I ordered the bass online so I didn't actually see or touch it until it was delivered. I was relieved and overwhelmingly impressed with the quality of the workmanship and overall appearance of the bass especially considering the very low price. It's been over a month now since it was delivered and it remains my favorite for stage performing. I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend the Hofner Icon Bass.

Well, for starters, I love this bass and the overall design. Can't put it down! I did, however, receive a bass with several manufacturing flaws that made it very frustrating. For the price I was not surprised, but I was still disappointed. On close inspection the binding work is very sloppy, with stain from the wood splashed over on parts. Also, I received a tailpiece that had the detail pieces soldered/welded on crooked and chromed over. And, worst of all, it came unplayable because there was a short at the cheap output jack. I will say, however, that I kept, fixed, and love mine and doubt I will ever part with it. To their credit; Guitar Center gave me a partial refund because I did not have the time to go through the return process. These are great instruments but, in terms of build quality, you get what you pay for!

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

Great sound for the size and price. I love it. The only problem is the neck is too heavy for the body (or the body too light for the neck). I have attached a one pound weight to balance, but I am looking for a more elegant solution.

Very close to the original, much better quality and sound than you would expect. I bought a second one just so I could pickle my original '65.

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I got my bass used, but was in brand new condition. It came complete with a hard shell, which makes it a great addition to the package. After getting it setup with flatwound strings, It stayed perfectly in tune. I love the nice midrange punch. I'd play it at a jazz gig in a second! I played it at a Broadway show accompanied with a couple of Boss effects, and it sounded great. The neck is thinner and is shorter scaled than a Fender P or Rickenbacker 4003. It is also very lightweight and comfortable to strap on. I highly recommend a professional set up, as it may have a "floating" bridge, making it go out of tune often. Because it's not active, you may also want to get a noise gate if you play in venues with lots of fluorescent lighting. Other than that, awesome bass!!

I had this bass for maybe 4 months and I got rid of it as soon as possible. It was fun to play, but the amount of maintenance I had to go through was unbearable.

          Awesome!!!...

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I was a little worried from past reviews about having to do some minor repairs to tweak this bass to its potential. To my pleasant surprise,a quick tuning a it was ready to go!!! I was also glad to see that the most recent version of this bass comes with a hard-shell case(not the best, but it works...) The short-scale of this bass makes it great for guitar players like me to have some fun channeling my inner "Macca". The only thing that I would want to see on this bass are flat-wound strings, but hey, that's just a player preference!

Would not hold its tune for even 30 minutes.

          By

          from Houston, TX

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

This bass did not cut it for me. The most important thing in any guitar is that it tune up and hold its tune. This bass fails in that. I had a hard time tuning it to begin with, I think that's because the lightweight construction allows the bass to flex as you tighten the strings. So every string you tune knocks the other ones out. Once I finally got it tuned perfectly I could hear it sliding out of tune right away, within 15 minutes. Over a single set of songs or a one hour rehearsal it would slide out so far that it was sounding horrible. Unfortunately it's difficult to tune fast so it was hard for me to retune between songs. I returned it for a refund. As expected for this bass, its intonation is also not great even when it is tuned up. As you play further up the neck you will get a variety of variable tunings. The tech at Guitar Center educated me that adjusting the neck so that the strings don't have to be pressed down so far to make contact with the frets may help that problem. That makes sense since the more you deflect the string when fretting the more it's going to stretch. All that aside, this bass is awesome fun. It just looks fantastic: retro, nostalgic, and yet somehow still hi-tech and cool. Other than McCartney this bass hasn't been seen that much (perhaps because it's not a great bass) so it's not overexposed. It's also light on the back, neck, and shoulders, easy to play, and way fun to play. Guitar Center also has the German made Hofner available at $2500 (you really have to wonder about that, it'll take a lot of $50 gigs to pay that one off). Guitar Center also has an $800 model of the Hofner bass...that one might be worth checking out but they don't have any at stores near me.

          Better than expected!

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

So, I went into guitar center the other day and I came across this bass. In my 4 years of bass playing I'd never actually played a violin bass and my fellow bass players never gave this bass much credit, so I decided to humor it. When I sat down with it I was surprised by how great the neck feels on this bass! I understand why most bass players don't like it because the average bass player is usually fairly tall, and I barely break 5'10, so this bass feels perfect with me. Aside from bass playing I play lead guitar and the thin short scale neck makes bass playing so much more comfortable and inspiring. Aside from the comfort of the bass, the pickups sounded really good actually and the switching gives you more than enough tonal options. Don't let people confuse you, if you're a smaller bass player looking for a great sounding/looking/playing bass that fits you, then this bass is a must and I'll definitely be buying one soon!

          NICE BASS BUT HAS FLAWS

          By

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I bought this bass in 2010. they did not have it at my local guitar center so i ordered it from, there. I picked it up about three days later and went home to play it. I was extremely impressed. It was very light so it didn't hurt my neck like modern basses. It is also much shorter than fender basses so I find it easier to move around on. One year after I bought it my jack plate was loose and my chord continued to fall out. I took it to guitar center and they said that, that part was made cheap so they replaced it with one that works better. There is also some buzzing on the lower chords and it does kind of sound like a really low guitar but overall it is a very good buy and a very good bass

          Great For The Price

          By

          from Germantown, MD.

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I have a 1971 Hofner Beatle Bass that I use in a Beatles Tribute band. I was looking for something that I could practice with at home, so I could leave my old Hofner where we rehearse. I saw the Icon Bass on a stand at GC and wound up messing with it for almost an hour. While it is not the same quality as my Hofner, it was very comfortable and sounded great when plugged in. If your looking for the McCartney sound and you're on a budget, the Hofner Icon Bass is a good option.
