I bought two of these subs and have been waiting to write a review, so here it goes: When I first got them I was told that my qsc rmx1450 would be enough to power them. However this is not the case, these are 8ohms 400rms so as previously stated in another review they need 600-800 watts rms. I bought a crown xls802d thinking this would help my problem, the subs sounded good, but not any better or louder than my rmx1450. i figured I would return the crown and get a crossover. I got the behringer cx2310, tuned it, and the subs sounded as good as some JBL M-Pros. I was too busy tuning the crossover to notice i was clipping my amp. So the next thing you know i blew my amp. Fast forward some more and i bought a qsc plx 3402, bridged and about 60% turned up with a crossover these subs BUMP! I finally get that sound I have been looking for. Long story short, make sure to get adequate power and a crossover to get that room rumbling bass. Even at a low cost, use the money you save for a crossover and a powerful amp, you wont be disappointed.

I was pleased with the sound. This harbinger has a deep, powerful bass response. I was a bit dissapointed with the amount of bass and the the fact that it did not carry for much distance. This problem might be corrected by using two subs instead of only one. After a while, I had probems with the cabinet rattling. After correcting this problem, the very next time I used it, the voice coil fried. I had the sub connected to the lowest power amp crown makes and the sub could not take it. If you want to buy this sub, make sure you buy two and don't push them too hard the sound is ok though.

Good for the money

By Daniel

from Moline, IL

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

These subs are a good buy for the money. Just remember that they are rated at 400w rms @ 8 ohms so they need to be driven with an amp that can deliver 400-800 watts into 8 ohms. The crown xls802 can do that, the xls202 (the "cheapest amp that crown makes") does not and will fry your voice coils if you clip your amplifier. Set up your system correctly and these subs will work very well for you.

Good quality for a Great price.

By DJ Deez

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

My system consists of two HX 152's and two HX 118's. The 118s are powered by one Crown XLS 802. I have had these for 8 months now without any problems. They work great and provide good crisp sound. However, if you are looking for serious amounts of bass (night clubs, etc.)you are going to need a little more than two 118s will provide. However, as i said above, these speakers have served me well for gigs of upwards of 600 people.

Best for the Price

By Bill

from Hillsborough, NJ

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I went to GC to check out some subs, I heard these next to peavy's and JBL's, the HX118S was louder and had better range. I've had them about six months now, I've used them for indoor and outdoor parties. I do a lot of house and college gigs, I definitely use my equipment to its full potential. After breaking in these subs I played some Bass Mechanics at pretty much full volume before a gig to make sure they wouldn't fail, and to see how they really sound. I was pretty amazed at the frequency response, and the output level, these things go low. I played some Victor Wooten bass solos through them to test tone accuracy and again I was very impressed. My only complaint is the carpeting on one of mine isn't glued down, it seems to just be clamped by the hardware, other than that you won't find better subs in the same price range. Awesome product.

Absolute best Sub for the money

By TobiasPlayer01

from Ohio

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

Don't be fooled by those who power anything with cheap amps. You can blow the best speakers with the wrong amount of power. I started with the QSC 1450 bridged mono and I have good clean power. These subs perform very well and I couldn't be happier with how much they've improved our band's sound. I also use the Harbinger HX152 mains powered by QSC 1450's and run it all with the dbx DriveRack PA. This is a great setup for a reasonable cost.

Best single 18" subs I've used.

By George

from Seattle, WA.

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I run a pair of these with my Samson sx2800 power amp which gives me 700W RMS per side into 8ohms. As with any speaker system it is vitally important to use an amp with a RMS power rating 50% to 100% more than the speaker's RMS rating to avoid damage to the amp as well as the speakers. I use a high pass filter to remove everything below 40hz and set my crossover at 120hz. My dual 15' EV Eliminator IIs handle everything above that. With my set-up these are by far the best subs I've used and they aren't particularly power hungry for having such a large magnet and voice coil. The kick drum is now capable of causing nervous system disruption causing people to dance against their will. OK, maybe they're just having seizures. Hard to tell with white guys. Hehe These are great! Buy them! Use a big amp with plenty of extra power.

Best in price range

By 2 BIG 2 SPANK band

from Edmonds, WA

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I've been using a pair of these in my system for over a year now. No problems except loose carpeting, not glued down correctly. I chose them over similar JBL's - Peavey's. Better sound for less money. I power mine with a QSC GX5 amp. No problems at all, and plenty of thunder.

A proper setup yeilds proper results

By GOT2B RU!

from Va Beach, VA

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

If your amp doesn't have enough headroom, clipping will destroy your speakers. I initially ran 2 HX118s with a Crown PSA-2 and got decent results once I backed off the power to avoid the clipping. 275 watts @ 8 ohms per side is not enough. I am currently running a Carvin TCS TA2240 with 650W @ 8ohms per side and BOOM!!!

Big Bang 4 the Buck

By DJ Nate the Great

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

Purchased a set of these over a year ago to give more thump with my JBL eon's. I was a little worried until my first gig with the Harbinger subs (powered by crown xti4000) they had so much Big Bang in the bottom it was scary. Two problem the woofer pounded so hard it shook the screws loose (tighten those with better screws-ok) Second, can you guys do something with the carpet love the sub hate the carpet. About to purchase the powered set. Can't beat the price.

Big Bang for the Buck

By DJ Frank

from Pittsburgh, PA

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

Bought the first set used at GC and am going back for more new ones. They hit hard and clean for an inexpensive sub. I am old school and use high current (aka, heavy) amps. Don't underpower them like the morons that have posted negative remarks about frying amps or voice coils. I drive them with an amp rated (RMS) at 4X their RMS rating and haven't hurt them yet--and I know I've pushed them hard. Just don't clip anything and you won't break anything...

they need a lot of power.

By mDJ

from SD California

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

fist, if your looking at these cuz of the price, let me tell you... use the rest of the money on a big amp. you'll need it. these subs will fry the voice coil if you underpower them. i currently use the qsc rmx 4050, 800 watts per chanel at 8ohms. you can run 4 of these babies at 1400 watts @ 4 ohms. they are great, good frequency range and responce. great for live sound small to midsize events (approx. 1000 people). the 400 watt rating is an understatement. these subs will run great with power of ~750 to ~900 watt power. the bigger the headroom the better, as djs and pro audio people know... always keep a 400 watt plus headroom in your amps so as to avoid any problems with your gear. this sub will definatelly need the headroom.

Great Sub

By DJ Doctor T

from State Road, NC

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I'm a mobile DJ. I was looking for something that would be tough and have a great sound. I stopped by the store and did some comparisons. Harbinger sold me. I have used it for over a year with no problems and I power it with a Behringer EP1500 bridged. I was in the middle of ordering another one when I decided to leave feedback.

To Iraq and back

By Big Worm

from Detroit, mi

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I brought a pair of them with me on my deployment, along with a pair of Peavey BWX SP 2x, (2) QSC 3402 amps. I cross the subs off one amp bridged and ran the Peaveys full off the other amp. The bass was incredible, and the sound quality produced was well worth the price. I ran them hard and long, they continued to preform under extreme conditions. I now have 4 and play clubs back in the states, I just love when the bartenders ask me to turn down the base cause the taps keep opening, and how many bottles fell. With the right set-up they are a good road quality speaker for the beginner.

Very happy with 4!

By Hazy Meadow

from Denver Colorado

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I have 4 of these and run them off of a Crown XLS 2500, that turns out to about 390 watts per sub and I must say they hit rather hard. I could run them in many other configurations and I will try running 2 of them with a Crown XLS 1000 bridged which would be 550 watts per sub. I think the Crown XLS 1500 would be the max at 775 watts per sub and you would not want to turn that all the way up for sure. I am very happy with these and I will buy 2 more for a grand total of 6. I also run a Cerwin Vega Earthquake EL-36C. it seems to supply any missing low notes :)

Awesome Sub

By BRYAN LOCKWOOD

from Louisiana

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I was a little skeptical at first about buying this sub. The price point was a little low for what I would usually get. I went to a local Guitar Center, listened to it, and was blown away by the sound. This sub is tight and not that muddy and has great definition and low end punch for the price point. I use it with EV ELX215's and it complements them very well. I will be picking up 3 more to add to my arsenal the beginning of next year. This sub is comparable to the EV ELX118 or the JBL MRX line at almost half the price. Great job Harbinger.

Heavy Hitter

By PHILIP

from Mass

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I bought this a year or so ago and wanted to put it thru a few different applications before commenting. Just got to use it outside with 3 bands. People were asking where my other sub was, told them only had this one. It surprised everybody and paired well with my EV ZLX15s. I power it with a crown XLS202 bridged thru an X32 Board and the only complaint I have is the weight (96lbs)I went looking for lighter replacement @ GC and looked at the QSC Ksub and the EV ELX-18. The EV came close but the QSC did not hit like the Harbinger. (In fairness to QSC and EV, I have not seen many Guitar Centers with their subs or speakers hooked up correctly so it would be a fair test. Also put a door on the room so we can test it the way it was meant to sound, not like a dim stereo in the background)
