  • For the cost, a very, very nice guitar

As reviewed by Morgan on 3/12/2011

I bought one of these from my local GC yesterday and have played it nearly non-stop. For the money, this is a surprisingly nice guitar. Is it going to beat out an authentic Gibson Les Paul or Paul Reed Smith? No. But this has pretty decent quality going for it. Playing through a Peavey 3120 & 4x12: The mahogany body & set-in neck provide a nice warm tone. The tuners aren't bad - no slippage or going out of tune - and the nut is set very well for the neck even for alternate tunings (Drop D, etc) with no strings buzzing against the frets. It's got great sustain and the action on the neck is very friendly. The metallic silver sunburst is very easy on the eyes. The bridge is very easy to palm-mute heavy rythms. But more than anything else, I was really impressed with the stock pick-ups. They're not Seymour Duncans, but they can go from a nice edgey, crunch to glassy, warm cleans like a Duncan. Plus, they are very quiet - no background noise, hiss or hum. Eventually I will upgrade the tuners & pickups, but until then this was definately $400 well spent.

  • Best singlecut/LP style under $400 hands down

As reviewed by Brian R on 1/27/2011

This guitar is a full-blown Epiphone killer. Anybody looking at an Epi Les Paul Custom silverburst would do themselves a favor and try this goregous guitar. Save yourself $300 because this guitar is far superior. The neck is chunky yet comfortable, the body is nicely contoured and surprisingly light. The action on my guitar needed to be raised a bit and I set it up with Dunlop .010s in standard tuning and thanks to the Gibraltar bridge and solid tuning machines, she stays in tune very well through a whole practice or show. The Gibraltar is one of my fave features of the guitar as it makes palm muted riffing very comfortable. I love the quick change tailpiece as it saves so much time for string changes. I love the finish and get compliments on it all the time. The depth of the silverburst is so much nicer than the flat looking Epi. I'm also really impressed with the stock electronics. The 3-way switch is super solid, the pots are quiet and smooth, and the stock pickups are pretty good. I'll eventually put a set of Duncans in it, but it sounds smokin' hot through my 6505+. I'd compare it the PRS SE line in tone and feel, except I like it a bit better. Overall, this guitar is a steal for intermediate players and with a few mods and a good setup, you've got a gorgeous pro axe under $600. I'm thinking about purchasing another ART model. Bravo Ibanez.
