Overview

A year after celebrating the 50th anniversary of Walter Hofner's original violin bass, made famous by a certain Beatle who shall remain nameless, they have decided to produce a contemporary version. It has a vintage look that will produce many "oohs", and an internal sustain block that creates a more modern, deep-resonating sound that will produce many "aahs." It's the kind of bass guitar people love to see, play, and hear.

Aesthetically, this model features a maple-beech-maple set neck with rosewood fretboard accentuated by mother-of-pearl dot inlays, the signature Hofner violin bass headstock, a brass trapeze tailpiece, and glossy spruce top with glossy flamed maple back and sides. An ebony bridge with movable metal saddles maintains intonation and string spacing. The nickel-plated hardware and floating celluloid pearl pickguard give it an extra little pop for the eyes.

On the electronics side, you're working with two original Hofner 511B 'Staple' humbucking pickups, as well as a control panel with 2 volume controls, 2 on/off switches, and a rhythm/solo switch for volume boost. The overall sound is warm like the original model, but with a little more sonic kick for a more "now" sound. Includes case.

The 500/1 Contemporary Series is a bump up from the Icon B series. This model is made in China like the Icon B, but the wood and electronics are much better. The little bass really has a surprising kick to it. The bass and the treble are very effective on this model and the Bass Solo switch really kick the sound up when needed. The look of the bass is beautiful. So, not only is it great on the ears but on the eyes as well. If you want a quality Hofner without really breaking the bank? Then the H500/1 is the one for you.

I bought the instrument to play in a touring band. It's short scale and I'm small so it worked well for me. The sound is great, sounds upright. It is a terribly unstable instrument due to its hollow body and floating bridge. The intonation is horrible, I wish I could return this instrument, and get my money back.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I traded up from the Ignition model and glad I did. The pickups are much better. Love the sustain from the center block, which also eliminates the neck dive. And the hard case is gorgeous. I had no trouble with the setup, intonation and action was perfect. I made 2 modifications--I put on LaBella Black Nylon Beatle strings and raised the strap button. The button was easily fixed at GC with a few small washers (I couldn't get a decent strap in the space provided). If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars. If you love the Ignition (and I did), you'll really love the CT.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

We purchased this bass for my wife since the 3/4 neck size and small body would make this a perfect practice bass for her. But what happened is that the great sound and feel of this instrument has made it a favorite for both of us. The detail to the bass like the white lacquer edging around the gear head, the mother-of-pearl used for the pick guard, control face plate and the guitar strap peg on the back along with the white ribbing silhouetting the body on both front and back of the body make this instrument stand out. We just changed the strings to La Bella Flat-wound Deep Talkin' Bass strings as other reviewers recommended but the strings that came with the bass were bright and I thought were of good quality - we saved the originals in case we want to go back to them. In changing the strings I found that the floating bridge height adjustment doesn't allow the strings to be lowered any further than on the original setup since the screw wells aren't deep enough - I was going to drill the wells deeper but my wife stopped me for now. Anyways the action is good enough for now without any string buzz. The hard-shell case that came with the bass is of good quality with some plush lining but the guitar probably won't see it much since this instrument is so much fun to play! Our Ampeg BA-115 amp used with the bass pumps out the guitar's fabulous lows and smooth mids and highs. We highly recommend this instrument as either a go-to practice bass, for recording or stage use.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

The bass has a beautiful, mellow tone, and is easy to play, given the guitar-like neck. My only problem is the action, which is quite high. I hope to correct this at a local repair shop.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

The last time I had a Hofner was in 1963. This one is far better then my first. The finish is excellent, no flaws on the guitar. Like everyone else, needs some flat wound strings. The sound is perfect with my new Ampeg mini stack is a perfect combination, and a great sound. This is worth the price for both the guitar and amplifier. occasional

The bass control was a problem.

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

Out of the box I was very impressed with this bass. It is more attractive than the picture advertised. This Hofner handles great and the new sustain feature is different, but cool. This is my fourth Hofner bass. Out of the box I could not get the bass control to operate. I took it to my local Guitar Center and left it to be serviced. I am certain they will resolve the concern. It's so beautiful, I could hang it on the wall and enjoy it as just art. Nope!!!! I'm gonna play it.

      Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series

      By Mark Buvelot

      from Enfield, CT

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I have wanted this bass for a few years. After getting it, I found the Hofner to be a gem. The warm tone and action are most appealing to me. It is lightweight and easy to adapt to. It is a beautiful instrument and I am very happy with the purchase. The only downfall is the case that comes with it. The cheap cardboard has warped within a week and the latches do not close. Good thing for the middle locking latch. I have wrapped Velcro around both ends of the case. Will buy a better case. I believe the case is only used to protect the bass for shipping.

Great Warm Sound but still a chinease mad guitar, dont let the name fool you

Comments about Hofner H500/1-CT Contemporary Series Violin Bass Guitar:

I bought this guitar over christmas and loved it until I started having problems with the input jack. I had to take it to get fixed and it cost $15 but I would not trade this guitar for the world, everyone complements the sound quality, its light on your shoulder and it has awesome looks and its a real attention getter, the only other thing is that the case is really cheap and that this guitar is made in China not Germany

I got mine for christmas and ever since I played it I couldn't put it down. It has a warm feeling to it and sounds like an upright bass. When you plug it in and start playing you will never let go of this beauty. I have been playing bass for a month now and I may not know a lot yet ,but I know quality when I see it. ...The Soapsuds...
