  • Simplistic, and that's a good thing!

As reviewed by Todd Perkins on 1/3/2013

Simple is always better in my opinion, and Hartke embraced that philosophy with the LH-1000 and its little brother, the LH-500. They're great for folks like me who like to keep it simple and let the natural sound of their bass shine. Where other amps have a built-in 7-band EQ, compressor, overdrive, etc., this one has just three tone control knobs for when (if) you need your sound to cut through a noisy room - customizing your sound is wisely left up to your choice in effects pedals. The LH-1000 is LOUD (as a 1000-watt amp should be), but not overbearlingly so, and I found that solo practicing can be had with the volume at 2 or 3 through a Hydrive 4x10. Cranking it up to 8 or so begins to produce a nice growl, and 9 and above, in my opinion should only be used as a last resort. Four speaker outputs in the back ensures you can keep adding to the LH-1000 as your gigs get bigger, and the crossover feature lets you split frequencies between a 4x10 and a 1x15 nicely. Would I recommend it? Definitely. Is it for everyone? It depends on how much you rely on your effects. I was happy to find that I could plug in directly, leave the EQ flat, turn off the limiter, and still get a wonderful sound that I could apply just about anywhere.

  • I've been searching for along time, and finally found it..

As reviewed by Randy Martinez on 9/11/2013

Well, The bands I have played with were always "loud and proud" And so quickly i realized I didn't really need some amazing, warm, tube tone, I needed low end and volume.. Beings that this amp only has 5 knobs, it didn't take me long to dial in my tone. I can finally FEEL all the notes i play all the way up to the g string. I have them paired with a couple of 15" hydrives, and i think i finally found a rig that can fill all the venues i play. I've always had trouble being able to hear myself, especially in small venues where i'm closer to the drums and they are just super loud. The one thing i did notice, is it takes a little longer to warm up and kick on then some of my other amps i have had. But, give it about 30 seconds or so and it is ready to get loud. Really simple to use. I look forward to getting another one and expanding my rig.

  • The best quality sound of all of them

As reviewed by john adham on 8/28/2013

To begin with, I like a very clean bass sound that is beefy. In the last 8 months I have bought tested and returned Markbass, Ampeg, Peavey, Genz-Benz, Ampeg SVT + 6x10 cabinets, and Gallen Krugar. Enough to pull your hair out. Either the sound has had distortion, speakers blew or just not a good clean beefy sound. Then I tested the Hartke LH500. It sounded perfect! Also you can crank it up and won't lose its tonal quality, and I haven't blown the speaker. I run mine through a Hydrive 15" cabinet which is as clean as any 8" speaker. I used to love Ampeg until I kept blowing speakers and finding out their shoddy workmanship is made in China. One thing Hartke needs to do is take care of the weight problem. This amp weighs 40 lbs. Another great thing about the LH500/1000 is not a lot of knobs or gain/master volumes. Just one volume knob plus low, mid, high. When playing live, simple is best.
