A huge range of amazing tones, and iPad and Android connectivity.

The GrandMeister 36 is an all-analog tube amp with four independent channels: Clean, Crunch, Lead, and Ultra. The 36 watts 4x EL84 power amp is based on the TubeMeister 36, but the 3x 12AX7 preamp is completely redesigned and offers the widest tonal spectrum H&K has ever included in an amp, from sparkling clean to highest gain. Independent gain, master, EQ settings and even presence and resonance control plus a switchable boost for each channel provide you with all the versatility a guitarist could wish for.

How? The GrandMeister's Smart Rotary Controls allow each channel to have its own set of controls with only a minimum of pots since each control is fully remote controllable and programmable. That means you can create any sound you want, store it on 128 presets, and recall it via MIDI controller, interface or your iPad. Yes, the complimentary app for iPad enables you to check the setting of every single control, adjust them, assign names to the presets, and remote control the amp with your iPad - everything in real time. And the best news: the remote control is just the icing on the cake - all controls are accessible directly on the amp or the matching MIDI board FSM 432 MK III (sold separately).

Note: The GM36 remote app does not contain preset data. However, it does show the values of presets (the position of each knob and switch) stored in a GrandMeister 36 that is connected to your iPad and Android via MIDI. GM36 Remote app for iPad and Android lets you:
Watch and touch settings of analog tube tone on your iPad and Android
Add names to your ampĀ“s preset numbers
Benefit from extended effects control
Remote control your tone in realtime

And if you still feel there is something missing you might want to take advantage of the onboard effects and add some delay, chorus or one of the other modulation effects. By simply pressing FX ACCESS you can make the Smart Rotary Controls for the channel settings now work as effects controls, which keeps your user interface well structured and clear. The GrandMeister is also equipped with digital reverb as well as an intelligent dual break point noise gate, measuring the guitar signal at the input, but cutting the noise between the preamp and effects loop.

However, the GrandMeister wouldn't be called a Meister if it weren't for all the great features that made the Meister series so successful. The Power Soak is capable of converting the amp's output into heat and tone and thereby gives you the opportunity to break 36 watts down to 18, 5, 1 and 0 watts - it goes without saying that the Power Soak is programmable and controllable via MIDI as well. Hence you can enjoy the full tube sound at home without annoying your neighbors and even do silent recording at night. The built- in RED BOX genuinely simulates a 4x12" cabinet and sends the signal directly into the mixer, which makes it an amazingly helpful tool in the studio as well as on stage. And last but not least: The TSC (Tube Safety Control) is an automated system that constantly monitors and readjusts the bias to ensure the power tubes operate reliably and deliver the best possible tone.

The GrandMeister is a dream amp for every guitarist who wishes for unlimited access to great tube tone, including effects - all at a touch of a button.

  • Almost Perfect

As reviewed by CARL STEEN on 4/18/2014

This amp I recieved yesterday on my Birthday Ironically. It has all the features I have been in search of, 4 programable tube channels, along with effects and programable presence and resonance for 127 patches. Programable series effects loop, power attenuating PA,1,5,18, and 36 watt. Built in programable noise gate, redbox direct out along with a pre line out. It weighs 17lbs, is compact and comes with an efficient soft case. I have gave this amp a 4 rating and claim it to be almost perfect due to the limited effect control and quality, I'm spoiled with my Axe-Fx II. This amp relly sounds great and feels good under my fingers. It is alittle brite or brittle but I believe with more time into it I can EQ it to my tone standards. This is the design I have been searching for a along time. Perhaps a better set of tubes may be in order for this amp to perfect it. Great job Hughes & Kettner.

  • Great amp!

As reviewed by Brian on 12/28/2014

I've played through a lot of different amps over the years - I traded in my Marshall JVM210c to get this amp and I couldn't be happier. I loved the Marshall, but hauling around 75lbs was getting old - the H&K head is 17 lbs and the 1x12 is not much more so that in itself was worth it! The amp - this thing is 36 watts of awesomeness. If you think 36 watts isn't enough for you, I would bet that it is. I rehearsed with this with no mic or anything and my master volume was never above 3 - that's a lot of headroom if I needed it. I know a lot of people use this on 18 watts (power soak lets you pick 36, 18, 5, or 1 and if you set up patches, you can also choose the power option for that individual patch - handy feature. For example - rhythms could be on 18 watts while leads and clean might be at 36. There are all types of youtube vids on this amp and I watched every one of them - they don't do it justice in person, and they are good! The built in fx are great - in my floorboard I was only using a wah, delay, and phaser - I'm using the amps FX now and they sound better than my outboard ones (which was a tc electronic flashback x4, and a mxr phase 90) now it's guitar - wah - amp. Very clean! Anyway - here are some pros and cons, and I hope this helps someone else, but I will say honestly, this is my favorite amp I've owned - I've had Vox, Marshall, Fender, Line 6 and not low-end models - this thing smokes them all. Pros: Sound - it rocks on the clean and the crunch channels, flat out. Weight - I walked into rehearsal with my head, guitar, bag o' cables and a 32 oz drink in one trip as opposed to wrestling the 75lb Marshall down the stairs with both hands. Red Box out - amazing - that's all I can say. You get your amps sound when you go direct. The volume that you have set your patches at also is replicated through the redbox so you don't have to rely on a sound guy to turn up your solos. FX - very good - I love the delay on this amp - it sounds fantastic Power soak - you could play live with this on 18 watts and crank up the master volume to 12 or 1 oclock and be amazed. I use the 36 watt setting but only because I'm still messing with my patches. Clean - I love the clean sound of this amp - it's got enough punch and sounds fantastic EQ, Resonance/Presence - very good on the amp. The eq is by patch, while the resonance and presence are global - it gives you the ability to really craft a nice tone. MIDI - you can run the iPad app to configure your sounds - you could even use it live if you were so inclined. It does require an iRig MIDI though - so that's an extra cost Cons Patches that use different wattage - there is a noticeable and audible change when you do that. I haven't done it live yet but at low volume, I was kinda disappointed that the change was so loud. Noise - On the crunch/lead/ultra channels it seems like the amp is pretty buzzy. This is offset by the noise gate that's built in and works like crazy...but....when you put on a noise gate, you obviously lose the ability for chords to ring out to a certain volume. As soon as the gate is hit, your chords is gone. Still messing with that feature, but I will say that when I engaged it at a very low setting, it killed ALL the it works. That's really all I came up with - I'd highly recommend this amp to anyone looking for a new amp with great sound and flexibility. I've not felt this creative playing through an amp in a long time. I went with the 1x12 option and I gotta say, I'm totally happy with it - I've played combos for years (2x12's) and I'm not missing anything at all with the 1x12. Hope this helps ya out. If you go to my soundcloud page (profile is under rockandroll00) I made a VERY quick tone to do Far Behind by Candlebox and ran direct into Pro Tools - it's very cool and took almost no effort! Peace! Brian

  • The most innovative tube amp ever

As reviewed by Chris on 12/23/2014

I owned a Switchblade 100 head for 3 years, used it on several tours and recommended it to several artists, several of whom fell in love with it as well. I planned on buying one of the new Tubemeister 36's with the rare NOS tubes until I saw this thing. It's basically a miniature version of the Switchblade, but with way more features. The day I bought this head I tried out the stock tubes, which were ok for Chinese-made, but wound up throwing JJ's in it anyway. After that I tried it out of several cabs. My 4x12 with Vintage 30's sounded fine, but not perfect. My other 4x12 with Rocket 50's sounded a bit better and my 4x8 cab sounded the best, but not quite perfect. I wound up buying a 1x12 cab and throwing a vintage Eminence square-magnet 12 in it, which is absolutely perfect for this head. The cleans sound like a Princeton Reverb and the hi-gain sounds like a Mesa Mark V, but way better. I highly recommend this amp to all guitarists of all styles, can be used in the bedroom with jerk neighbors and paper-thin walls, or on stage with a full-band. The features and programmability are literally endless and the new footswitch is very well-designed. There's so many things about this amp I could write a book going over every feature, so quit reading this review and try one out yourself!
