I am a new bassist and have two 4 stringers. I am starting my lessons with chords then scales and begining music theory. My brain and fingers have more than enough to deal with using only 4 strings. BUT I love metal. I really don't want to buy a 5 string until I am actually able to play well enough to be limited by the lack of that extra sting. In comes the hip shot. Now I have one of my basses set up in drop D and C, while the other I can leave in standard tuning. No more wasting time constantly tuning based on what songs i'm learning or what I feel like jamming. The only reason i don't give it 5 is the tuning could be a big more solid. Even following the tips and instructions you still have to make adjustments more so that with out it. also the clearance wasn't there. when the lever is extended it cannot open fully on my Ibanez. Might not be a problem with other brands but Ibanez has the angled tuners and it does hit. It still works but maybe they could address that and place the set screw hole in a different spot. It didn't prevent me from the tuning I desired but it may for others.
The product itself is great, and highly recommended. It was easy to install into my Schecter Raiden 4-string. The package contains all necessary parts, with the exception of the recommended lithium grease for lubrication of the lever. The instructions are easy to follow, and the string stays in tune in both the E and D positions, even with multiple switches. My ordering/shipping experience, however, was pretty glitchy. Apparently there was an error at the warehouse where my Hipshot was shipped through USPS, but I was given a UPS tracking number. Thus, I was never able to track the shipment, and calling the customer service number yielded no results, because this error made the order invisible in the system. Luckily, it did arrive on time. I suggest using the store-pick-up option when ordering from GC.com, to avoid this hiccup in the future.
I bought this on a whim, and I am so happy with it. I did have to modify my headstock slightly (I filled a screw hole and drilled a new one), but don't let that discourage you from buying the extender. On my Ibanez GSR200, I DID have a little contact with this extender and another one of the tuners, but it was very easy to dremel off the corner without doing any serious damage. This works GREAT. It stays in tune, and is easy to install and use. The only reason it gets 4 stars is because you might have to do a little modifications to your bass, but it really isn't that hard to do. It should also be noted that the tuning post on this is slightly shorter than the rest of my tuning posts. Again, this is hardly major. It still works great!
This is a must have for any four string bass player. Way better than either manually de-tuning the E, or having to switch out with another bass (that is already de-tuned) each time a song comes up in D or Eb. My Sandberg four string already have some Gotoh tuners with gold finish. This de-tuner matched perfectly. From the front you can't even tell that that the E string tuner has some extra hardware. And it works perfectly! I should have bought/installed this a long time ago!
Mine just came in and I love it!!! I play in D most of the time, but when I wanna soften up or do a cover in standard, I have to stop what I'm doing and tune back up. This thing is very handy-dany when it come to defeating having to stop and tune up and back down. I have the black one on a Epi. Les Paul Special bass. Although it cuts off about 1/3 of the string post, if you only wrap it twice, you're good. Over-wrapping messes up the drop capability anyways from the reviews I've read. So, after the ranting, this is worth your money! It's an amazing product! If you drop tune your bass and sometimes do standars or vice-versa, buy this!!!
