Overview

A year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of Walter Hofner's original violin bass, made famous by a certain Beatle who shall remain nameless, they have decided to produce a contemporary version. It has a vintage look that will produce many "oohs", and an internal sustain block that creates a more modern, deep-resonating sound that will produce many "aahs." It's the kind of bass guitar people love to see, play, and hear.

Aesthetically, this model features a maple-beech-maple set neck with rosewood fretboard accentuated by mother-of-pearl dot inlays, the signature Hofner violin bass headstock, a brass trapeze tailpiece, and glossy spruce top with glossy flamed maple back and sides. An ebony bridge with movable metal saddles maintains intonation and string spacing. The nickel-plated hardware and floating celluloid pearl pickguard give it an extra little pop for the eyes.

On the electronics side, you're working with two original Hofner 511B 'Staple' humbucking pickups, as well as a control panel with 2 volume controls, 2 on/off switches, and a rhythm/solo switch for volume boost. The overall sound is warm like the original model, but with a little more sonic kick for a more "now" sound. Includes case.

The 500/1 Contemporary Series is a bump up from the Icon B series. This model is made in China like the Icon B, but the wood and electronics are much better. The little bass really has a surprising kick to it. The bass and the treble are very effective on this model and the Bass Solo switch really kick the sound up when needed. The look of the bass is beautiful. So, not only is it great on the ears but on the eyes as well. If you want a quality Hofner without really breaking the bank? Then the H500/1 is the one for you.

I bought the instrument to play in a touring band. It's short scale and I'm small so it worked well for me. The sound is great, sounds upright. It is a terribly unstable instrument due to its hollow body and floating bridge. The intonation is horrible, I wish I could return this instrument, and get my money back.

Very Sweet Bass

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I must say that I'm very impressed with this bass guitar. I've played many basses over the 30+ years of playing and this bass not only looks great, but has great playability! super low action, excellent paint and quality workmanship. For that price, you really can't afford not to have one in your collection! The tonal ability is surprising with a good spread of sound quality. If you allways wanted a Hofner, but couldn't afford one, check this one out!

Incredible!

By Beatle Bass Bob

from Red Hill, PA

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I have played bass semi-professionally for almost 40 years and have mostly played Fenders, but have always wanted to own a Hofner bass. Cost was always a factor but this bass has the price points, quality, and sound that that made me want to purchase it. Out of the box, it was in perfect shape, and the only modifications I had to make was to lower the action a bit, and replace the strings with Hofner flatwounds. The workmanship on this bass is high quality, and it has that wonderful warm, fat bass sound that Hofner is known for. If you want the Hofner vibe and sound without breaking the bank, this is the bass guitar to get. I also recommend playing with a pick, preferrable a Dunlop Tortex or similar style.

Love this Bass

By BadBoyBob

from Red Hill, PA

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I've been playing bass for 40 years, and this Hofner is such an excellent looking and sounding bass, that I may want to use this as my main bass now. It played well out of the box, but I needed to lower the action a bit, and replaced the round-wound strings with Hofner flat-wounds. It's got many of the great features the expensive version has but for a fraction of the cost, and is a big improvement over the Icon. I highly recommend!

Blew me away!!

By Alex D.

from Granby, Connecticut

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

This bass was amazing!! I bought it with a few pearloid parts and teacup knobs already installed but even without them it would of been awesome. I played it by itself and the sound was a nice warm tone that sounded incredible. I plugged it in and it was even better! One tip though, I found it easier to pick instaed of pluck because of the body shape. The finish was marvolousas well. I just couldn't put it down. If you're looking for a fantastic sound coming from a stunning looking bass get this one!!!

Think twice, or thrice ...

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

Not what you're expecting. Had to send it back. Quality is questionable. Didn't even plug it in. Repacked and returned. Might want to look at a 'knock-off.' I'm sticking with Gibson and Fender.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I got mine for christmas and ever since I played it I couldn't put it down. It has a warm feeling to it and sounds like an upright bass. When you plug it in and start playing you will never let go of this beauty. I have been playing bass for a month now and I may not know a lot yet ,but I know quality when I see it. ...The Soapsuds...

the neck binding

By randy lane

from cincinnati,ohio

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I got mine on 1/12/11 and I must say it was a nice bass the finish is very nice the action was good for what little time i had it ,the sound was pretty good but need to change the strings to flatt wounds i ordered a set of labellas flatt wounds. The problem i found was the binding on both sides of the neck were messed up, it looked like the binding was cut to small for the side of the neck .,and noticed some minor scratches in the finish.the case is nice.I called guitar center.com and as much as i did not want to I sent it back to get another one next day air priority. It is not about what you pay for something it should be the way you want it Guitar Center will have no problem replaceing it.Cant wait to put flat wound strings on the other one, cross your fingers and hope this bass is great.I found another review on American Musical had problems with the binding on the neck as I did.thanks GuitarCenter.your great.

Great Warm Sound but still a chinease mad guitar, dont let the name fool you

By Daniel

from Yorktown Va

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I bought this guitar over christmas and loved it until I started having problems with the input jack. I had to take it to get fixed and it cost $15 but I would not trade this guitar for the world, everyone complements the sound quality, its light on your shoulder and it has awesome looks and its a real attention getter, the only other thing is that the case is really cheap and that this guitar is made in China not Germany

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I traded up from the Ignition model and glad I did. The pickups are much better. Love the sustain from the center block, which also eliminates the neck dive. And the hard case is gorgeous. I had no trouble with the setup, intonation and action was perfect. I made 2 modifications--I put on LaBella Black Nylon Beatle strings and raised the strap button. The button was easily fixed at GC with a few small washers (I couldn't get a decent strap in the space provided). If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars. If you love the Ignition (and I did), you'll really love the CT.
