Overview

Whether you're playing down-home melodies on your back porch or fronting a blues band, the 590 Big River harmonica gets the job done. This reliable workhorse offers Hohner's highest standard of German quality. Featuring a 10-hole, airtight, plastic body for increased volume, an open-ended cover for sound projection, and contoured covers that are comfortable to hold, the Hohner 590 Big River harmonica really delivers the sound you seek.

The Hohner 590 Big River harmonica is an attractive and robust harp model that's a fine musical instrument for beginners, with solid volume and easy playability. The 590 Big River is also the choice of seasoned veterans and professionals, who recognize the harmonicas strong, dependable performance and German quality at an affordable price. The Hohner Big River can be called one of the best-valued harmonicas on the market. It has the quality and durability of Hohner's Special 20 and Marine Band harmonicas, yet it's more affordable, plus it has the advantage of replaceable reed plates, which is a money-saving alternative to throwing away out-of-tune harmonicas.

About MS-Series harmonicas:
The acronym 'MS' stands for Modular System, an integrated concept of Hohner's harmonica designs. MS-series harmonicas benefit from innovations that improve their playing characteristics and also significantly facilitate maintenance and handling. All MS-series parts (combs, reed plates, and covers) can be combined individually. Simple screw connections allow for easy assembly. This benefit offers players the possibility to adjust the instruments to their individual requirements. For example, some players prefer the body of one model and the cover plates of another, and so a "custom hybrid" is possible for the discerning player. Easy-to-install replacement reeds are available (see item: RP565 MS Replacement Reed Plates).

About Hohner:
Hohner is a family company founded in 1857 in Trossingen, Germany by Matthias Hohner. Hand-made quality and close attention to detail has set Hohner apart from the beginning. A top leading brand in harmonicas, Hohner harps are distributed worldwide. Hohner harmonicas are played on the street by buskers, in intimate nightclubs, on festival stages, and even in Carnegie Hall. Despite a diverse harmonica line used in music from country to classical genres, the most famous Hohner harmonicas are their simple, 10-hole diatonics used frequently by blues, rock, country, and folk musicians.

Hohner has a winner with their Big River harp. They offer many different models of harmonicas, and the Big River is German made with a modest price tag compared to most of their others. It has a plastic comb and is put together with screws for ease of maintenance. The covers and comb have support pillars, which is a nice feature if you've ever accidently crushed a harmonica. The design is of the new Modular System, which allows you to swap out reed plates if desired. Frankly, at the current price, I would just buy a new one if needed. A hard plastic protective case is provided, with a good design for air circulation. The right end of the harp is painted with the letter of the key, and the back of the comb is painted with the name Hohner. These two features give a quick reference as to orientation when you pick it up to play at a gig. Just don't clean the letters with alcohol, as they do come off (I found out the hard way). The notes on mine are tuned as accurately as most Hohners, and the tonal quality is quite good. This model is one of the best bargains in the diatonic harmonica world. Highly recommended!

The sound is full and in tune, the construction feels solid; after all it is made in Germany. However, this is the 3rd or 4th harmonica in this line that only lasted a few months. As I mentioned, I am NOT a hardcore heavy user, so I expected a lot longer life out of these instruments. I hope to find another option that will last longer. I wish someone would offer a solid intermediate harmonica that wouldn't break the bank--somewhere in between the current offerings of crap and high-end.
I am a full-time live singer-guitarist who only plays harmonica on a handful of songs during my gigs. The Big River series seemed at first like a real step up from the cheap harmonicas I had been using (Jambone, etc.) but it has been a disappointment.

Comments about Hohner 590 Big River MS-Series Harmonica:

I play in a club band. I would recommend the Big River over the Marine Band for everyday use. It has a reed plate comparable to the Marine Band, and the difference in the sound is miniscule. The Big River has a plastic comb between the reeds, instead of wood blocks. Wood block combs are a problem if you wet down the reeds before you play, like I do, because they can swell up and cut into your lips. I use the Marine Band for recording, but the Big River is better for everyday use and gigs, and it's quite a bit cheaper.

Comments about Hohner 590 Big River MS-Series Harmonica:

I have used special 20 harps for many years in the harmonica holder with my guitar. I decided to try this Big River harmonica which is a step below. It has its own qualities and is excellent. Not quite as warm as the 20 but again not expecting the same. Also all keys are a little different in tone quality and I have a higher pitched key of F. I recommend you try one out!

Comments about Hohner 590 Big River MS-Series Harmonica:

Hohner has been producing quality products since before WWII. I just needed one in the Key of G.

However, I must say that notes seem to go "flat" much more frequently now than they did years ago. Is there a way to have them economically repaired? I've got dozens of them.

I actually bought this harmonica as a Yankee Swap gift, so I can't speak for the quality of the instrument, but I can speak for the service. I ordered this item relatively late and kept my fingers crossed that I would receive it on time for the Yankee Swap. It arrived in two days, plenty of time for the swap! The service was great and I would not hesitate to ever order another instrument from them. By the way, the harmonica was a hit!

I've been playing harmonica now for around 8 months and can bend and play single notes pretty well. I even played the harp lead for "What I Like About You" with my band recently, on my Big River (D) and they were pretty impressed. Anyway, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents to say that I think this harp is way underrated. My other 3 harps, C, G and A, are all Special 20s and they're good too but my Big River can totally hang with them and it's cheaper. That makes it an excellent value. I'd say it's the go to harp for beginners 'cause you can take it on stage someday and not have to shell out for a better one when you're ready.
