A versatile, affordable rocker's weapon.

The Ibanez RG5EX1 electric guitar's pickups and pickup placement provide the hard-edged cutting tone needed for heavy rock.

Since 1987, many players have selected the Ibanez RG as their weapon of choice for visiting sonic mayhem on the metal masses. With the right choice of pickups and flat, fast necks, the RG crunched its way to classic status.

As heavy as it rocks, the RG5EX1 guitar is made of basswood, a comparatively lightweight wood, which makes it very comfortable for extended playing. With a good balance of highs and lows, basswood is between alder and mahogany in sound character. 24 jumbo frets offer easy playing for leads and chording and the Edge III tremolo bridge lets you dive-bomb all night long while keeping tuning tight.

Total tonal choice is provided 5-way switching of an Ibanez Infinity 4 bridge humbucker with an alnico magnet that is warm sounding with good harmonics, an Infinity 3 neck humbucker with a ceramic magnet producing dynamic sound for rhythm chording, and an Infinity Single3 single-coil with an alnico magnet for traditional sounds with high output.

  • Wow amazing guitar for an amazing price

As reviewed by metallica7 on 9/26/2009

I got this guitar last april and all ive got to say is WOW!!! The moment i picked it up and imediatley went to the line six amps and started to play some solo licks and i knew that this was the guitar to buy. Since i got it learning songs was a hell of a lot easier because of the neck which is probably the most comfortable neck out there if you play very fast solo runs like me. The pickups are great i don't see why people complain about them and the tremolo is pretty good i can divebomb a lot and it will never go out of tune i havent had to tune it for over a month now which is pretty amazing. So get this guitar if you love metal or any type of rock.

  • As Unique As It is Impressive!

As reviewed by DJK on 1/30/2011

This guitar I have been using since June 2010 shows almost too much bang for the buck for it has shown massive quality through my playing after 7 months. At first glance I was amazed by its looks and feel - the pearly shark fin inlays and a reversed headstock makes it stand out against all the other Ibanez RGs, the weight isn't like hauling around a Les Paul, and its finish makes it show its power. But the finish is tougher than it looks as well. After playing up to 3 hours a day I have almost no marks or fading on the finish and all you need is a cloth with little drops of water just to rid of the hand prints you might leave by. The tremolo is probably one of the best features of the guitar. I admit I am a whammy bar abuser and I would do a lot of squeals on it, and after having a war with it for around 2 days, the tuning doesn't need much change thanks to the double-locking system. Ibanez impresses me with their INF pickups. The humbuckers eliminate all the buzzing and give quite a punch for hard rock and metal but it is nice on the clean channels. Especially with the neck pickup, sweeps are an instantaneous blast. I replaced the bridge pickup with the DiMarzio D Activator and it made this instrument a lethal weapon by adding a bigger strike and is less muddy (if possible for the INF's high quality) on the clean and less-distorting channels. The fretboard is a little bit wide, but is extremely comfortable and the neck isn't thick, so sweeps and constant shifting in finger positions will make the notes flow. If you use lemon oil when you change strings, the frets will always feel like new for every few months. After switching to this guitar, the jack is very strong and would never get loose on you, which you won't hassle with adjusting it when you plug the cable in. Only one issue is when you need to adjust the trembar, but the only Con on this beautifully made guitar is you will need to push the trembar down to the point where you will see a whole that needs a 2mm Allen wrench. After many adjustments over time with the trembar when it gets loose, it has left a small mark on the finish, but it is very small and does NOT stick out like a sore thumb like most marks do so I'm perfectly fine with it. All in all, this guitar is a true metal axe with so much quality in mind, and I am rather ashamed that Ibanez doesn't have this weapon on its website anymore. For me, purchasing this guitar was a favorite moment to remember.
