  • Great guitar... period!

As reviewed by Chris on 9/21/2009

I bought my AS73 last year and have previously owned electric guitars in a variety of strat configurations. I was tired of the strat type guitar and wanted to try something new, so in my shopping around I looked at Epi Les Pauls and SGs, PRSs and Schecters, and Fender teles. These were all ok but I was looking for great. Then a Gretch 5122 caught my eye. The Gretch had a great sound - I loved that Bigsby! - but didn't feel quite right for me, so I decided to widen my search to include semi hollowbodys like the Ibanezx and the Gretch and the Epi Dot, and of them only the Ibanez AS73 sounded great AND felt great. A year after purchase I can say I'm not impressed with the tuners and the set up wasn't great - I had to adjust both pups to get them sounding optimal, but the guitar sound great, whether thru a modeling, a solid state or a tube amp. The action is awesome and its lightweight and very comfortable. It play dirty oh so well, and for a dual humbucker config, it plays clean quite nicely also! If I was to make only ONE change it would either be to put a better set of tuners on it, or somehow figure out how to put a Bigsby tremolo on it. Neither of these changes are critical. I think if someone is looking for a new guitar, these reviews are a good start but in the end you should really go to the store and experience each guitar one at a time (if possible thru the same amp on the same settings) to see if it feels and sounds right for you. For me, the Ibanez AS73 was a perfect match for sound, feel, and price.

  • Thanks, Michael

Just bought my second AS73. First one was a Brown Sunburst and the second was a Trans Red Cherry-discontinued color, I think. It's a deep shade of cherry, that highlights the wood-grain. Scale and neck radius is perfect for my small hands. Open chords, barre chords, or lead-it all works great. The quality of craftsmanship is impeccable. No problems with the electronics, or the hardware. I replaced the machine heads on the sunburst with Kluson cream-colored keystones. Just a cosmetic fix. Nothing wrong with the stock tuners. For this price, it's a great buy.

  • Great Guitar for the Money

As reviewed by Cody on 6/1/2010

I recently picked up one of these Artcore's used. I am very impressed with how well put together this guitar is. The neck is very playable and fast. The body has a perfect weight and balance. The only thing I would change on this guitar would be the pickups, not that the stock ones are all that bad. Overall, it's a great guitar for the price.
