Overview

There's something enticing about the look of an older, vintage guitar well worn with battle scars, earned throughout its years of hard use. Much like a vintage leather jacket or rare antique furnishings, it immediately feels comfortable and sets a tone unlike anything brand new, right off the shelf. It's this idea that inspired the new Ibanez Artcore Vintage Series.

Lurking beneath its aged looking fa┬žade and smoky, low gloss finish is a single cutaway hollowbody that can handle anything from Jazz standards to country and western.

The 30.3" scale neck increases playing comfort, tone and natural low-end resonance while the acoustic body widens the palette of sounds at your disposal with its hollow body construction. Its two Classic Elite Bass pickups offer a wide range of tones with increased tonal warmth. The Sure Grip III Knobs are designed for precise control with non-slip functionality and classic looks. Its Gibrialtar III bridge combined with a Quick Change III tailpiece provides increased sustain and easy string changes.

Comments about Ibanez AGB200 4 String Bass:

The Ibanez Artcore Vintage Bass is good value and a fun bass. It's a continuation of previous years' Artcore basses, but the look is new. The hardware looks like weathered nickel and the body has engineered dings and weathering. You might think it was a 40 year old bass in like new condition, if you didn't know better. Often, this type of roadworn treatment could cost you hundreds of dollars, or more, from a manufacturer's custom shop. Anyway, the previous polished iterations of this bass were very attractive, but the vintage look is outstanding. It doesn't matter how it looks if it can't play the licks, but the AGBV200 doesn't let you down in the sound department. It's two humbucker pickups give you a range of sound from nearly acoustic to almost Jazz Bass. If you're playing blues, jazz or classic rock, you're going to enjoy this bass. It's also a short scale bass, so it's easy on the hands.

What are the negatives? It's not heavy, but it's heavier than I expected. There is a large maple block in the interior, which adds to the durability and probably the resonance of the bass, but it does add some weight to this hollow body instrument. I was hoping that it would be suitable for practicing without an amp, but without power, it isn't much louder than a solid body bass. Fine. I'll just use a headphone amp if I want to keep things quiet. By the way, there is a very similar model, the AFBV200, which has a pick guard and a different type of bridge. I don't know if the depth and weight are the same, or if it's any louder unplugged, but it's another option for you.

If you're a slap happy player, this probably isn't the bass for you. But, if you want a seriously good looking bass that has an excellent vintage sound at a reasonable price, the Artcore Bass should be on your short list.

Comments about Ibanez AGB200 4 String Bass:

Short and sweet...I have 10 basses and this is the one I keep coming back to. Fun to play and looks great. Weight is not an issue, especially when compared to other basses. Sound and tone are excellent. Kudos to Ibanez.

Comments about Ibanez AGB200 4 String Bass:

I am a professional upright bassist that has recently gotten the bug to work on my electric chops. Being that I don't typically work with electric basses, I wasn't aware until after receiving this bass that there are short and long scale necks. I have big hands and this is a short scale neck that just doesn't work. Aside from the beauty of this instrument, it feels like a toy in my hands and would be most suitable for a student. I am not pleased with the tone or the weight of the bass. I suppose that if you are looking for an instrument in the five to six hundred dollar range, you will get what you pay for. I will be looking for a more quality bass and won't be making the same mistake again by ordering something that looks really good online, without playing it first... I wouldn't do that with an upright, so why an electric bass?? Lesson learned.
