Quality Control Issues

By Jason

Comments about Ibanez AEB20E Acoustic-Electric Bass Guitar:

I've only had this bass one day, so this won't be a very thorough review. I'm going to exchange it and hope for better luck. I bought this bass online, or else I would have caught it's issues long before putting my money down. That's the last time I buy an instrument without holding it in my hands. I'm happy with the sound so far, but I've never owned an acoustic bass before, and I've been playing on the brand new factory strings for one day. Until I've spent more time with it's soon to be replacement, I can't say "I'm blown away." It's solid, and I'm satisfied. I'm only speaking to the unamplified, acoustic sound, I haven't played it plugged it. I bought it to play unplugged in my apartment, and it sounds fine for that. The good: It's a nice looking bass, the finish is clean, it feels solid. It plays well, except for the issues below. The tuners feel nice, and the tuning has been stable. The bad: The truss rod needed an adjustment when I got it, it was a bit tight. The A D and G strings are fine after the adjustment. The built in tuner is very slow to respond, and a bit finicky. The frets stick out a bit past the binding, which is uncomfortable when sliding your hand up and down the neck. The inexcusable: The slot in the nut for the E string was cut way too low. When looking from the side, the E string sits noticeably lower than the other strings, and nothing thicker than two sheets of paper will fit between the string and the first fret. Annoying, horrible, no good, very bad string buzz on the open E. Nope, no thank you, it's going back.
