The Artist is back. Anyone who knows their guitar history will tell you: Ibanez spent much of the 1970s in the role of the prodigious student, building copies of the classics that ultimately exceeded the quality of the originals. The Artist was the first original Ibanez design to prove Ibanez was bent on standing shoulder to shoulder with the industry's giants. Like the classics of yesteryear, the AR620s mahogany body features the first-of-its-kind symmetrical double-cutaway for easier access to the higher frets.
Arguably, it is the biggest leap forward Ibanez made 40 years ago that will be most appreciated by todays player: the Tri-Sound switching system, a unique pickup configuration control that pack this axe with a rich tonal palette. No matter what the setting, the 620s Super 80 Flying Finger pickups deliver smooth, warm, vintage sound that make this Artist a must for fans of classic rock tone.

History has painted Ibanez as a company that really hit it stride in the late 70's and early 80's, switching from a business model of making clones of other companies guitars and designing it's own high-end, professional instruments. The Artist, with it's distinctive double-cut, has become the vintage guitar that people seriously speak of in the same sentence as the hey-day of Gibson and the iconic Les Paul. I was prepared to accept the fact that a new version of the Artist, made in China, would be a 'look-a-like' of those old AR models. I was pleasantly astonished to find a guitar that stands up to it's earlier vintage incarnations as just as much guitar as one has come to expect from Ibanez. I spent at least 30 minutes dedicated to going over every inch of the 620BK searching from the sorts of flaws one often finds on Epiphones or Mexican=made Fenders. It appears that Ibanez holds their Chinese factories where the new Artist's are produced to the same QC standards that the company has become known for since the 1970's. Along with the flawless fit and finish, the guitar simply sounds great. It was absolutely a joy to play, out of the box. I don't have any current plans to take it in for a setup. At this point, it doesn't seem to require it. The Super-80's are as I remember them from my old 1970's Artist. Clean and clear through crunched to absolute distortion, there is definition between the strings that I've always found to be missing in Burstbucker's and the rest of the Gibson line of usual pups. If you can find find a guitar for under 1000 dollars, with this level of attention to detail, historical pedigree, and added touches like an ebony fretboard and abalone surfing along the binding, buy it. Or come back and buy an Ibanez Artist when your search for an instrument of this quality causes you to circle around back home here to Ibanez.
