October 2011: I am 65 years old, and a very picky musical instrument buyer, and very picky what sound I want to get out of my guitar and amp. So, I researched a lot by reading reviews.
In October, I bought a Gretsch G-5120 hollow body archtop guitar. I then bought Monster Jazz cables to filter out static, and help give warm tones. And, I then bought the Ibanez Wholetone amp. Put it all together, I got a very clean warm tones at "any" volume level.
As you may know, most amps will start to get muddy (distortion) when your volume goes over "3" setting. Not, this amp! However, it really does not seem to be a full 80 watts full volume. I have a small Fender 25 watt amp that is louder and not even turned up all the way. So, it is a good volume for small rooms, but you may need to Mic it for larger rooms. As stated, the tone in my setup is awesome, and I do love this amp. However, here are some things you may need to know, so you are not disappointed: (1) Yes, totally clean volume when volume totally turned all the way up, (2) It has a Gain knob, but there is "NO" distortion, per the Gain knob seems to "only" increase the volume, (3) There are "NO" numbers (0-10)for any of the control knobs, so you need to guess where you are setting each knob, (4) There is a very small on/off switch on the backside, which for me is annoying, per a solid-state should have a switch along side the control knobs, (5) It is larger than it appears in the photos, (6) is an a awkward looking large square box. (7) The square box makes it clumsy to carry and feels a lot heavier, (8) There is a headphone jack - if you want to blow your ear drums out, (9) The Chorus is pitifully poor, and (10) The reverb is great.
I have been asked, if I could put effects pedals from my guitar cable to pedal to amp? Yes you can just like any amp. But, I do not know, if the sound would be great, per this amp is designed for the warm "Clean Jazz" sound. I also have been asked, if other types of guitars (such as solid body) would sound as good with this amp as a hollow body guitar? Yes, but each guitar has its own sound. So, test this amp out with whatever guitar you like, before you buy it
For what I want, this amp is great. I love the warm clean tones. I do not care that it is not extremely loud; per I only play at home. I do not want a lot of effects modeling (waste of money for me), per I will never use them, and I hate constantly tweaking knobs from effects sound to effects sound, etc. For me, it is just too much work and boring waste of playing time. I can live with the little negative things I listed above, such as the switch on the backside and no numbers on the knobs. And, I do not like Chorus at all, or any distortion.
Therefore, it is not a generic amp for everyone?s taste. Yup, it may not be what you are seeking. So, ask yourself what are you seeking? And, if it is a clean warm Jazz sound amp, then test drive it (so to speak).
I hope this helped you. If so, click on YES below
I've been interested in Jazz guitar for a couple years now (been playing guitar over 30 years) and one thing I was always looking for was a used Fender Jazz King or Jazz Ultralight which were both discontinued. I know that Ibanez isn't really known for their amps, but I have two Artcore guitars, an AF and an AS and they are both excellent. So I figured I'd give it a try.
I am very pleased overall with the sound of this amp, and it's portability. It's nice to just have a clean one-channel amp with minimal effects so I feel that I am not paying for features I will never use. The amp/spkr/cab design seems very well tailored for clean jazz tones and doesn't pretend to be every kind of amp ever invented.
I gave the amp four stars instead of five b/c of one thing I noticed- at higher volumes, if you turn up the chorus effect, you get what I would deem very heavy compression along with it. I haven't used compression previously so maybe it's not "heavy" but only "moderate", but I've never had a chorus pedal add any compression at all that I noticed.
Other than that one minor issue, this amp is a steal for less than half the price of other dedicated Jazz guitar amps like the Henricksen or the JazzKat. And it weighs a lot less than the Roland JC120.
I've been looking for an amp that is strictly for jazz (affordable mind you). This gives a jazz sound/tone like the other guys. At first I said it was going to sound poor but I was wrong. It made my jazz guitars sing warm tones the way a jazz amp should. The only flaw is that the control knobs don't have like other amps #'s. I always wanted an amp w/o distortion or overdrive like most amps. The amp means what it says 80w of pwr and at high volumes it stays clean and warm.
