sharp inward-turned cutaways, along with its gracefully shaped F-hole headstock, which sets the stage for this Black Eagle re-issue to brim with 70s-era cool. Its Maple fretboard boasts an intricate custom inlay, but the decorative pi¨ce de rsistance is most certainly the white-on-black Abolone eagle that lives near the lower horn.

Alnico magnetic Super J pickups imbue the Black Eagle with bright aggressive tonal powers. The Mother-Of-Pearl anointed headstock bears the original, classic Ibanez logo.

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

I'm 62 and still playing. I've had all the basses you can think of including the original version of this bass. This just feels good in my hands, and sounds great. Neck feels like a 64 Jazz. I will use this as my main bass. Looks good too.

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

If you want a very cool jazz bass with a little extra spunk, this is your axe ! Needed a good setup out of the box but a very well made instrument. My only dislike is that the bridge( easily upgraded ) is not that great. Give it a shot and get your jam on !

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

About 15 years ago I spent tireless hours looking for a 70s original black eagle bass, to no avail at the time. Now there are a few places you can get them, but they are incredibly pricey. Needless to say, when I found out that Ibanez had somehow re-released this thing I had to jump on it. It plays great, sounded good amplified, and was everything I had hoped and dreamed it was. If you're looking for a more a comparable alternative to a mid level fender jazz bass I recommend this all day long.

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

I first saw this bass 20+ years ago being played by Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. I wanted one of my own, solely on the grounds that it looked awesome. It wasn't until many years later that I even knew what it was, and as I looked for one, I couldn't find one without a broken headstock that I was willing to pony up the money for. Lucky me, Ibanez reissued this model. I love it. Aesthetics aside, it feels great, plays great, and sounds great. Quality on par with an American made jazz bass.

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

I have an original Black Eagle Bass. All original and in very good shape. I play it through and Peavy Combo 300 watt amp. and I play it through a 1200 watt Ampeg head. I have also used it for studio work.
I have other nice basses, but I always go back to my Black Eagle.
The article reveiw said that the coils are noise and not that good. I don;t know anything about the coil specs, but I do know I have never has a problem with coil buzz. I have also always had good punch with it,

I will order a new one right now. If its as good as the original, I will be extremely happy!

Comments about Ibanez Black Eagle Electric Bass Guitar:

The Ibanez black eagle returns with all the same wonders and/or issues that the original had. This means you get the cool 70's vibe appearance, tone and even the passive hum/buzzing that changes in intensity depending on where you stand, what kind of interference is present, and of course the fun of canceling out the buzzing while touching your strings. If you use nylon tapewound strings then you get to listen to the buzzhum (you know the electric shaver in the background) kind of noise without relief. This can be semi alleviated like most oldschool passive single coil pickups by turning the tone knob all the way down (most do this with tapewounds any how in order to achieve a more upright sound). This bass appears to have more hum/buzzing coming from the neck pickup and regardless of the positioning of the pickup pots it will NOT cancel itself out. I realize that with some work (and copper tape) this issue can be semi resolved but it is worth noting that this is about as "vintage" as it gets.

Pros: If you loved the original, then you will again love the re-issue. Comes with a cord, truss-rod tool etc. Bass played decently out of the box. You have got to give Kudos to Ibanez for bringing back this old lawsuit beauty. They just don't make basses like this anymore (Head stock, graphics, etc)

Cons: Single coil noise. Despite having Jazz single coil pickups, the neck is NOT a jazz neck; it is a chunky "C" shape like a Pbass. The quality of this bass (In some cases better) can be found for a couple hundred less. Re-issue nostalgia is the reason for the price tag not the quality components.

Conclusion: I will be keeping this bass as it represents an era that I miss (think mid-life bass crisis). It will not be my main bass as I find my MIM Fender active Precision bass special (same price roughly) is superior in terms of play-ability and tone. If you have a capable noise gate and/or the technical ability to resolve the noise issues you may be very happy.
