I travel a LOT, so tossing iRig in my guitar case makes it easy to practice when I'm on the road. I'm so impressed with the tone and gear, this is an outstanding investment that outperformed my pocket POD! Usually I listen on headphones and it's nice, but hook up a pair of monitors or a nice stereo and WOW! My favorite feature is definitely being able to load in and jam along with .mp3s - makes it super easy to learn songs! Tuner and metronome are great, too, making it a perfect little practice tool.

That's it - the title statement wraps it up. I really like it, even though it has some hiss/noise and the included noise filter muffles the sound a bit. That said - it is a relatively versatile little tool with tuner and metronome, storable presets, and you can import songs to jam along. The quality of the effects / amps is good, my personal favorites are the "crunch" and "clean" amps. The emulation of sound and controls is really well done. This gadget is great for traveling e.g. with a traveler guitar, or to practice at home with earphones. The size makes it ideal for travel! Your iPhone is your amp :-) $40 for a three-way bus is a little overpriced, but it's fun, and handy. Extra effects can be purchased online for $2.99 or 4.99 for amps. If this is acceptable or not - depends on your budget. Future features I would like to see: -Tempo adjustment of imported songs without changing pitch (for practicing) - Looping of the same (to practice phrases). - Stereo for some effects (delay, chorus?) - Less hiss/noise - a few drum beats to complement the metronome

iRig

By Dave D.

from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I orderd direct and recieved a few days ago. When GC gets these in stock, get one! Woth it!! Great for practicing especially while everyone is sleeping. I wasnt absolutely blown away by it but, whatever your style is you can get some great sounds from the software which is available to download. As all players know, true tone comes from your fingers. There are awsome players who can make a 35 dollar pawn shop guitar and an old solid state amp scream. There are others have two thousand dollar guitars and two thousand dollar amps that totally sound like... well you know. With that said. If you understand the aim of this product you will be totally pleased. Definately worth purchasing. iRig Rocks

Turn "No Feedback" Off!

By Steve

from mississauga, ontario

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

The Amplitube IRig is wonderful for traveling with my Steinberger Spirit guitar, and IPad conected to a Tivoli Pal Radio. The People who can't get any level out of the IRig need to go to "Settings" in the Amplitube App, turn "No Feedback" to off and there will be plenty of gain.

With new version of app, AWESOME!

By Michael Hill

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I bought the iRig when the Amplitube app first came out but since the release of the latest update to v2, this thing has found a new home in my practice setup. Easy to use metronome and tuner and a function to play along with songs. The hardware is basic, no frills. Its a touch noisy on some high gain settings, but more than useable and playable. Its a full in/out device, just plugin, connect guitar and headphones, you are ready to play/record. Wih the new update, input and output level control is offered, which helps tons on my Fender Strat. I have the full app version with all the amps and stomps offerings and I must say, the guitar tones are surprisingly good for coming from my phone! :) If you travel, want an easy practice/record setup, or need a spare rig for that emergency situation when the bottle of whiskey gets spilled on your amp, you cant go wrong!

Cheap

By Roger

from Scottsdale, Az

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I've been using Cakewalk since the late 80's, and I didn't expect much from an iOS app, but I figured the stomp modeling was worth a try and hey, they're cheap anyway. After a few weeks I do have regrets. I bought 2 units, one for an iTouch and one for an iPad. Here are some results: Pros :) It's cheap; the stomp modeling is not bad. Very portable for practicing. Cons :( Software keeps crashing both on my iPad and iTouch, play along converts MP3's to waves and wastes space, Recorder version is very primitive and lacks very basic features. I get bleed in from regional corporate air tower 4 miles away when iRig is plugged in. Worst of all the support is nonexistent. Almost no documentation, no kb, and the support techs don't seem to understand the unit, they miss-quote operations and are arrogant, condescending and abusive. In general support is an absolute ZERO. When you buy this, you are totally on your own. Would I by again? No Would I recommend this to a friend? No The concept is great but IK is a poorly run organization.

IRIG DOES NOT WORK

By WinchesterGuy

from Detroit MI

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I have spent the last week trying to get the IRIG to work. Sometimes I get absolutely nothing and other a very faint sound from the headphones. Even with the volume up all of the way I get almost nothing. I have called support and they have not been able to help me out. This is not a good practice tool and I regret buying it.

Very poor audio output - Dissapointed

By Anthony

from Alabama

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I was excited to finally get the iRig. Unfortunately it did not live up to its hype! I am not happy with the iRig at all. The volume through the headphones is VERY low and makes it almost useless. Also the cable that attaches it to the iPhone/iPad is too short. I would not recommend buying this product

I agree with the previous poster who was disappointed. I too cannot get a decent volume out of this device and I have tried everything that their support people have suggested. I would not recommend the irig to my worst enemy. Just does not work well at all................

Excellent Practice Tool

By Carl

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

Bought this a few weeks ago and have been using it as a fast replacement for kooking up my Guitarport for practicing new tunes for a busy cover band I play bass for. Very easy to use and set-up, sound great and is super compact. As a bass player I don't need all the effects modules, though I did wish a simple bass amp came standard instead of an additional cost download. not a big deal but like the Guitarport it oughta come with a basic guitar amp (it does) and basic bass amp (does not). Transferring songs is pretty simple , just make sure your computer with the songs to upload and your iPhone/iPod Touch are hooked to the same wireless router. It holds 20 songs, which is fine - we never add more than 4-8 at a time for our set development.

Very Good Little Gadget

By Anton Skvortsov

from North Bergen, NJ

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

This is an excellent gadget when you want to play your guitar with headphones. It's excellent for practice. Don't expect AmpliTube and your iPhone to replace a real amplifier and effects pedals. And certainly don't expect that this appliance can be used in live gig or anything of sort. But if you want to have a handy app on your iPhone which can give you a bit extra during a Jam Session with your friends - look no more. It has a Tuner which i find most useful, amount of effects in AmpliTube is more than enough. Don't bother with free version it sucks, just pay another $20 and get commercial AmpliTube - it's worth it. Only problem i found is the short cable which is only couple of inches long and iPhone kept sliding off my knee constantly. To solve this you'll need a female-to-male TRRS Audio Extension cable, DON'T buy regular 1/8" audio extension cables they wont work (I made that mistake and wasted 15 bucks). The jack needs to be 4-pole, do a google search for "Mogami 3.5mm TRRS 4-Pole Male to 3.5mm 4-Pole Female Cable" and you'll find one. Two of my local Guitar Centers never had these cables so i had to order online. As instructions say don't hookup the headphone output 1/8" directly to an amp - that will give you static, instead get 1/8" stereo cable which splits into 2 RCA jacks, which you can plug into a mixer or an audio interface. I haven't tried doing it other way around, but since it's almost an ONLY thing mentioned in hardware instructions - i'm sure it's true. You also might want to get "iKlip̣ۡ MINI" which just came out. It's an iPhone clip which can be put on any Mic stand for convenience. That will make it a TOTAL package. Bottom line - it's an expensive toy. But let's be honest it's a VERY nice toy!

iRig & Amplitube...WHAT A RIPOFF!

By stephen cloud

from Texas

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I've been interested in these since they came out. I figured it would be a sweet setup and would easily fit in my guitar case. Guitar Center had them on sale for $24.99, so I thought I'd give it a try. Came home, and went to download Amplitube. Uh-oh...there's a "free" version, and a paid version at $20. Opted for free to try things out. Seriously? $25 for a cable plug in, that includes NO software price reduction? The free versions of Amplitube are an absolute joke. One amp model...that's it. And, to top it off, if you want to buy Amplitube for your iPad, then use it on you iPhone...yup...you get to PAY FOR IT AGAIN! So, I tried the Peavey veresion of Amplitube, "Amped"...same deal...you pay for each effect, and each amp. LAME! It works with Garage Band, but has noise issues... This iRig seems REALLY noisy. Tons of noise...and static that sounds like there's a bad cable in the mix. Changed cables...no change in problem. Am I doing something wrong? Probably gonna take it back for a refund. $25 for the iRig, plus $40+ to get the software on my phone/ipad. Not worth the money, IMO. Just get a Korg Pandora or a Line6 Pocketpod...

Great little piece of gear

By Mark

from Chicago, IL

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I bought this back in November 2010 before I even owned an amp. I have three amps now but I still find myself using the iRig and Amplitube nearly every day. I live in a townhouse with other people and it's just easier this way. Does it blow my face off the way my amps cranked would? Definitely not but that isn't the purpose. The effects on the amplitube are very cool and I love the tuner.

Needs improvement with Aplitube specifically

By Braden Bickle

from Arlington, Texas

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

The actual hardware works like a charm overall. It does exactly what it says it will do. However, if you are buying it with the hopes of using it with Amplitube it has a ton of loud hissing and extra noise that really interferes with the sound quality. I have used it with both my iPhone 4 and my iPad2 and the hissing is the same for both. The plus side is that it works most of th other apps out there as well and doesn't produce his while in those environments. Ampkit, PocketAmp, JamUp, iShred; they all work without hiss. Honestly haven't tried with GarageBand yet, but with Amplitube Free and Fender Amplitube Free you'll get the hiss. Still fun as heck to play, jut use a lot of noise gate. Trying to Jo,d the guitar and the device at the same time. Is a little clunky too so figure out a way to make that work more efficicient and you'll be glad you did. Other than those thins and all the good effects being in-app purchases it's a pretty good deal overall.

Not my cup of tea...

By Christopher Nelson

from Austin, TX

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

I was rightly skeptical about this device and it didn't let me down. I suppose it makes a neat little toy to show to your friends, but the audio quality is pretty bad even for a practice tool. It has a lot of hissing when routed into GarageBand regardless of your levels. There's a little less noise with Amplitube, but it's still annoying. My major gripe is more about the way these software packages work on the iPad/iPhone...that is, there is no way to send them to the background and still get audio out of it. I would think about keeping it if I could use the modelling in GarageBand or Amplitube as a travelling practice amp while being able to read sheet music on the screen with forScore at the same time. However, both apps must be active on the screen or you lose any output. Bummer. I've opted to stick with my cheap little Vox headphone amp for travel audio. I'm not really interested in recording my guitar in GarageBand on the iPad as I've got a much better stand-alone system for that. So I can't think of any good reason to keep it. Now I'm off to return this thing...Peace out.

Beyond Bad

By Matthew Weeks

from NY

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

The IRig is a completely useless device. So much interference and noise. At one point I was picking up weird noises and radio stations. Go with the Jam by Apogee. It actually works and is easy to use and hook up. Stay away from the iRig. It is nothing more than a headache.

Works, but terrible noises

By Daniel

from San Antonio

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

You need to fiddle with the virtual amp volume the device volume, and the guitar volume, in order to play without having a terrible noise on the speakers ( the same noise that a mic and an amp make when you put them close) The app is trash, i tried the free one and never got to play something with background noises. But it works good on Garageband.

Nifty with one major design flaw

By JOHN DEWEES

from Northern Arizona

Comments about IK Multimedia iRig - Audio Interface Adapter for iPhone, iPod, iPad:

This is a cool little gadget. When married to my iPad with Amplitube it works as well as you would expect. The iPhone version of the software is useless due to the tiny screen. The one flaw that drives me crazy about the iRig is the mini line out to your mobile device. It's simply too short. So when you plug your massive 1/4 inch guitar cable into it it pulls your mobile device all over the place. A better design would simply have been two jacks.
