Overview

Now left-handers can also enjoy the embodiment of what might be called the Ibanez "modern approach to tradition." Cutting-edge woodworking technology enables the guitar maker’s luthiers to reproduce the sophisticated bracing techniques of one-of-a-kind instruments of yesteryear.

While tradition is obviously the hallmark of the Artwood Series, the company’s decades-long search for the ultimate in acoustic tone has contributed to design alterations that give Artwood a voice all its own.

The dreadnought body shape of the AW54LOPN, and solid mahogany top offers full-bodied, well-rounded bigger-than-expected sonic response. The guitar’s solid mahogany top along with its mahogany back, and sides, breathe freely thanks to a special open pore finish treatment, giving it a full, rich, open sound. A simple, clean, black-and-white multi rosette handsomely appoints an understated flat finished top. Ibanez chrome die-cast tuners ensure smooth, accurate, stable tuning.

Gig bag included.

    • Good all around guitar.

Comments about Ibanez AW54LOPN Left-Handed Mahogany Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar:

It showed up damp and cool from being shipped in a set of cardboard boxes in early winter, thus the minor and typical bulge on the top was exaggerated a bit. After a few days inside, it dried out and warmed up, the top returned to how it should be. Clean, no damage or finish issues.

I should note, this is a large body guitar and the top and its braces are thin. That's what gives the extreme response, superb resonance and pronounced bass. Regarding the latter, I've heard acoustic bass' that didn't sound this good. Even with the E tuned down to D or Db it's still very responsive.

This responsiveness also accentuates the harmonics of the E, A and D strings if they are left open and the G, B and E strings are plucked or strummed. That can be good or bad, depending on what one is doing, but I am very surprised by how well this guitar works.

The wood looks fantastic. I had suspected that it would be much lighter than was shown in the photos of it, but I was wrong, it's nice and dark, very rich looking. Top, sides, back, neck, head, everything on it looks great.

The intonation is very good. I check that by going around the fret board matching notes in the same octave, such as E3 or F4, C4, A4, etc. comparing the pitch that each has when the open tuning is correct. I expected most of them or some of them to be off a good bit, but they are very close.

It came strung with D'Addario coated 80/20 strings, so they are clean and bright.

Complaints: The highs are a bit thin compared to the mid and bass range.

The tuning pegs aren't very good, they're vague and don't feel connected to the strings when you turn them. The nut is tight on most of the strings too, especially the G and B strings. When I change the strings, some graphite in the nut will help there.

The open pore & natural finish make it very reactive to humidity and temperature changes. So, keep it in a stable environment or expect to tune often.
