      Comments about Hammond Sk1 Organ:

I bought the SK1 for my kids for Christmas. I wanted them to know the great sound of the Hammond. I may not be an organist (yet) but I am an embedded computer engineer and can smell digital junk very quickly.

I am impressed with the configurability of the tone, starting with the organ type, adding the draw bar tones, percussion effects, Leslie effects and then sending it all through an equalizer. You can shape the tone in every dimension imaginable via a menuing system that is less than perfect but you're after the tone in the end so you kinda get used to it. Also the ability to add a lower manual, pedals, and a real Leslie makes it very easy to upgrade.

I have to bust Suzuki for the lame, crummy, El-cheapo flat square buttons they used for some of the options and effects on the console. They don't even sit flat and feel like they belong on a cheap disposable kid's toy and give the whole unit (other than the keyboard and sound) a very cheap feel. If I had seen this in a showroom and compared it to other keyboards based on aesthetics a good sales guy could've persuaded me to buy a Roland. However, I was after the sound and I think Suzuki knew that when they decided to cut 15cents off the cost of each button.

That said, the portability is incredible, you can't take a B3 with you in an RV, set it on your lap with headphones on and play for hours! The 61 key model real is a take anywhere, play anywhere keyboard.

Looking forward to hooking up a real Leslie. Now all I need is a poster of Jimmy Smith to pin above it!

It needs a hook up for my Leslie 122 speaker cab.
Not a 8 pin jack I have never seen before
Maybe a adapter for 8 pin to 6 pin not to 1/4 in. Plug

This is just to follow up on my previous review a couple of years ago. I think I've discovered a suited speaker for the SK1, these are the Champ 600's. I have been using them for a couple of months now and they are incredible.

Fun to play a real Hammond. Not vintage in any way but authentic in most audible ways and as close as it gets in feel and playability.

The REAL DEAL! This is the authentic B-3 sound and it only weighs in at 15.5 lbs (not 400 lbs / not including the flight case!)
Finally the authentic Hammond vibe in a portable package. It has very usable extra voices to complement your rig. I use it on top of my Kawai MP-6 and they complement each other nicely!

Hammond Sk1 the 15 LB Beast

          By Bob Baskey

          from Boardman Ohio

          Comments about Hammond Sk1 Organ:

Background- had a B3 (copied a trek II portable cabinet) and Leslie 145 ( w/4 ohm JBL - atlas 60 watt driver w/ 200 watts on top of it, it really jammed. Sold it because band buddies got tired of carrying it. Bought other keys and modules.Later bought a voce v3 on e-bay to add to keys, sounded great. Almost bought the hammond xk3, so watched the Sk1 for a year. Bought it on Tues and rec'd it on the 28th a Friday. That Sunday at rehearsel for the following Friday, with another band, the guys kept laughing that when they closed there eyes they imagined a 400 LB Hammond sitting there. The thing just kicks butt, especially when I cranked the overdrive. I hate spongy keys and I liked the feel of my DX7. The sk's keys are just alittle more resistent, didn't take any time to get used to it. Look on youtube and check out Jim Alfredson and his sk2-- you'll see dead on. I like the other extra voices, but In my opinion I like some better real sounding strings. Only took this keyboard to the job, that's all. No 3 other keyboards and 2 sound modules, for once setup and toredown before the drummer.kept on going in thinking I left something behind at the end of the night. Oh yea the built in MP3 player is also cool. Demoed the keyboard for a bunch of people during break and played along with "the Sky is Crying " Steve Ray Vaughn. I transposed original key of E to me playing in F, what a lazy cheat I've become. Thanks Jim Alfredson for all your help, this keyboard or I should say Hammond really is a modern Hammond B3 in my book at only 15 Lbs too. Bob B

love it but not out of the box

          By Dennis Wieand

          from Bethlehem, Pa

          Comments about Hammond Sk1 Organ:

I tried one of these about a year and a half ago, thinking it might be good for small gigs. I went to a GC and tried it for an hour, they had no volume pedal hooked up, and it just didn't "have it" so I dismissed it. Well, a year later, I'm doing more small venues, there's not room for the korg cx3 and wurly, let alone the leslie, so I start doing research again, thinking I'm leaning toward a nord. But I need EP and organ at the same time, so I start looking at the SK again. I find one local, call and ask the salesman if I can bring in my vent and a volume pedal. I tell him I'm going to need at least an hour with it, if I like it I buy it there, no shopping around. The kid is very helpful, helps me hook everything up, and leaves me in peace to play the thing. Five minutes later, I go and find him, tell him to pack it up, it's going home with me. The plan was to use it and the vent on small gigs alone, and use the korg and leslie for organ and it for EP's, etc. on the bigger jobs where I had room. After spending a week tweaking they came out with the software update where you can set up your own tonewheel generator. I spent a night matching my real hammond in the studio through a leslie, and another night matching the real hammond through the vent, and since then this and the vent goes out with me on every gig no matter how big or small. Rhodes is great, the organ absolutely screams one minute, and gets that mellow 838000000 sound the next. Wurly is usable, but not near as realistic as the rhodes (I have one of each of the real thing, plus 3 hammonds in the studio so I am familiar with what the real thing is). The interface is a little different than a B3, which worried me at first (that was the reason I went with the CX3), but I'm as at home now with it as I am the Korg. I'm doing mostly blues and Funky type jazz, with a bass player, and am doing OK without 2 manuals, but sometimes wish I went with the SK2 (until I setup and tear down!). But as far as sound and playability goes, I love this thing! I still don't know what happened the first time I tried it, but with the vent (the internal sim has the rotary down, but the distortion is lacking) and a lot of time tweaking it I am totally satisfied with my setup. ALso, I had a minor problem with it, where it went down on a monday, and I had a major set of weekend gigs coming up, and hammond USA bent over backwards and I was up and running that wednesday afternoon, free of charge, so I'm also totally sold on their customer service.
