Overview

Artcore players represent a wide range of musical genres, but the Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar is dedicated to the jazz guitarist. That's probably obvious if you know your old school jazz boxes: wooden bridges, narrow frets. It features a spruce top and flamed maple back & sides for pure Jazz tone. This model has dual Super 58 Custom pickups that deliver a wider range of tones for everything from bebop to smooth jazz and beyond. The 20-fret fretboard produces that authentically warm jazz tone and to top it off: the AFJ95 comes equipped with high-quality flatwound strings.

Case sold separately.

EXCEPTIONAL HOLLOWBODY

Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I was fortunate enough, with the help of MUSICIAN'S FRIEND, to get one of the remaining few production models of the Ibanez AFJ95 in the Antique Flat Fade finish. I haven't seen a single photo yet that does this finish justice. Absolutely beautiful. Why Ibanez decided to discontinue making these in Antique Flat Fade and make them available only in red is a complete mystery to me. It makes no sense.

I have three hollowbody guitars: A blonde Eastman Pagelli, a 1995 Ibanez GB10, the seven-string version of the Ibanez AFJ95, and now this. It was owning the AFJ957 that made me know what to expect out of this guitar before I got it. With an Eastman Pagelli and a GB10 on hand, it could be said that I didn't need this guitar, which may be true. But now that I've played it, I hold this guitar in the same high regard as the other three.

Considerably lighter than the 7-string version, I'd say that this was at first, to me, a surprisingly lightweight guitar. The tone on the AFJ95 is absolutely great, in part I feel because of having a flat finish instead of a gloss finish. The flat finish also makes for an extremely smooth and silky neck feel. Finish work, fretwork, paint, everything on the guitar could not be improved upon.......perfect. Flatwound 11-gauge strings and it was set up perfectly right out of the box.

I don't think anyone makes better affordable mid-priced guitars than Ibanez and this is a perfect example. I honestly don't know how you could do any better at this price. The body style and dimensions (and I would imagine the neck profile as well) on the AFJ95 are pretty much identical to the Japanese-made Ibanez Prestige AF200, which costs about four times as much.

This should be a permanent model in the Ibanez catalog and should always be available in a traditional brown or vintage sunburst finish.

Again, probably the best hollowbody you can buy for this price.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I just got this new jazz box this week so I don't have a lot of experience with it yet, but I know I am going to love it. I tried out many hollow body guitars before settling on this (Epiphone Joe Pass, Joe Pass Pro, Swingster, Casino, and a Gretsch G5420T), but the Ibanez was the smoothest and easiest to play right off the wall with no fiddling. I was all set to get the Epiphone Joe Pass this time when I went to the store (it was my previous favorite of the ones that I had tried previously) but the Ibanez just one me over after careful a/b comparisons. They are almost identical bodies and necks, with a nicer finish on the Joe Pass, but the Ibanez just felt better in my hands, played easier, and sounded better to me; I don't know how much of this was due to the flat wound strings that were on the Ibanez vs. the round wound strings on the Joe Pass. I am used to an Epi ES-339 so the larger size body and neck will take some getting used to but it is already starting to feel familiar. If the Joe Pass had flat wounds it may have been the winner; I think the strings that Epiphone supplies are the wrong strings for that guitar to get the most from it, and it makes for a less than fair comparison

Best value in a hollow body electric

    By David

    from Boise Idaho

Comments about Ibanez Artcore Expressionist AFJ95 Hollowbody Electric Guitar:

I tried several different semi and full hollow body guitars out before I picked this one up. It was love at first sight. I may be just a hobbyist but I have a lot of knowledge about guitars. The quality of the work and materials in this instrument are unmatched in this price range. I know that a lot of people out there will think I am nuts but you would have to move up to a an American made Gibson and spend some serious bread to match this guitar. It plays like butter. The pickups smooth and mellow. Beautiful sounding guitar nice rich mellow sound with good sustain. Great for blues and rock the kind of guitar that calls to you and makes you want to pick it up.
