Vocal mic with exceptionally low handling noise for professional applications.

The HEIL PR 22 UT (Utility) is the award-winning dynamic PR 20 microphone. To help reduce the cost Heil pared down the packaging options. Specifications and performance characteristics remain at the high level that the PR 20 brings, wide frequency range, the ability to handle +140dB SPL and -35dB of rear rejection that makes the PR 20 and PR 22 UT the answer for a wide range of professional applications. No cutting corners on the microphone here-open a PR 22 UT and you are getting a PR 20.

The PR 22 UT has been designed for recording, live sound reinforcement. And commercial broadcast applications. This is a very rugged microphone, making it ideal for professional use where exceptionally low handling noise is needed.

The PR 22 UT achieves its exceptional performance by using a special magnet structure and a large aluminum 1-1/8" low-mass voice coil assembly. A very unique internal sorbothane suspension system has been designed to reduce undesirable handling noise. Special attention has been paid to the phasing plug assembly with equally placed ports that sense audio from behind the source entering them out of phase. This produces a very linear cardioid pattern and reduces the proximity effect while achieving the extreme articulation across its smooth 50Hz-18kHz frequency response.

This new Heil element is usable in extreme high sound pressure levels and is immune to overload conditions making it perfect for vocals. It produces a beautifully smooth audio response without the inconvenience of phantom or outside DC powering. This is one great live vocal microphone that has finally replaced the "ball mic" of the 1970s.

All Heil PR 22 UT microphones come in a leatherette carrying bag with mic clip, one stainless mesh grill, and an acoustical foam windscreen.

Bob Heil explains the difference:
Heil Sound's president and founder Bob Heil explains, "The PR 20 is shipped standard with an abundance of accessories which includes interchangeable gold, silver, and black screw-on grill screens, plus a plush padded carrying case. While many customers appreciate and use these items, there is a large group of musicians, sound companies and contractors who need a simple 'one-take' PR 20. By streamlining the packaging, we can dramatically lower the price without one single alteration to the microphone itself. Think of the PR 20 UT as a PR 20 without the 'bling'!"

  • Love it! Love it! Love it!

I have never liked the sound of my own voice. To me, it has always sounded muddy and nasally. As a result, I have always felt very intimidated by the prospect of singing in our band. Fortunately, I was happy to be one of the backing musicians anyway. And we always used those industry standard 57s and 58s. I heard good things about this mic and so, I thought why not? Guitar Center offered me 30 days. So, I've used this mic for some six months now and I'm not giving it up. At first, the differences between this and the standards didn't seem really super noticeable. We don't have a piano player so, when we decided to play some piano songs, I quickly jumped off the guitar and started learning the piano. The next step was that I learned songs that I knew the words to and the other band members said that I should go ahead and sing the leads on those numbers. This mic has honestly made this possible because when I hear MY voice in the monitor, it actually sounds good to me. It is very confidence inspiring. I asked the other guys if this is actually what my voice sounded like to them and they all said "Absolutely!" Seriously, I give the credit to this mic and suddenly I'm enjoying an entirely new avenue of musical expression for me.

  • Sweet Mic.

I have been using SM58's and 835's for years. I was content with those mics but I have recently acquired one of these and WOW! I love how it cuts through the mix. The others seem to be a little rounded on the bottom end but this one is really natural to me. Just love it and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks!

  • Unbelievable.

As reviewed by JASON on 7/9/2014

I'd read good things about the Heil microphones online, but this is something you have to hear to believe. This mic is simply the best live microphone I have ever heard. Period. Try this mic if you get a chance. I ran this mic through a roland keyboard amp for a rehearsal, and it sounded so clear I couldn't believe it. We ended up recording live room sound during the rehearsal, and the vocals were so much clearer than we expected - even better than the vocals captured by the two overhead condenser mics we had set up. I've tried a bunch of different dynamic mics over the years - Shure 58, beta 58, 57, various Sennheisers, Audix OM-2, EV ND-767. The Heil PR 22 is, to my ears and for my voice, head and shoulders above the rest. The Heil is super quiet, except for the sounds that you want to come through the mic. The sound quality from this mic is very clear, and the frequency response is great: no honking nasal sounding low mids! The best way I can describe it is that the sound I hear coming from the speakers is like the sound inside my skull. I use a Shure SM7B through a 1073 clone preamp to record vocals in the studio, and I am very happy with the sound I get from that mic and preamp combination. With the PR 22, I just might have a new favorite studio mic, it's that good.
