This is just a great versatile amp. It has everything, and makes you think "why don't other amps have this?". It's highly responsive. The clean channel has plenty of headroom and can be gained up to create awesome bluesy tones. The lead and ultra channels are super creamy.
The effects are decent, but if you have a finely tuned pedalboard or rack effects you probably won't use them. The serial effects loop works as it should. The MIDI implementation is simple, flexible, and reliable. The range of tones from the four channels is very impressive. It's German engineered, and, like an Audi, is capable, well thought out, and underrated.
In short, if you are looking for a great amp, get this. If your are just looking for a name, go get a Marshall and get half the amp for twice the price.
I REALLY dig this amp. I got rid of my mesa boogie triple rectifier to get it and it was worth it. The range of tones you can get is great for someone like me that likes to play many different styles of music and play different guitars (from fender to prs to gibson etc). I haven't had the chance to play with the on-board effects much but I did like what I've heard so far. The clean setting is warm and smooth but can be pushed a bit and get some twang if you want. Both british gains are true to form and the american high gain is crushing. Even with a tele or strat the american high gain makes it sound as mean as any mesa with a prs or gibson. I highly recommend this.
The word I've generally heard associated with Hughes & Kettner amps is "clean." As much as anything they're known for clean sound. But to me a clean sound would be a Gretch Jumbo electric "jazzbox" pushed through a Fender amp with neither distortion nor effects. I believe the H & K "clean" refers to its crispness. The sound itself is edgy howling and as good as any amp you can name. Another word I associate with these amps is underrated. I played the switchblade 100 then similarly priced Marshall, Fender, and Vox amps and guess what? The switchblade pulled out a switchblade (figuratively of course) and then cut them to pieces in terms of clearity, power, tone, and ease of operation. The H & K's other channels and the effects were similarly impressive. Buy this.
