Overview

The Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar covers all genres from blues/rock to jazz/fusion and back again. With an arched, flamed maple body, its looks are as sweet as its tone. Two Hagstrom humbuckers, combined with the resonant semi-hollow body, provide plenty of power. And no Hagstrom is complete without their famous, fast-playing neck. The Viking has the patented H-Expander truss rod which provides tension at either end and runs the entire length of the neck. The rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for very low action and a thin set maple neck.

Another Hagstrom exclusive, the resinator fretboard is an extraordinary, homogeneous wood composite that maintains a strong fundamental harmonic and eliminates wolf tones. It offers the articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability. Silky smooth, reliable, and fast.

The self-lubricating graphite composite nut is much harder than bone or plastic resulting in more string vibration through the neck. Tuning is also improved and string binding is eliminated by self-lubrication.

A long travel tune-o-matic-style bridge and trapeze tailpiece further increase tone, sustain, and intonation quality. 18:1 gear ratio machine heads ensure fully accurate tuning.

The Viking's high-grade polyester finish is hard, smooth, and more dense than polyurethane, so its guaranteed to look great and provide excellent protection and sonic performance. Case sold separately.

As an active musician needing to cover a wide range of tones and styles I was looking for a versatile guitar. Coming from the jazz scene I also wanted to get a darker rounder tone. I did extensive research and played a number of guitars. The Hagstrom Viking Deluxe could not be a better fit for my needs and tone preferences. I played a number of nice Gibson 335's other semi-hollowbodies models and came back to the Viking because for what you pay, you get a real similar guitar for a fraction of the price. Nothing in it's price range comes close. Plus it's a head turner. You don't see many Hagstroms out there. Players come up and have to check it out.

Ive had this guitar for about two years and, as my second electric, it is pretty fine. It looks gorgeous and didn't break the bank like a high end semi hollow would do. The pickups are as hot as can be and i could hardly believe the amount of rich, beautiful tone that they are capable of producing. However, upon looking into the instrument, i was a little disappointed. A ton of cables and electronics that had glue on them were floating around freely and the inside was stained with glue smudges and marks. Lastly, the thing never stay in tune. I have worked on the nut, oiled it tried more strings than i care to remember, and even replaced the tuners with $80 custom Kluson tuners. Through all this, the third string and occasionally others go out of tune before i play for even five minutes. Having said all of this and read all the reviews, maybe mine is just a dud or one that a worker practiced on or something. I hope this review was helpful!

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Lets be serious...for the money you most likely can't find a better semi-solid instrument. I have 4 Hagstroms and all have come - out of the box - needing very little set up to play well. My Deluxe Viking is the red burst and looks awesome. the finish equals almost any USA made instrument. Most of the Chinese guitars need serious fret leveling and crowning and electronics need to be replaced (including some of the Epiphones I've played). I can say that pickups and general electronics have been great for these Hag's. The Super's have coil tap which is a really nice feature. I read some of the other reviews and will have to say that I've never had a bad fret job on any that I've owned. I have almost everything from Fender to Gibson to Ibanez, etc. and I really like these Hagstroms. I play mine on the stage and for serious practice. For the money you get great looks, sound and play-a-bility and you won't fear taking it out of the case and playing it on stage.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I was looking for a nice semi-hollow body with humbuckers & liked the uniqueness of the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe. Guitar Center didn't have one in stock so I had to order mine. When it arrived I did play it in the store before accepting it. The craftsmanship & finish of this guitar is beautiful & the thin neck is fast. I didn't strap it on until I got home. My disappointment lies in how nose heavy this guitar is and the lack of response in the tone pots. Tone pots can be replaced, so that's not a big deal, but when you strap it on the neck wants to go to the floor. I had other semi-hollow guitars that were better balanced than this one. I have to raise the guitar higher to help compensate for the dive. That's the only reason why I gave it 4 stars.

Let me start out this guitar is absolutely beautiful. The fit and finish is really 2nd to none. The playability is pure joy, that is if you like one of the thinnest necks in the world.you can play a guitar that cost much more money, then you would have to ask yourself, why?

        Best Semi-hollow for the price

        By Babak Mansouri

        from Kensington, MD

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

It is the nicest semi hollow you can get for the price. I love the tone and sustain. Comparing to my Les Paul studio the sustain is great and the tone so full and 335ish. I was thinking of getting a 335 or 339 but couldn't justify the price as I play for fun so I went for this based on reviews and I believe that I all I heard about this guitar is true. For Blues, Rock and Jazz I prefer this guitar. If you dont like the pickups you can swap it and get your own preferred sound out of it.

        Great Value

        By Don Boudreau

        from Sidney, ME

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

The Viking Deluxe is an excellent value for the money. It's a very versatile instrument that can you give a decent jazz sound, blues , rock etc. My style of playing is more clean and jazzy so I don't even own effects pedals at this point. But from what I've reviewed online these guitars can handle all genre's very well and produce some astonishing sounds with good effects. These are not true hollow body instruments. There is a center block that runs through the whole body but this probably contributes to getting a variety of tones without a lot of feedback as well. I own a vintage Gretsch 6118 that definitely produces a higher quality jazz tone being a true hollow body that no doubt has better pick ups. Likewise this guitar will not beat out a Gibson ES 335 in terms of tonal quality, but the price difference is enormous compared to quality difference. Pros: Beautiful instrument very sharp looking. Very versatile for a variety of styles. Fast, thin neck profile. Very good sustain. Great vintage vibe. Cons: At this price they didn't do anything heroic in setting this guitar up. You'll probably find the slightest little flaws that are easily overcome. It took a little bit to dial in the correct intonation. The nut on the input jack came off and the input fell inside the guitar and was a pain to fix. The neck needed a truss road adjustment as it was too straight and was creating a little fret buzz, easy fix. The frets protrude beyond the binding edge creating a very rough feel on the hands. This shouldn't be too big of a problem but may be an extra expense to get them dressed correctly. It looks like the upper bridge post wasn't driven down into the guitar all the way as the bridge pin plate wasn't landing flush on the wood and you can see the teeth on base of the bridge pin not driven in to the wood all the way. While the installed strings were D'addario who knows how long they've been on there. So tuning was difficult, I recommend new strings in your own flavor immediately, that did the trick for me. Overall I think I'll be very happy with this guitar for the money and would recommend it highly for those who don't have a huge budget. The one star off is for the minor setup irritations and very slight flaws. Guitar Center may do a setup for you for free at the store if you request it and make a fuss. Despite the long list of cons here. Most of it is basic setup issues. This is a great value.

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

Owned one in the late '60s and foolishly sold it. This reissue is a great value in affordable semi-hollow instruments - surprisingly good fit and finish, sweet cosmetics, fast action that Hagstrom is famous for. Crummy pickup selector switch, but easily fixed with a Switchcraft replacement. Runs rings around 335s costing almost three times as much.

          Excellent Guitar

          By Sean Donahue

          from Corvallis, OR

Comments about Hagstrom Viking Deluxe Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar:

I did a ton of research on this guitar before I bought it. This is my 8th guitar and it out shines the rest by far. The tuners are solidly constructed and keep the guitar well in tune. The tuneomatic bridge make it very easy to change strings while providing awesome resonance. The sustain is excellent due to some special trademark designs that you won't get anywhere else. Overall this is guitar is a great buy. My first impression after playing it is that this Hagstrom is comparable to guitars that cost $2,000 by Gibson or Ibanez. You can expect clear, smooth tones that are very desirable for Jazz, and if you throw some distortion in front you can expect powerful, crisp gains that works great for rock, alternative, blues, and much more. I mostly bought this guitar because it was very versatile with playing different styles and it does just that. As someone who loves distortion, I was pleasantly surprised by how much edge this guitar has for a semi hollow body. The only thing stopping this from getting a perfect score is I experienced some sharp frets on the neck that I had to file down. Once I did that and lowered the bridge saddle in order to lower the high action as well as put on a different set of strings to my taste, the guitar was incredible. This is one sexy looking axe that I highly recommend. Just stop thinking and buy it already! You will not regret your purchase!
