I'm switching from guitar to bass in my current band and this is the instrument that's helping me doit. It's a little smaller scaled and the violin body is smaller than your traditional bas, which is perfect for someone leary of taking on the task of bassmaster. I don't have a quality amp yet and have just been running it through PAs, but I still notice a very warm, full tone. I think it'd be ideal for garage rock, punk reggae, dub, stuff of that nature. Or Beatles covers if you're playing Paul McCartney.

I bought this Hofner H-Series 4 weeks ago because it was looking really cool and I had read some good reviews. However this was returned back because of some problems with the magnetic pickups (there was a rattling sound from their housing). Guitar Center change it with another one (no problem). Now this second one was OK for a couple of days and then the metal cover of the pickups drop off. This time I decided not to bother taking it back (no time for this) and I repaired it myself. Then I noticed that the pickup assembly within its housing was loose, OK I fixed it. After that I noticed that it was almost impossible to tune the strings at the correct frequency at all frets (no matter the adjustments). The conclusion is that is a poorly manufactured instrument, not good enough to play with it. I hanged it on the wall it looks good. Now if you buy the hard case for it you will find that it does not fit, I had to return the case back.

I play in a classic rock band and we do quite a few Beatles tunes. This fits my needs for them. Maybe interested in the better models too.

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

i never was a real fan of th violin bass. i thought it was a little tooo p mcartney, but i saw a guy playing one at a show and he sounded real good. being left-handed, they have this bass at the local mudic store and wow. This bass is amasing. the switches and mast vol and mast tone are cool. I must have played it for an hour (pluged into an aoustic mini-stack). growl and firm to solid booming bass its got it all with flavor. I immidiately thought of it as a killer recording bass. I should have bought it....

    Fantastic Bass

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

From the moment I grabbed this fine instrument out of the box it has played like a dream. Hofner Icon is great. Tone, feel, action, everything. I will buy some flat wounds for it one day, but for now the round wounds work and sound just great. Please listen to me, if you are on a budget and even if you are not buy this bass. I don't believe you will ever regret it. The folks at Guitar Center in Naperville IL were a pleasure to work with, thanks guys. I got it shipped to me in three working day. I could not be happier with it. It looks beautiful. The finish is flawless and it is just down right great to look at too. Thanks again to Guitar Center.

    Nice

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

I purchased this for my 13 y/o son who is really into the Beatles. It is a very nice guitar. He can't wait for the other items needed to play...amp, picks, case. The guitar gets 5 stars but for the price, there should be at least a plastic or fabric case and/or some picks included in the purchase for the sake of good customer service. We checked the box twice and apparently everything is separate causing me to have to do even MORE just to get him to be able to play his first note! My next purchase will be in a store in person so a human being can properly advise me.

    Hofner Review by Yuusuke

    By Yuusuke

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

Well being a lefty musicians its rare to find a bass enough! But finding a great bass is harder too. Because of how expensive it can be. This was cheap plus hofner company is left-hand bias (=When I bought this hofner I was so excited! It's feel it's shape and everything are pretty good. It broke on me as soon as I got it, the part where you plug it in just snapped. (GET IT CHECKED OUT BEFORE PLAYING) I got mine immediately fixed, I also bought flatwound strings for it, the best kind for a hollowbody bass such as this. From then on the rest has been history and this bass has not disappointed me since.

Dont want to spend 2.000 on a German Hof, buy this

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

First off this is my second icon. The first one was a gift from an ex in the transparent black finish. I wanted the Sunburst finish so I sold it. I have heard some negatives about the Icons finish. This one is perfect and blemish free and the neck action and intonation was right on the money. Great Bass!!!

Good Value for the money and it IS a Hofner

    By Paul Ramon

    from Indianapolis, IN

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Left-Handed Bass:

For many years I've wanted a Hofner Violin Beatle Bass but could never justify the $2000 cost of the German produced version. The Icon is made in China hence the lower price and quality but hey, it IS a Hofner. I compared it to a friend's 'genuine' 60's Hofner and the dimensions are exactly the same and the weight was very close. The black volume control knobs are disappointing as was the flamed maple finish. The Icon's finish is very bright and the contrast of the black edges too sharp. I bought my son a Rogue Violin Bass last year and I much prefer the finish on it. The Rogue is gorgeous! The waist of the Rogue is a little wider then the Hofner's and fits on my knee much more comfortably. The edge on the Rogue is also more rounded and doesn?t cut into my gut as much when I sit. The craftsmanship on the Rogue is excellent. After unpacking my Icon I immediately noticed there was a crazy noise coming from the hollow body whenever I turned it over. I considered shipping it back for an exchange but since it was already out of stock again - didn't. My local guitar shop tech removed the control panel and out fell a couple inch square pieces of polyurethane finish. This wasn't caused by the UPS man; this was caused by sloppy assembly. The solo/rhythm treble & bass switches are still a bit of a mystery to work but having said all of that - I love my Icon. I?ve put La Bella Beatle Bass (short scale) flat wound strings on it and it sounds simply wonderful. It is fun to play and weighs only about 5 pounds. If you are looking for a Beatle bass and are on a budget then the Rogue is the best value. But, if you also just got to have that Hofner logo, then select the Icon. It won't make a McCartney out of you but it is a great feeling to be that much closer to being him.
