A new take on an Old Classic

from West Babylon, NY

Comments about Ibanez ASB180 4-String Electric Bass:

The first thing I noticed taking it out of the box was how well made and sturdy the instrument was..I wouldn't be afraid to take it on the road as it was a lot sturdier than I had thought having only my Hoffner to judge hollow bodies by. The second thing I did was have the strings changed not that there was anything wrong with them but I prefer Flat wounds for my style of music.I was not disappointed at all...the tone was everything I expected it to be.

Good bass with different feel and tone

from Greensboro, NC

Comments about Ibanez ASB180 4-String Electric Bass:

I do not own this bass, but I have played this bass on a few different occasions. I've been playing bass for a little over 20 years, and my primary instrument has been a vintage Jazz bass over this period of time. I'm used to that tone and I'm used to the 34" scale. The short scale on this bass feels very much like playing a guitar, especially being used to the longer scale. At first, it feels kind of strange. Once you get used to it, it is very comfortable. The shorter scale also lends itself to more fundamental low end in the overall tone. In other words, thudding and thumping bass tone MONSTER!! :) The tone is different from what I'm used to, but I can think of many different applications where this kind of tone would be most welcome. The pickups are humbucking, so there is no noise from the pickups. The reason that I'm not giving 5 stars is because of the passive tone control. I know that Ibanez is trying to stay accurate to the period in which these basses were popular with the master vol, passive tone, and 3-way switch for pickup selection. I respect that. I guess I'm just so used to my Jazz bass that I feel this bass would be better served with a vol/vol/tone or a vol/blend/tone setup. There is no blending the pickups on this bass as it is stock - it is either neck pickup full on, both pickups full on, or bridge pickup full on. This would be a relatively easy modification for a skilled luthier to make on this bass for you if you so desired a slightly more modern approach to the electronics package. All in all, though, this is a super bass. Once you adjust to the learning curve of the shorter scale and variations in the tonal palette as compared to your J bass or P bass, you'll probably dig this bass as much as I do. Good job overall, Ibanez.

Comments about Ibanez ASB180 4-String Electric Bass:

I perform with several groups playing everything from Jazz, Blues, Rock, Country, & even in a church contemporary service. I have 4 Ibanez bass guitars and the quality & sound on all are great. This has a nice warm sound and plays very easy (all of my bass guitars are shorter scale) but I miss the ability to adjust the volume for both pickups for different styles & songs. The toggle switch is ok but I like to have a little more control of my sound. Depending on what type of music you play it is up to you to decide if this is the right bass for you. On an average I use it on about 1/3 of the songs that I play with my different groups & venues.
