Not worth the money

By Cody Starr

from TX

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

I received Learn and Master Guitar as a Christmas gift and I've been very disappointed thus far. I've only watched the first 5 DVDs and while the video quality and instructor are nice, this is NOT worth the hefty price tag. In my opinion there are far superior FREE guitar courses online. The Gibson course starts in the weeds IMHO by starts teaching you the names of the notes on the first 3 frets for each string. It also throws some basic music theory (music notation for reading music). While none of this is hard it's boring and really isn't necessary to get somebody started playing guitar. The exercises are boring (Dear Gibson, I didn't pick up a guitar to learn Yankee Doodle, Ode to Joy, or When the Saints Go Marching In, sorry). You don't even get into lessons on basic open chords until 9 weeks into the course (Session 5) which is unfortunate. Had I started with this DVD set I would have quit from boredom. Then when they do start talking open chords they proceed to barf practically every open chord at you at once as if to say, "here you go, memorize these fingerings and you'll be good". I haven't seen any discussion about strategies to teach students how to change chords quickly which is one of, if not the biggest challenge for beginners. Contrast that with some of the popular guitar teachers online who do a better job of getting you playing some real tunes as fast as possible (Stage 1 in one of the best courses I found online teaches you D, A, and E chords which you can find in tons of popular songs). To me doing something fun with the guitar in the early stages is key to having people stick with it. For example with one of the online programs I learned some Bob Marley (Three Little Birds) and Elvis (Hound Dog) right off the bat! Obviously I'm going out of my way here to not mention names of those guys online who teach for free but I just found that Gibson missed the mark here.

Well worth the money

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

Considering you get a step by step instruction book. Starts you out from the beginning, even if you never held a guitar, and finish to put you as far as you want to go with it. 10 DVD videos with him showing and for you to play along with him in three different speeds. 5 CD jam along songs to practice along with. That's less than $10.00 per disk alone. Plus you can also download a Bonus Book in PDF format that helps you as you go through the lesson book that you get in this package. Free online blogging that is helps you grow with other students at your level that will help you through your week spots in learning. Steve is on there as well. Learn about different types of guitars, pick, strings, and amps etc. and other peoples experiences. Also watch him (Steve Krenz) live on "Ustream" every Tuesday on pointers in different playing styles and answer on spot questions if your log on. If you miss a show, recording is still there for later viewing. He invites special guest on some shows. Also has E-mail support. As you progress through each lesson, he will send you an e-mail to help you stay encourage and good tip to help you progress at your level. This program will teach you different styles such as Lead, various strumming, hard/soft rock, country, gospel, rockabilly. Oh ya, he also covers some pentatonic scales which covers the neck of the guitar and not just the first 4 frets like many other programs. I had this program just over a year. No regrets. For the price... YOU GET A LOT. I learned more from this than any other resource and learning programs. I've always gotten discouraged in myself playing a guitar, just over a year with this program I am still encouraged.

Steve Krenz is Awsome!!!

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

I got this on christmas day and iv'e gotta say it rocks! I've only been using it for 2 months and I'm on barre chords already (but i did kinda hurry through the begining where he goes through notes). But on chords I'm 10 times better than i was 2 months ago when all i was learning from was rocksmith. I'm going back over the begining discs cause once you get to barre chords he goes into scales and if you didn't memorize the notes and how to read music its like wat the heck??? As for Steve Krenz i dont think hes boring he's a very good teacher and I'd recomend this course to anyone.

Great so far

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

So far I really enjoy re learning the basics and learning some new tecniques. the teacher is fairly boring but very effective and easy to understand. the real complaint i have is how much they try and sell you bonus workshops with it. i mean if it would really improve the lesson course then inculde it with the main course.other than that this is a great course to correct miss taught tecniques and great for novice and advanced players.

I'm finally learning...as in REALLY learning

By John Mabasa

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

By no means is this a "Magic" course. I've been playing for 18 years but my skills hit a roadblock after the first two years because I simply never took the time to learn the fundamentals. I assumed I would breeze through the first few discs but I found myself stuck on the second one. Not because I can't play the stuff he makes you play, but because I never learned how to read music. In order for this product to be effective for you, you have to be honest with yourself and take no shortcuts. Don't move to the next session just because you were able to "stumble through" the exercises. The course expects you to master each session before moving on to the next. The instructor (Steve Krenz) evolves after each session to fit the skill level of the audience of each session. He talks to you like a kindergarten teacher in session one, and demands a lot more of you in the later sessions. Being a self-taught guy, I pretty much found myself in a dead end in terms of trying to improve my skills. This course has pretty much opened up a new road for me on how to make myself a better guitar player. I bought the "Bonus Workshops" set and I DO NOT recommend buying it. The publisher has made the workbook for the bonus exercises available for download. And all the Bonus Workshop DVDs do is go through those other exercises with you. I suggest you download the workbook first (info for that comes in the package) and see first, if you really need someone to walk you through those bonus exercises.

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

Comes with a book, DVD with backing tracks for each session and fancy packaging. The instructor is a great guitarist but not of much use as an instructor. Personally I don't need someone to follow along with. I just need an instructor. The lesson book by itself would be much cheaper and is barely adequate at that. The only reason I can see why anyone would give this course good reviews based on the price is because they like Kool-Aid or have a vested interest to do so.

Been playing @ the guitar since I was a teen. Now almost 60 and I've never had a formal lesson. Also have been playing in the Praise band @ my church for two years. Now I feel I can get some real training on my own time & at a reasonable cost.

      Excellent Course-Courses

Comments about Hal Leonard Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar Boxed DVD/CD Set Legacy Of Learning Series:

I first bought the Learn & Master Fingerstyle course, and I like the quality of teaching. Then I ordered The Learn & Master Guitar. It is a great way to learn not only how to play the guitar, but it will also make you a good teacher. I also purchased the Bonus package. It has is more lessons to practice, and practice is the main element to learn how to play well. I highly recommend these guitar courses. Juan Lara
