Well, for starters, I love this bass and the overall design. Can't put it down! I did, however, receive a bass with several manufacturing flaws that made it very frustrating. For the price I was not surprised, but I was still disappointed. On close inspection the binding work is very sloppy, with stain from the wood splashed over on parts. Also, I received a tailpiece that had the detail pieces soldered/welded on crooked and chromed over. And, worst of all, it came unplayable because there was a short at the cheap output jack. I will say, however, that I kept, fixed, and love mine and doubt I will ever part with it. To their credit; Guitar Center gave me a partial refund because I did not have the time to go through the return process. These are great instruments but, in terms of build quality, you get what you pay for!

Hofner Icon B BASS

By Ron

from Cleveland Ohio

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

Wow! They must have retrained their quality control people. Mine came near flawless. Only has 1 tiny speck of schmutz next to a side fret dot, miniscule really. Looks great, sounds very good with the roundwounds, but will be putting on some flats soon. I've had 3 Vint Hofners over the years, but could never justify having that much money tied up in a semi used bass. Now at this price, No worries mon! Thanks to Hofner for filling a niche.

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I recently purchased the Hofner Icon series Bass and I am totally pleased. It has such a pleasant and warm tone. It is a dream to play and the action was perfect right out of the box. The short scale is fine. The best part about this bass is that it is so light. You can play it all night without getting a sore back. I left the round wound strings on because they sound great. I just love the looks of this instrument. It is worth the money just to look at it. All I have to do now is find a place to buy "Tea Cup" knobs!

What a value!

By Dwayne

from SoCal

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

This is the third Hofner violin bass I've owned, the first being a mid-70's, and the second being an original '64, but this Chinese one may be the best. The mid-70's had pickups with awful feedback. The original '64 had a dead E-string, even with brand new strings. This one (with LaBella flatwounds) sounds great... warm and round. The neck was straight; no adjustments necessary. The finish was fine--I couldn't find any flaws. The only problem was that the tailpiece had been installed off center. This made the strings "bend" at the saddle. I made the decision to get out the drill and fix this flaw. Oh, one more problem: the jack was loose on its mounting plate, which was a simple fix.

Fantastic product.

By Robert Tabrizi

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I recently recieved this particular bass as a gift and was not all that excited when I saw it. Until of coarse, I plugged it in. I was completely amazed by the clarity in tone and magnificent blend this bass had. Possibly the amp's doing, but no doubt also a direct result of having an outstanding instrument plugged into it. Having great looks as well as sound, I recommend this for anyone who wants to play a Hofner bass but can't afford the more expensive models. It's an absolutely fabulous intstrument.

You get what you pay for.

By Adam Schroeder

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I just got this bass. Been playing it all evening. Has an outstanding sound, even with my Fender Rumble 15 amp. Reading reviews on this bass at a various number of websites, I was nervous. Sound quality: 5 stars, construction: 3-0 stars. I got lucky with mine and the only problem with it was the back pick up. It wasn't fastened in correctly and it will move up and down in the socket. Doesn't affect the sound at all though. All in all, very happy with this bass. Just be prepared to fix a few problems.

It was Hofner at First Sight

By Orlando Valdez

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

The Hofner Icon Series Vintage Violin Bass, is a must add addition to your collection of instruments that are in your "Classical" section. It not only looks cool, it plays strong on it own. It's Very Light weight, I almost feel like I can break it, which is probably not a good thing. If you want the real thing and don't have the money, this is your next best bet.

hofner icon beatle bass

By robert pinter

from buffalo n.y.

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I just got home from guitar center in buffalo with my new hofner icon bass. I just have to say " I AM IMPRESSED " the work that they put into this bass is very very good ! sturdy construction, great binding work and high gloss finish. of course it's not the german made violin bass like mccartneys, but for the price, you cant beat this. after setting the intonation, pluging into my fender amp..and wow!! for mini hofner humbuckers the have that hofner beatle sound. the fret work is very good..no buzzing at all. but if you have the cash for the german made bass..go for it, but this one is every inch hofner. after playing knock-off copies..this is the real deal !! hats off to guitar center in buffalo n.y. for the great service !

PERFECT!

By Dan Garc_a|

from Huixquilucan, Edo. de Mxico

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

At first I thought I was spending a lot of money in an instrument I really never knew if I could play well, but it turned out to be fun and very easy to play thanks to the 3/4 scale. The small distance between frets and strings makes it a MUST HAVE for beginners, plus the looks are great, it's very light so it wont hurt your back at all. The only negative thing this bass has are the strings, they're really cheap, but hey if you already spent about $400.00 dls in this baby just buy some new strings!! Thumbs up for Hofner and for Guitar Center!!!!

Great first bass

By Pete

from Virginia, USA

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

After one week this bass has lived up to the other reviews. It plays great, you can get a nice sound out of it and it is fun to play. The lightweight body and the 3/4 scale neck make this great for guitar players that want to expand their instrument knowledge. I bought it through the Web site and it was packaged well and played right out of the box. I have not needed to make any adjustments (the bridge was properly aligned, an earlier problem that they may have addressed). But it does seem like some of the materials are a little cheap, the screw heads and metal parts seem toy-like. The end of the pickguard was sharp as a dagger and I had to file it down so no one will gore themselves. I am going to try some different strings and see what that sounds like. Bottom-line - fun to play, nice tone, nicely finished body.

What a great Bass!

By Eric Bergeron

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

This is a fantastic bass for beginners & professionals, although I am a beginner I've had several pro's come up and ask to play mine and just seeing their faces is well worth the $$ I spent and I know with time and practice this will sure be a hard bass to put down.

BUZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

By Jaime N

from Wintersville, OH

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

First of all, Guitar Center Customer Service was EXCELLENT. First I ordered an Ibanez acoustic, but when it was delievered, I didn't like it. I took it back, couldn't find my receipt...NO PROBLEM. They gave me store credit, so I went home and read up on some basses. I decided to buy the hofner. I brought it home and when I started using a pick(I use both pick and fingers)that thing was buzzing BAD all over, but mainly on the first fret E, A, D. I took it back to GC and the their luthier set it up and he did an AWESOME job. This thing plays great. Because I just bought it, setup was 1/2 off. BUY THIS BASS! Sounds like no solid body bass...sure the parts are cheaper than the REAL hofner, but you will definitey get the sound you're looking for.

Great Bass

By The Minimalist

from Lenexa, KS

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

The spacing on the frets is almost like playing guitar. For being a bass, it is light. Much lighter than my guitar. Sounds that I got out of this thing are unbelievable. It plays like a bass should. One of the best buys I've ever done.

Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass

By Ronnie Savage

from Gretna, Louisiana

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

I am a transplant from New York who has lived in La. for 24yrs. I learned to play the Bass listening to Paul McCartney's Bass lines with the Beatles back in the 60's, and since living here have been hooked on the Blues. I've had my Icon Series Bass about 2 weeks now and "baby I'm amazed" at how well this Bass plays, feels, and looks. I've sat in with a Blues Band three times and I love the deep rich sound she produces, and the way other Bass players have stood in line to play her. I have a Rickenbacker Bass, Fender Precision Bass, and a Epiphone Viola Bass, but by far my Hofner Icon Series Violin Bass is the best. I believe that I have hit the Motherload!!

BUY THIS BASS

By Kevin

from Pennsylvania

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

The best bass I have ever owned. Everything is great about it. It's lightweight, fantastic sunburst color, and most importantly sounds great. I was thinking about saving for the Vintage Hofner or Contemporary series, but this bass is the real deal, and a steal for the price. If you play Beatles music and play bass, you HAVE to get this. Play Beatles tunes just like Paul did and still does.

Hofner Icon Bass

By Louie

from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

As an owner of an original 1962 Hofner Bass that my mom bought me when I was a kid I had to laugh when I saw the Icon last year. Well I bought one. When I recieved it I was impressed by the way it looked. Problem #1 the strings were flat wound and rusted and the plastic nut was cracked. #2 no binding on the head stock and the Hofner logo was barely visible. I played it through my vintage Vox T-100 bass amp and the sound was very poor. I still liked the way it looked. After sending it back to a Hofner dealer, they put on a bone nut, put on Hofner Black Diamond flat wound strings and gave it a tune up Paul McCartney would of been proud of. It's excellent, only bass I'm playing now! I've been playing it now for over a year and not one problem with it since. So if you buy one be prepared to have work done on it.

Big Sound!!!

By Zeb

from Portland, OR

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

Iۡm an overweight right handed Paul McCartney impersonator; I donۡt have enough money to get the real deal Hofner. So I picked up one of these. Itۡs got great tone and playability for the price. My only real complaint is that itۡs a smaller bass and I have very large fingers. Other than that the Icon is a steal thatۡs put my band ۡ̏Sheۡs so heavyۡݕ_ one step closer to getting out of momۡs basement and on the stage!! I just couldn't be happier with my purchase!

If you really want...

By John

from St. Paul, Minnesota

Comments about Hofner Ignition Series Vintage Violin Bass:

to catch the vibe of the Hofner you're better off saving your money for their higher priced, and better built, models. My experience of the Icon has been a disappointment, great looks but inconsistent quality and construction. If you're simply looking for a great bass in the 2 - 5 hundred dollar range Guitar Center has plenty of them so unless you're dead set on looking like Paul McCartney (it's better to just be you) take a look around and you'll find better than the Icon.
