Exceptional sound and a sealed bamboo comb make it the professional player's go-to harp.

With the Marine Band Crossover Harmonica, Hohner has expanded the Marine Band series to introduce a top-of-the-line, professional-quality harmonica for discerning musicians who play modern blues, rock, jazz, soul, or funk.

The Marine Band Crossover Harmonica's revolutionary laminated-bamboo comb is completely sealed, making it water repellent and exceptionally stable. In combination with the screw-together assembly, the Marine Band Crossover is extremely airtight, with fast, even response and a raspy, powerful sound that's exceptionally well-suited to amplified playing as well as acoustic styles.

The crossover Marine Band harmonica's modern-compromise tuning is ideal for single-note playing in different positions as well as easy note bending for contemporary blues, rock, jazz, soul, and funk, while still ensuring a full chord sound. The Marine Band Crossover is an optimal addition to the Marine Band harmonica series. The Marine Band Crossover uses the same reedplates as Hohner's Marine Band Deluxe harmonica for interchangeability.

Due to the Marine Band Crossover's compromise tuning, chord playing is smooth and full and the single notes also play nicely in-tune, so playing in positions other then 1st and 2nd is not a problem for intonation. Because of the airtight construction (a sealed comb and screws instead of nails to attach the reedplates), bending, overblows, and overdraws are much easier then on most other diatonic harps. This is great news for beginners learning to bend and speedsters and overblowers out there looking for an airtight harmonica that can keep up with their playing.

Testimonials about Hohner's Marine Band Crossover:

Dave Gage: "One of the best-sounding and playing diatonic harmonicas out-of-the-box. Great for players of all levels and musical styles and worth the extra penny for the increased quality and playability. The sound is bright, but not overly bright. It plays as well as expensive, customized harmonicas."

Joe Filisko: "This Crossover is an exceptional harmonica. I have to say that this is without any doubt the best playing out-of-the-box harmonica that I've ever had my hands on. It's a notable, substantial upgrade to the diatonics I have played. It played very well. That's a big deal, because I trusted it. The tuning is superb; responsiveness is excellent. It's very responsive. The bends are right there."

Steve Baker: "As a Marine Band player for 40 years I really love the Crossover and am proud to have been closely involved in its development from the very beginning. The first time I played the very first prototype with a bamboo comb I was blown away by the sound, volume, response and playing feel and thought 'this is it!' I own a lot of custom harps, but this is what I use on stage because it's tough, reliable, and both plays and sounds great."

Jerry Portnoy: "The Marine Band Crossover is a terrific harp in every aspect: beautiful, sealed bamboo comb; strong, attractive cover plates and; most importantly, well tuned with good volume and projection; plus smooth, responsive playability from bottom to top. It also comes in a handy and unique zippered case. I've made it my personal harp of choice. Another winner from Hohner!"

Phil Wiggins: "It's beautiful. It is nice right out of the box. Great tone. Great feel. I'm loving it."

Dennis Gruenling: "I like the comb a lot: how it felt, how it responded, how it sounded. The feel and response is closer to a custom Marine Band."

R.J. Mischo: "The Crossover is a great instrument! I've been playing professionally since 1979 and have tried all the models and this is the best out-of-the-box harp yet."

David Barrett: "The Crossover is Hohner's best harmonica to date . . . great feel, playability, and most importantly, great sound! For those who want the great sound of our forefathers but the playability of a modern-designed harmonica, put Hohner's Crossover harmonica at the top of your shopping list."

James Conway: "I needed a five overblow and it was there. To get a rack-mounted, five overblow right out of the box-I was happy with that."

  • Exceptional Harmonica

As reviewed by Mike Stevenson on 4/13/2011

I am a dedicated Hohner Marine Band player and this Crossover has just taken a great harp up to the next level. If you like the way a stock Marine Band will be amaized by this harp. Very responsive, easy to bend with a loud bright sound. Also, overblows are easy to get because of the tight reed gapping. The Crossover is like getting a custom harmonica for a lot less money.

  • Great Acoustic Harp

As reviewed by Dar Walker on 11/3/2013

I am a 40 year Harp player. I am Also currently a gigging harp player. The Crossover is an out of the box fantastic Harp for acoustic play. Closest thing to a custom harp out if the box I've ever played. Having said that I would also add that I have been playing Special 20'S ever since they first came out in the 80's and have always swore by them. I was yearning for the old wood comb sound that the Marine Band I learned on in the 70's gave. So I took the plunge and got a whole set of Crossovers. After about 10 gigs with them I found the sound to be shrill and lacking bottom end when amplified. I play through a blues deville 4 x 10 modified for harp. Again for acoustic play, Crossovers are the best I have found. But, I am going back to Special 20's for mic'd up playing because the low end and air tightedness of the sealed covers with no side vents, like the Spec. 20 has, is better sounding, deeper, fuller sounding to me. No harp will make a mediocre player sound great, that is true. It takes practice to develop tone and technique but the Special 20 is al a good harp player needs. My 3 cents. Dar Walker

  • Much louder and responsive than my case of Lee Oskars

As reviewed by Owen Poteat on 3/26/2012

On the advice of another harp buddy I bought a C and G of these before Christmas, hoping I could take them with me to this year's IBC in Memphis, which I did. They blew me away with how loud and responsive they are. Easy to bend... Much, much easier to overblow. I have a case with 15 Lee Oskars and 2 Crossovers now that go with me to every show. I wish I could just have 17 Crossovers but since they aren't in minor keys that won't happen, plus it would cost a ton to replace them all. I planned to phase out the LO's as I needed to replace reeds but the 2 Crossovers I have are just so much better that I've decided to pull the trigger and replace 4 more of them now. Most of the time I play harps through a Stranad harp mic in a rack but there are times when I just don't carry as much equipment and just use the vocal mic for the harp. I have to blow the crap out of the LO's to get them to be even close to loud enough but the Crossovers are so loud the mic picks them up just fine. I've been a long time LO player and have even spent some time with the man in Memphis but loyalties only go so far... If something makes me sound noticeably better then it gets added to my arsenal. That's the case with Crossovers. I know they are expensive but for me they are worth it. I'd suggest getting one or two of them like I did nd compare them to your current harp... I bet you buy more of them soon after.
