I purchased this guitar approximately a year ago. I was walking into Guiatr Center to rent some audio equipment and this Guitar happen to catch my attention from the corner of my eye. There is something about this guitar that is undeniable, for the price it plays very well. If you take it to a knowledgable Luthier (guitar repairman) he can make this bad boy sing even better. I switched out the original pickups for the Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and OMG , this guitar completely transformed!!!!! Everyone in the shop wanted to know who's Ibanez it belonged to and where passing my guitar around like a cheap .... (well you know what I mean). This guitar of definitely a diamond in the rough that needs some minor TLC to shine just as bright as its $900 counter parts. Only reason I'm given it a four star rating instead of a five star rating, is because it does need some adjustment right out of the box.

I'm in agreement with most of the positive things I've read regarding this guitar. And will add that there is something very exciting and inspiring about how well it plays. I kind of wish it had a pickguard (purely for cosmetic reasons), but the reason I'm adding my voice to the din is regarding the pups. I haven't spent enough time to say if I'd change them for how they sound, but here's the thing: like many guitarists, I rest my right hand around the bridge. Right away I noticed the odd rubbing sound that results from any interaction between a finger and the ribbon-y thing that wraps around the pick up. Either end or side. If you try to stay away from contacting the pup with your hand you'll wind up holding your hand (or at least I do) in some way that feels unnatural. And likely leave you crampy and grumpy and frustrated. I'm not sure this is a deal-breaker yet, but it is making this more of a sofa guitar than a plug-this-sucker in guitar. I'm just saying.

Much potential

By John Hancock

from Missouri

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

I recently played several Ibanez artcore guitars.... My favorate by far is the AFJ85.... But the AF55 shows some serious potential... apparently people had played with the bridge in the store i tryed it in making it almost unplayable... however I could tell that the neck was straight the tones were good and the bare bones model of the artcore series shows serious potential.... All maple body good pickups... All the other ones i have played since have been almost perfect No useless pick guard / finger rest... and a good look On my guitar I will probably add pickup covers and rewire it for dual shaft knobs as to keep the two knob miminal look But have functonality to blend the pickups as I like.... Overall a very nice entry level guitar to the Artcore series In My opinion the best two guitars are the AFJ85 because of the spruce top & AF55 due to its miminal look

Great Guitar but one reservation

By Craig Hollenbeck

from Largo, FL

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

This is a very good value for the price. Some of my friends who are more experienced than me always want to pick up this guitar and play it when they visit. This guitar has deep mellow tones and can also scream if you want it to. It sounds great, plays great and looks great. Be advised, this gutar is not highly laquired. It has a natural wood finish. My one reservation is that it is always getting out of tune. I will probably have to replace the tuning keys to keep it in tune for any length of time.

Easy to Play!

By David Gorny

from Guntersville, Alabama

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

I would have rated this guitar 5 stars if not for the tuners. To be blunt, the tuners are worse than what I have on my homemade Diddly Bow. The intonation is so far off that I will have to bring it to my local guitar shop for a proper set up and some nice Grover tuners. I hate to spend money for repairs on a brand new guitar but the closest Guitar Center to where I live is a 2 hour drive. Other then the tuners this guitar is a gem. Some may not like the looks, but I love the minimalist appearance. Although it is a little on the heavy side for a hollow body, it is super easy to play. Even though I am not happy with the tuners, I would definitely recommend this guitar to anyone looking for a hollow body

Plan on doing a little bit of work!

    By THOMAS VOORHEIS

    from Raleigh, NC

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

I like the looks of this guitar! Right price and a sound that appeals to me. However, much like many have written, the thing will not stay in tune. Floating bridge and terrible tuners. But,....I installed some quality tuning keys, turned one of the bridge points around, got it intonated, put a spot of glue under the brige. And now,.....mighty nice! Totally a good deal if you can do a little bit of work.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

Out of the box, there is some fret buzz but minor adjustments such as lowering the action (very easy with the floating bridge) and moving the bridge a bit away from the pickups has gotten rid of any sound issues. Also, the hollow body makes it loud enough for home practicing without the need of an amp. This is a beautiful instrument that plays well and has a great feel.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

The look and feel of this guitar are fantastic in this price range. The hardware and pickups are ok but need to be upgraded for tuning stability. I use it to practice without an amp because it has a good sound projection acoustically. I will be replacing the tuners with Grover and will be experimenting with different pickups.
It's great for the price as is but will need a little work for professional level. With a tuner change and fret polish it's great. Changing the pickups and nut and it is excellent.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

I tend to lean towards high end guitars, but this guitar is awesome. While at GC, I happened to pick it up just to look at because the finish seemed interesting. I ran a few jazz chord progressions with it acoustically...the feel and tone of it was incredible. I decided to try it through an amp...I played two progressions with it and at t that point I handed it to the Sales Associate and told him I'm buying it. In 50 years, I have never bought a guitar that quickly.
The finish, set up, action, and intonation were all perfect. Maybe I got lucky, but I'm impressed and that's not an easy task with a guitar for me.

It is an absolute pleasure to play. I find myself not wanting to put it down. I bought it for jazz and blues, but it has a tonal range from creamy jazz to rockabilly.

My only complaint would be that it had pup covers. Other than that, no issues.

For the money, I don't know how you could find a better playing and sounding guitar.

Comments about Ibanez Artcore AF55 Hollow-Body Electric Guitar:

Dad always said "you get what you pay for." This instrument my be the exception that proves the rule. Better than average acoustics, decent electronics, beautiful look and feel, fantastic play-ability, and obvious quality craftsmanship all come together to create a real value for the price. I purchased the AF 55 as a practice acoustic and bridge to going fully electric but find myself becoming enamored with this beautiful arch top. Easy to play like an electric. Play anywhere, anytime "no batteries required" like an acoustic. I've paid a lot more and gotten a lot less for the money.
