The Old Standby, made in China, is about as good as you would expect from Hohner's budget harps. But that's not really good enough for the Old Standby. You see, the Old Standby is a classic harp model that dates back over a century to 1892. Up until recently, it was made in Germany, and was a splendid instrument. Generations of Country artists preferred the Old Standby as thier harp of choice. But since the 1990s, it is a Chinese made beginner's harp. What a terrible way to celebrate the model's centenial. This needs to change! Hohner, if you are listening to your customers, please return the Old Standby to a quality German made instrument again, but sell it at a lower price (like the Big River MS). To make the Old Standby unique, give it phospher bronze reeds, like the Suzuki Bluesmaster and the Bushman Delta Frost. Phospher bronze reeds are gaining popularity with harp players, and a German made Old Standby would be the perfect Hohner model to enter the phospher bronze market. Please listen to us, Hohner!

I love the Old Standby. The classic Hohner model 34b is an icon among harps that rivals the Marine Band. The sad thing is that Hohnor, for over a decade now, has been making Old Standbys in China with a significant decrease in quality. How I wish Hohner would restore the respect and greatness to model 34b by making it in Germany once again at a low price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River harps. It would be to Hohner's benefit to offer more German made models in the lower price range, and the Old Standby is a model that deserves such an upgrade the most. Come on Hohner...please make the Old Standby, model 34b, in Germany again at a price comparable to the Blues Bender and Big River models.

I bought 3 Hohner Old Standby harmonicas to give to my 3 granddaughters (5,4,&3) at our family Thanksgiving dinner. They were a huge hit and the girls were dancing as they played their first harmonicas. I pulled out my grandfather's old Hohner Echo and joined in. Thank you Hohner and Musician's Friend for carrying on a family tradition.

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

I recieved the 2 Hohner Old Standbys yesterday. I opened the Bb harp first, gave it a try and thought what a deal! Feels solid, plays well sounds great. Then I opened the one in the key of A and found hole 3 totally dead on blow and draw, and holes 6 thru 10 performing poorly and the whole harp generally difficult to play. I took the thing apart found brass filings inside and some stuck reeds. I gave it a thorough cleaning and hand tuned the reeds with the help of a web search, and after an hour or so of work, have another great harp, almost but not quite as good as my German harps. Its working perfectly. I think this indicates some quality control issues with the China made Hohners. I will order more of these. They turned out to be great harps. I enjoy tinkering with instuments, but if you lack the skill, or confidence to do some tuning and modifying on your own you may want to invest in a German made Hohner.

I bought these last ones to take to Uganda as presents, but the Old Standby is where I started and am still satisfied with the sound. I also play about ten or eleven other harmonicas including the Super Chromonica and the 280C. I have given them before as gifts and found them to be very substantial. A great beginner harp.

                      VERY Poor instrument

Comments about Hohner Old Standby Harmonica:

I ordered this harmonica as a low-end option so that I did not have to worry about losing it or damaging it. Additionally, I did not expect the sound quality to be all that great. However, I did expect it to play. I can't even use it for the one song that I ordered it for. If you need to draw on a single note, you will not be happy. For that matter, if you need to play any single note, you will probably end up red in the face for more than one reason. Do not consider buying this harmonica for a beginner or they will never play. This is a non-returnable item for Guitar Center. Probably a good choice on their part. By the way, I have a Hohner Golden Melody that plays well except for one note.

THE HARMONICA THAT I RECIEVED WAS BOXED LIKE A QUALITY HARP BUT THAT IS WHERE IT STOPPED. IT LEAKED BADLY MAKEING IT HARD TO SOUND THEN THE TUNNING WAS ALSO OFF. IT LOOKED GOOD BUT WAS NOT COMPETATIVE NOR COMPETATIVELY PRICED. I REALIZE IT IS A CHEAP HARP BUT OTHERS ARE MUCH BETTER FOR THE PRICE. JAMBONE, JOHNSON,HOODO, PEIDMONT BLUES ARE ALL 1/2 TO 1/3 THE PRICE AND I HAVE HAD BETTER LUCK WITH THEM.
