Hal Leonard was originally founded as a dance band by brothers Hal Edstrom and Everett "Leonard" Edstrom alongside fellow musician Roger Busdicker. Because of their experience performing popular music, the company quickly stood out for their arrangements of hit songs to be performed by school bands. In order to capitalize on this unique skillset, Hal Leonard knew they needed to get proper licencing for their arrangements. With this in mind the boys traveled to New York City's legendary Tin Pan Alley and set the ground work for their publishing business.
