Overview

The Hohner 532 Blues Harp Harmonica helps you dig in deep and experience the raw power and grit of the blues. The Blues Harp is engineered for consistent volume and tone that's ideal for intense blues playing. The Hohner Blues Harp can hang with the toughest harmonica players on their most serious gigs. The Blues Harp is highly bendable and has a dirty, dark, hard rockin' sound. One of Hohner's classic models, the 532 Blues Harp is emphasizes the best qualities of blues harmonica playing. Hohner builds the Blues Harp with a wood comb and thin reeds, allowing for easier note bending. Musicians like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith and Lil' Ronnie Owens of the Grand Dukes have favored the Hohner Blues Harp for its power and bluesy tone.

About MS-Series harmonicas:
The acronym 'MS' stands for Modular System, an integrated concept of Hohner's harmonica designs. MS-series harmonicas benefit from innovations that improve their playing characteristics and also significantly facilitate maintenance and handling. All MS-series parts (combs, reed plates, and covers) can be combined individually. Simple screw connections allow for easy assembly. This benefit offers players the possibility to adjust the instruments to their individual requirements. For example, some players prefer the body of one model and the cover plates of another, and so a "custom hybrid" is possible for the discerning player. Replacement reeds are available (see item: RP565 MS Replacement Reed Plates).

About Hohner:
Hohner is a family company founded in 1857 in Trossingen, Germany by Matthias Hohner. Hand-made quality and close attention to detail has set Hohner apart from the beginning. A top leading brand in harmonicas, Hohner harps are distributed worldwide. Hohner harmonicas are played on the street by buskers, in intimate nightclubs, on festival stages, and even in Carnegie Hall. Despite a diverse harmonica line used in music from country to classical genres, the most famous Hohner harmonicas are their simple, 10-hole diatonics used frequently by blues, rock, country, and folk musicians.

Hohner decided to take the classic Blues Harp and "improve" on it. This harp used to be put together with nails, and was difficult to service. The case used to be a soft plastic material with snaps. Many people hate the new modular system harmonicas, but I think that they are much more practical for maintenance, and the new hard plastic case protects the instrument much better. If you still want an old-school design, buy the Marine Band. I could never see much difference between the two original models, despite claims that the Blues Harp was easier for bending notes. The new Blues Harp has retained the old pearwood comb, so if you want a truly modern model, you'll have to look for one with a plastic comb. Anyone who can hear a noticeable difference between a plastic comb and a wooden comb has a very gifted ear. Bottom line, Hohner has given its devotees several choices, and I happen to enjoy them all!

I bought this as a beginner in G, and the lower inhaled notes didn't sound right then but I thought that's just how they were made. I know now to open it immediately after purchase and try every note in front of the clerk. Not sure how a new one sounds today, but I recently bought a Golden Melody in C and am very happy with it.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

It works well for me in both blues and Dylanish guitar accompaniment. But for some reason my A harmonica has problems at 5-6 hole. Maybe it's me but this is my 3rd in 2 yrs

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

This one in particular sounds great. The problem with reeds is that they are not consistent (I also play tenor sax and reeds are always an issue). Sometimes you get a bad one - and they're not cheap. When I started playing harp about 20 years ago, harps were $18. I also use Special 20's. Depending on the key, I switch back & forth, depending on the tone I want. For example - "A" rocks with the Blues Harp. And the "E" is great as well as it gives you a bigger sound for a high pitched key. In "C", "D", "G", and "B" I use Special 20's - it's a matter of personal preference. Occasionally, I'll use a Marine Band.

Comments about Hohner 532 Blues Harp MS-Series Harmonica:

I go the A blues harp about a week ago and I just can't put it down!! To start off with the blues harp has a great tone with it's wooden comb and brass reeds. The notes are very bendable right out of the box and the harp feels really good in the hand. The blues harp also has a really good weight in my opinion, meaning that it doesn't feel that you are holding a cheap harmonica. The tone is warm and inviting and I can see why this harmonica is perfect for the blues. Now there are some negatives to every harmonica and I would have to say that the harp is not the most airtight harmonica ever but I think that it just adds to the warm tone while still going ham on a solo at a gig. The blues harp also has an edge to it. The cover plates come a little past the comb and might feel uncomfortable for the first few jams but you will get used to it and it will not be a big problem. The blues harp is fantastic with chords and soul playing but is not the best for crisp single notes if you are looking for something like that I would buy a golden melody. Over all this harmonica is up their with my favourites and it can only get better from here. I hope that this review helped you.

I used this harmonica to accompany my band and, as the drummer, I needed something that cuts. This did the job perfectly. Notes bend easily to offer up that bluesy tone without having to rely on cupping your hands on the harp. Overall, a great buy.
