The H-II and H-III were introduced in 1965, so 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of these iconic guitars. Known for their quirky switches and easy playability, they quickly achieved wide popularity. Favorites among punk and grunge bands looking for a hard-rocking individualist statement, their audience is also quite diverse: from artists like Joe Satriani, whose first guitar was a Hagstrom H-III, to Aaron North (of Nine Inch Nails) who still has H-IIs and H-IIIs in his guitar arsenal. Many people have been asking for these classics to be re-issued, and we at Hagstrom are happy to comply with lovingly recreated and updated versions of these great classics.

A comfortably profiled Canadian Maple neck is bolted to a hand-selected American Alder body insuring that the original attack and “bite” of the H-II and H-III is maintained. The classic 6-in-line Hagstrom headstock design, used for the first production of H-IIs and H-IIIs, has been slightly updated, and the “Vintage Tremar” has been re-engineered for functional improvements without sacrificing its original appearance.

Hagstrom has taken great care in recreating the original pickups, and the new “Retro-S” pickups do an excellent job of matching the originals’ sonic glory. Gain-shaping functionality is enhanced by incorporating Hagstrom’s new RC-Circuit into the volume control, which allows for volume reduction without the loss of that high frequency “shimmer.” Case sold separately.

Quality Built Unique Guitar At A Price Half Its Value

from Salt Lake City

Comments about Hagstrom Retroscape Series H-III Electric Guitar:

First off let me say that this guitar is absolutely fantastic and I have no idea how they could make such a well made amazing sounding guitar for the price. Everything on this guitar is unique to Hagstrom and I've never seen anything like it.

1. The headstock has a Hagstom logo decal. This is a chrome plastic decal - it is not painted.

2. The nut is proprietary. The strings slide nicely with no issues of sticking or keeping pitch.

3. The truss rod is patented. Who patents truss rods?! It looks similar to an I-Beam and they say you will never get a straighter neck.

4. The neck: I am hard pressed to find any lines or seams where they glued it together. It is near immaculate.

5. The fretboard is a proprietary composite material that feels like ebony. I know it's not ebony, but my fingers can't seem to tell the difference. The frets themselves are well pressed and are perfectly formed with no sharp edges, bumps, or rough spots.

6. The Strat style SG body doesn't have the typical SG neck dipping issues and the finish is impeccable.

7. Switches:
A) Top Left Switch is a Master Volume kill switch
B) Right Side: Top 3 are pickups 4 = Master Tone On: instant muddy blues sound / tone full off. 5 = Mute: Mini/Tiny Gate that's great for chunky riffs! 6 = Bass Cut: helps leads cut into the mix
C) Bottom knob: Main Volume Knob.

8. Bridge is a roller bridge!

9. The trem system is proprietary and I have no idea how it works without springs, but it is nice and stiff and works very well when needed.

10. Proprietary Pickups: the closest I can compare the sound to would be Seymour Duncan Hot Rails on a Strat. It may look like a single coil design, but these pickups have their own unique character - noiseless as well.

They only downside is there is no option to modify your tone on the guitar. You get full on or full off. I rather like the simplicity and eq it another way, but others may not. Other than that I am elated with this guitar!

It's a good guitar, only a few issues. Good for punk/garage.

Best Uses

Comments about Hagstrom Retroscape Series H-III Electric Guitar:

I use this guitar for surf rock, blues, and garage rock. It has a great tone, which is customizable with the switches. However, the Tremar seems to be a bit stiff - not quite as smooth as a Bigsby. It has a fast, playable neck. I had an issue with the action though, sometimes it changes if I strum with a lot of force.
