GREAT FOR BEGINNERS!

By ROGER C SMITH

from Lancaster, PA

Comments about Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 (CD and Book):

Among other things, I give Beginner's Guitar Lessons. I looked at a lot of books for Beginner's to start out with, and I chose this one as a test to see how well a student would be prone to commit to practicing with it every day. It was a good choice! The book is well thought out in the presentation of it's content. It gives the proper amount of information, and allows practice time, for each string, chord, etc., before moving on. Let's face it....the first time guitar player is eager to get right to the most current Hit Songs. That's all well and good, but all too often, the time a Beginner takes to actually learn the strings, notes, read music, and basically know what the He or She is doing, falls by the wayside. The truth is, when first picking up the Guitar, a student can get bored with books and lessons, and can end up fumbling around the Fretboard for a long time. I feel a "good" instructor should be able to balance "The Book", Lessons, and Practice Time, while STILL encouraging a student's Figuring Out Current Hits, Using Their Creativity, and Freestyle Time. A Successful Instructor Needs To Keep A Student's Interest In Learning. This Book Has Proved To Be A Great Tool To Help With That!

Good Book, But a little slow paced...

By Aprildawn

from Everett, WA

Comments about Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 (CD and Book):

I got this book at the same time I got my guitar as it covered reading actual music rather than focusing on tabs. While I do rate this 5 stars, there are downsides. I happen to have prior experience with music including 1 year of piano and six years of Alto/Bari Saxophone so getting through this book is a tad bit tedious due to the fact that it is getting down and dirty into the basics. I feel that they introduce certain things at rather inappropriate times. For instance, you get through nearly half the book before you see a single rest or even an eighth note. Though that just may be me being a little picky. I am happy that Ode to Joy is one of the first songs to play, even if the version of it is more basic than my brain can stand to play.

Fantastic for beginners

By Tim Scott

from Riverside, RI

Comments about Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 (CD and Book):

Before buying this book I had "zero" experience playing any instrument. I decided one day I wanted to learn, went and picked up a guitar and was recommended this book. The songs might not be "fun", but this book is extremely effective at teaching you from the ground up. In one week, practicing about 45 minutes a day, I mastered the first two lessons (first two strings). If you put the effort in, this book will turn you around from a fumbling idiot to someone who sounds like they have some basic guitar skills very quickly. Highly recommended, and will be a book I pass on to anyone looking to try guitar.

Great for beginner who can or wants to read music

By Matt K.

from Fredericksburg, VA

Comments about Hal Leonard Guitar Method Book 1 (CD and Book):

I took lessons as a teen and dropped out because it was more work than fun. The Mel Bay Method involved too many exercises that were not actual songs. Boring! At 41 I started self-teaching and found that the HL method turns the work into fun, and I enjoy playing. It starts out very basic, 1 string at a time, so you learn to read music and translate into fretting and picking. By the second string, you are playing little tunes, and then real songs by string 3. The CD makes practicing much better, and is an absolute must if you are not also taking lessons from a teacher. HL also has a beginner's DVD which is good but not as great as the Book and CD.
