Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist Series AS93L Left Handed Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar:
I was lucky enough to be the recipient of one of these for the holidays. It was backordered and took more than two months to receive it. Upon opening the case, the appearance of the guitar is fantastic. The violin sunburst is really attractive. Playing it, the sound quality was so-so. The Super 58s have a mild, warm sound but the output is perhaps lower than other pickups I've used. When used with pedals such as Boss Blues Driver, it really brought out more of the pickup quality and sounds good. I did not get such good results with Boss Compression, but I think that's on me. The playability of the neck was mixed. The action and intonation from this Chinese-made guitar were good. But there was buzzing all over the neck in different string and fret positions. Two trips to GC did not result in a fix. The hugely overworked techs monkeyed with the truss rod for a moment or two and then said it was ok. It was clearly not and buzzing remained. I took it to a more professional guitar repair shop where the tech showed me the many problems with the frets. $190 is the bill to redo the frets to a playable, non-buzzing state. Factor that into your budget if considering (as you should) this instrument. I did not care for the factory strings - I found them metallic and tinny. Perhaps once the fret issue is addressed, these strings will sound better. The strap button seemed a little too low profile and I had concerns with its reliability. I will replace it with a Dunlap strap lock system. Overall, the guitar looks good, has a very comfortable weight, plays well and sounds good. But like many inexpensive guitars, mine had issues out of the box and needed addressing (which GC could not do) before serious use. I look forward to playing it for a long time and hope these initial issues are not representative of long term quality.
